SDSU ranks second in D-I GPA

The South Dakota State University women's basketball team made a smooth transition to the realm of Division I during the 2004-05 school year.

Not only did the Jackrabbits compile a winning record against D-I opposition with an 8-7 record en route to a 21-7 season, but SDSU posted the second-highest team grade-point average in Division I to earn a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association’s Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll.

The Jackrabbits' 3.567 team GPA trailed only the 3.602 GPA turned in by Indiana State. Eastern Washington, 3.498; North Dakota State, 3.476, and Iowa State, 3.461 rounded out the top five.

When factoring all three divisions of the NCAA plus NAIA, SDSU ranked in a tie for ninth place among four-year institutions with Dickinson State (N.D.). Division II member Drury (Mo.) took the overall title with a 3.802 team GPA.

SDSU, coached by Aaron Johnston, ranked 13th at the NCAA Division II level with a 3.407 team GPA during the 2003-04 season. The Jackrabbits also received the award during the 1999-2000 season.

The women's basketball team is the third SDSU squad to earn a team academic award this summer, joining the Jackrabbit volleyball and women's swimming and diving teams.

Two South Dakota collegiate teams rank high nationally in GPA

    From Staff Reports
    Published: 08/17/05

South Dakota has a pair of pretty smart women's basketball teams.

For the 2004-05 season, South Dakota State ranked No. 9 in the nation with a 3.567 GPA among NAIA and NCAA institutions of all divisions by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.

Augustana ranked 12th on the same list with a 3.557 GPA.

SDSU women's basketball coach Aaron Johnston said the rankings show the quality of women in the programs.

"The players are the ones who have to go through it all," Johnston said. "We try to take that into account during the recruiting process, but they're the ones who have to go to the classes and get it done."

SDSU ranked No. 2 for Division I institutions, behind only Indiana State (3.602). Augustana was third in Division II with Drury University (Mo.) tops at 3.802. Drury University was the overall leader as well.

North Dakota State was fourth in Division I at 3.476.

The SDSU women were probably #1 in the nation in miles traveled and school days missed. That makes their accomplishment even more significant!

Congrats to both SDSU and NDSU for winning on and off the court!
