Vanterpool gives verbal commitment to Wesleyan
    Wednesday, April 06, 2005

By KORRIE WENZEL, The Daily Republic

Isha Vanterpool, a 5-foot-9 reserve guard for NCAA Division I South Dakota State University, has given a verbal commitment to transfer and play next season at Dakota Wesleyan, DWU women’s basketball coach Anne Konechne said Tuesday.

Vanterpool, from Huron, twice was named to the Class AA all-state team during her career at Huron High School.

“It’s a very big transfer for us. She’s so versatile and talented and we’re lucky to have her on our squad next year,” Konechne said. “She’ll add quickness and scoring ability and an outside threat.”

Vanterpool is expected to sign a letter of intent Thursday, Konechne said.

Vanterpool averaged 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and four steals per game her senior year at Huron High School and then played in 12 games last season for South Dakota State. At SDSU, she shot 50 percent from the floor and averaged four points a game.

Konechne said Vanterpool will be able to play right away when the team begins its schedule in November.

Ann Konechne is the sister of former wrestler Paul Konechne and current wrestler Martin Konechne.

She'll get all the shots and playing time she's always wanted there.

I don't understand this transfer. Going from playing on one the best teams in the midwest to playing for DWU? I hope she enjoyed a free year's tuition at SDSU. Done with rant, I wish her the best of luck and hope she finds whatever she's looking for at DWU.

This transfer puzzles me as well. The couple of games I saw her play, I thought she could have been a contributor in the future. The amount of playing time is always an issue and I wish her the best at DWU. Atleast she was wise enough to choose DWU over another school like some others have in the past. ;D ;D ;D

        Re: Isha Vanterpool to Transfer

Almost every year there are freshmen that either quit the team mid-year or don't come back for a second year.

Not everyone is suited to the "BIG TIME." Some would rather be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish in a big pond.

You can't fault them for doing what they think is best for themselves.

You can only rise to the level of your ability if you are determined to put forth the effort and fit in to the program.

It takes a huge comittment to play at SDSU.

I too wish Isha the best at DWU. She would have been a leader at SDSU, but for whatever her personal reasons, she will now be a leader at DWU.

To be a leader you have to have followers! Fortunately, no one else has followed Isha's lead.

People follow those that earn everyone's respect.  You do that  by setting an example of hard work, caring more about others than yourself and exhibiting the ability to get it done.

Isha would have been a contributor for SDSU but hardly a leader IMO.  I think Verdegan seems to have earned that position for the freshman class.

Many will question this move but few will criticize. I'll do both. She is giving up an opportunity to get a subsidized education at the finest institution for higher learning in the state and sacrificing an opportunity to be part of the history associated with the move to DI. What does she expect to accomplish at DWU? I think she making a huge mistake but thats part of growing up.

I realize it is a drop from D1 to NAIA. But we must remember DWU was in the final four for a couple years in a row a couple years back. I realize they had a very special class of athletes then. DWU is rebuilding and could be back. They play in arguably the toughest NAIA conference in the country. Although if I were in her position I would stay at SDSU. But i'm not and either is anyone else. I wish her luck.

Am I the only one who feels this thread should stop?  I personally have a hard time seeing the criticism over a decision a student-athlete makes to transfer, especially when no one here knows the true reasons.  This young woman thought SDSU was the place for her, then once here decided she was not in the right situation.  She's making a decision that helps her and SDSU both.  It's great to know she's landing somewhere else in state, but is it a crime that she chooses to not attend SDSU any further.  Apparently to some it is.  I guess we should start a thread lambasting Joe Krabbenhoft for choosing a school other than SDSU as well.

I chose to leave a job at SDSU for personal reasons before this board started.  Here's your chance to tell me I was wrong too.

I don't have a problem with her leaving, but I do have a problem with the way she left (the middle of the season).   She signed a letter of intent to go to school at SDSU and play basketball here.  For her services of playing basketball, she had the opportunity to receive a FREE education.  So that means for her services of playing basketball for 1/2 year, she received 1 year of FREE education and took away the opportunity for someone else to receive a FREE education and play basketball at SDSU.  I feel the same way about Jake Wenig, although I don't think he stuck around for the spring semester.

I see your point on the free education thing. But does anyone know that she was still on scholarship for the spring semester. My experience was that if a player voluntarily left the team they forfieted their scholarship. In this case, she left the team at semester break, therefore I would assume she was paying her own way spring semester. I could be wrong though.

                        Catch'em,

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. You can disagree. There seems to be further issues for you. Why is debate in a public forum so offensive to you? (rhetorical question) SDSU provided her a scholarship. She should honor that "contract". Expectations were in place. She made a difficult decision and must have been expecting some consequence. I wish her well in her future at DWU and beyond. College is only the beginning and she may have already shown a weakness in her personality. Again, just thoughts from an SDSU fan who is a little hurt and frustrated by her decision making process. Chastize if you must but realize your motivation to do so. I have stated mine.

                          This is fun.

It would seem to me that a debate would require two sides, so unless Isha is on here defending herself this really isn't a "debate in a public forum".

My issue is merely the fact that a number of people have criticized her decision without knowing the facts. I agree that everyone is entitled to their opinion, as I've stated many of my own. What strikes me as ironic is that I have fallen into the trap of so many on this board, that being striking out against criticism. Our "friends" from UNO and USD come on here and criticize all aspects of our program and then get scorn from the members of the board. Now, members of the board are have criticized a decision by an 18 year old girl, and I have turned into the deliverer of scorn.

Your "contract" statement is a double edged sword. The contract works two ways, Isha agreed to provide basketball services, in return SDSU agreed to provide her a desired education and also a desireable baskeball experience. jackmd, you say she should honor that "contract", but do you know that perhaps she felt SDSU wasn't honoring it's end of the "contract". If she felt that way then shouldn't she be entitled to break the contract. Or, lets say hypothetically she wasn't able to fulfill the contract to the level that was expected. Would you then fault her, or SDSU, for breaking the contract?

I guess I'll point fault at myself. I just scrolled back through the posts in this thread and most people wished her luck at DWU, while only a few added criticism for her choice. I was wrong. It was wrong of me to criticize anyone's posts. Please forgive me.

                            Re: Isha Vanterpool to Transfer

I guess the debate I see is one between those who are here, understanding that this should have no effect on Isha or her decision making.  I do not know her side of the story and if it is compelling I would be understanding.  This issue does not bother me outside of this forum.  When I'm here in the persona of jackmd my views are from that of an SDSU fan and narrow in their perspective.  In this case I feel jaded by the decision a great player has made.  Why would she want to leave what I consider a great program and great institution?  Only she can answer that question and she certainly is not obligated to do so in a public forum.

                            I agree, this is fun.

The only difference of "OPINION" on this thread centered around:

                              1. Whether Isha was a "LEADER AT SDSU". One person apparently thought she was. I did not think there was any evidence to support the claim. Show me some and I'll change my mind.

                              2. Another claimed she is a "GREAT" player. Again I looked for evidence to support the claim and found none that convinced me. She is definitely a good player, but GREAT?

Other than those two differences of opinion we are all pretty much in agreement.

                              1. She is a very nice, pretty, smart, personable girl.
                              2. She is a good athlete.
                              3. She could have contributed to SDSU's success, but chose not too.
                              4. Everyone wishes her well, and much success.

SDSU has announced that they have committments from 5 incoming freshmen . I have heard some say that there may be 2 more announced next week at the spring signing day. Some of them may be GREAT. Some of them may be LEADERS. Some may be both. It won't take very long for the coaches or the players to sort it out.

Most of them will stay all four years. Some will not. And so it goes year after year after year.
