A young talented team that lost a lot of experience in the post.

I have not seen any of the incoming Freshmen play, but Johnston has and he seems to be able to spot talent. He is recruiting a lot in Wisconsin lately. Hopefully the incoming Freshmen class will have the talent to step in and make an impact right away.

      Starting Five:

      1. Sieler
      2. Vogel
      3. ?
      4. ?
      5. ?

There will be a battle for the remaining three spots. I think the team could go 10 deep this year.

Did Grimsrud readshirt? Did not see her name in the box scores after early part of season.

Will see how Carda pans out. Pretty slow feet for DI.

That would be my starting five as well right now. As I said I have not seen any of the incoming freshmen play yet, but from the reports I hear from those that have there are a couple of real deal players in the group.

Grimsrud did not redshirt. It may have been in her best "basketball" interests to do so but she's incredibly intelligent and I believe her sights are set on moving on after 4 years. Hopefully, she get a little stronger and faster over the summer.

The women do need an athletic 6'4 center to matchup with a lot of the better DI teams. I know a lot of the mid-major DI programs struggle to get these kind of rare players. University of Minnesota struggled with teams like Baylor, LSU and Michigan State because they could not matchup with these kind of players.

I was really surprised a player with Grimsrud's credentials had such little strength, mobility and jumping ability. She definitley would have benifited from a redshirt year.

I thought Janel McCarville matched up pretty well with ANY center in the nation. She's a finalist for the Wooden Award. I think predictions are she'll be the #1 overall pick in the WNBA draft.

If someone is interested in winning the Big-12 title the next 4 years they better recruit athletic 6'-4" post players because Oklahoma recuited the Paris twins from Northern Cal and they are very good. Assuming they don't redshirt, if Oklahoma is on TV next year take a few minutes to watch and you will see the future of girls basketball. I was able to watch one game in person this fall and they are head and shoulders above anyone I've ever seen at that level.

The local sportscast announcer stated that if Courtney Paris declared for the WNBA today, that she would be the first overall pick. Courtney is 6'-4" and Ashley is 6'-3" and they are the daughters of former 49'er offensive lineman Bubba Paris.

Going with the twins theme, I see Sarita's twin sisters signed with Jamestown to play basketball and run track.

It's funny you mentioned McCarville because she was the one I was referring too. She is brutally strong and defies logic at how agile she is, however at 6'2 she really struggled against the athletic 6'4 centers with Baylor, LSU etc. She dominated people who were undersized or were built like her but seemed lost against the type of player I'm describing. I think she will be a top 3 pick in the WNBA and I admire her game a lot.

I think being a 6'2'' center in womens basketball and then having to play against a taller and maybe more athletic center would have to be an adjustment. She's probably hasn't had to adjust her game like that too many times. On the other hand, she did draw a lot of attention and that did open things up for her teamates. Would we be talking about this if her line was 6 pts, 4 rebs, 0 blocks and won? Probably not.

But...she hasn't really performed all that badly when faced with these types of centers....

                            vs. Mich St. 1-17 2pts 12 rebs
                            vs. Mich St. 7-13 17pts 5 rebs
vs. Mich St. 6-18 14 pts 15 rebs
                            vs. LSU 14-26 31 pts 13 rebs
                            vs. Baylor 6-16 16 pts 11 rebs

Works out to an average of 16 pts and 11 boards, FG % = 38

All games were losses for the Lady Gophers though....Okay, that's a 1/2 hour I'll never get back...

                              I think if you're center is shooting 38% you're going to have problems . . .
