Just another reason its great to be a Jackrabbit. I hope we continue to keep a strong focus on academics with our athletics. Its really a credit to the student athletes, their parents, coaches, and teachers.

Great news! I didn't see the TV news tonight at 6 or 10...it should have been a top story.

Go Jackrabbits and congrats to AJ and his team.

        SDSU tops in classroom again
Women's basketball team has best GPA in nation for second year

It seems the South Dakota State women's basketball team didn't miss much in the classroom during its WNIT run.

For the second season in a row, the Jackrabbits had the highest grade-point average of any team in the country, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Monday.

SDSU's collective mark of 3.693 in 2006-07 - although down .037 from the previous season - was the best in a field of well more than 1,500 schools in NCAA Division I, II and III, the NAIA and junior colleges. Division III Hardin-Simmons (3.664) was second overall and Northern Iowa (3.624) was the runner-up in Division I.

"This is another great accomplishment for our team," said Jacks head coach Aaron Johnston, whose club featured just one senior and seven Independent all-academic selections. "Our players have always taken the award seriously, and it is great to see they have been honored two years in a row."

Since the WBCA began recognizing teams in 1997-98, no Division I school other than SDSU has had the best overall GPA once, let alone in consecutive years.

What's more, the Jacks went 25-6 and became the first reclassifying school to play in the WNIT, losing to eventual champ Wyoming in the quarterfinals, and ranked 43rd in average home attendance at 2,753. DePaul was the only other Division I program to reach the postseason, rank in the top 50 in attendance and the top 25 in GPA.  .  .  .  (read more)

The Summit League has given this news a prominent spot on its website.  It's great to see this type of welcome to The League.  (Am I allowed to refer to the Summit League as "The League"?) See it at:

It's also great to see league foe Oakland University on the list.  You can also read about their academic success on the Oakland website:

Actually, the correct "short" term is "The Summit"
