Jacks win handily in exhibition finale


Five South Dakota State players scored in double figures and the Jackrabbit women's basketball team used a stifling defense to force 30 turnover in closing out the exhibition portion of its schedule with an 84-30 victory over Upper Iowa at Frost Arena.

The Jackrabbits never trailed, scoring the first six points of the game, eventually building a double-digit lead for good at 12-2 at the 15:15 mark on a pair of Megan Vogel free throws. The lead grew to 40-16 at halftime, with the Peacocks getting no closer than 22 points after scoring the first basket of the second half.

Sarah Meckley came off the bench to lead the Jackrabbits with 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Christina Gilbert, who missed the first exhibition game due to injury, scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a starting role.

Courtney Grimsrud added 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench, while starters Jennifer Warkenthien and Heather Sieler each scored 10.

Upper Iowa was led by Christa Hammel's 12 points.

The Jackrabbits held a 59-35 rebounding advantage as Vogel led all players with 11, including seven on the offensive end.

From the field, SDSU shot 45.3 percent, making 34-of-75 field goal attempts, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. At the line, the Jackrabbits converted 10-of-18 tries, 55.6 percent.

Upper Iowa was held to 17.9 percent shooting, 10-of-56, from the floor. The Peacocks made just 3-of-16 three-point attempts, 18.8 percent. On free throws, UIU made 7-of-13 attempts, 53.8 percent.

The Jackrabbits open the regular season Nov. 19 with a noon matinee at Nebraska. Upper Iowa opens its season Tuesday by hosting Mount Mercy (Iowa).
