NIU Men's Basketball Player Paige Paulsen Granted Release From Program

DeKalb, IL - Northern Illinois University men's basketball coach Rob Judson announced Thursday (March 17) that sophomore forward Paige Paulsen (Custer, SD / Custer) has been granted a release from his scholarship obligations to the program.

A 6-foot-7 forward, Paulsen averaged 7.5 points and 3.7 rebounds in 21 games for the Huskies, but missed the final seven contests due to lingering effects from a concussion suffered at Kent State University on Feb. 6, 2005. Paulsen also made seven starts with six of those coming in the first seven games of the season.

"Paige has requested and has received a release from our basketball program," Judson said. "We thank him for his effort and the positive contribution to our program. We wish him the best.

"Players may transfer for a variety of reasons, whether it be personal, social, academic or overall fit with the school and program," Judson said. "Generally, players want a bigger role and more playing time at another school. We benefited from a transfer with Ben Rand coming home to NIU. Today in college basketball it is not unusual for players to move on.".....

I wonder where he'll end up? I wouldn't mind having him in a Jackrabbit uniform.

He would have to sit out one year because it would be a D1 to D1 transfer. I know nothing about him, although he must be pretty good to be on scholarship at NIU.

If he was released from his committment to UNI he can transfer to another university without the one year wait?

I think he would still have to sit out the one year if it is D1 to D1?

Does anyone know if he is thinking about coming to SDSU? If he goes D-I I will be really disappointed if he doesn't come to State. SD didn't have a D-I college when Paige graduated from high school, but now that we do maybe he'll come back and play for SDSU. There aren't a lot of SD players that go D-I, so I really don't want to see our state lose the ones that do.

What I've been hearing is that you'll be able to watch him play next year at USD. That way he won't lose a year of eligibility.

Have you heard that from a reliable source?

Is State looking at that Tweidt kid from Pierre, I hear he is tough and is getting D-I looks. He's only a junior this year. This was probably talked about in the recruiting section, I don't know.

Let's put it this way. The source thinks he's very reliable, although I have my doubts. However, this rumor has been circulated by more than one person and on several occasions. However, it is still just a rumor.

I haven't heard anything about the Tviet kid besides that he's a good player that supposedly Creighton was looking at.

just heard that the original rumor I heard about Paulson is BS. So, back to square one.

                      Another consideration- Did he redshirt?

If he did, there's a continuous five year ticker for DI eligiblity, so he would only have three seasons of competition (plus a redshirt year and a "residence" year at SDSU or another DI school).

He did not red shirt. He graduated in 2003.

                          Has Paulsen ranked

                          527 of forwards

The 6'7 210 lb forward scored double figures in 7 games this last year.

I would bet he is coming back to South Dakota to play somewhere. A nice addition for some lucky school.
