SDSU Women Get 20th Victory

BROOKINGS, SD - South Dakota State reached 20 victories for the fourth straight season by defeating Upper Iowa 97-55 in women’s basketball Friday night at Frost Arena.
The Jacks got off to an 11-2 start, led 44-20 at halftime, and opened the second half with an 8-1 run for a 52-23 margin. It was 70-33 with just under 11 minutes to play.
Five players, including four starters, scored in double figures for SDSU led by Megan Vogel with 16. Sarita DeBoer added 14, Shannon Schlagel had 13 points and eight rebounds, Steph Bolden scored 10 and reserve Andrea Verdegan had 11, hitting three of four three-point shots.
SDSU’s fifth starter, point guard Heather Sieler, just missed double figures with eight points, but also had seven assists and no turnovers in 25 minutes.
SDSU shot 49.3 per cent, 35x71, while UIU shot 46.3 per cent, 19x41. The Jacks had a 39-26 rebounding advantage and were plus 15 in turnovers (24 bu UIU to 9).
SDSU is now 20-6 overall - the tenth time the Jacks have won 20 or more games in a season. SDSU’s next outing will be at North Dakota State next Saturday, Feb. 26.
