LINCOLN - The Nebraska women's basketball team spent Saturday afternoon in a cement mixer, and the bruising encounter with South Dakota State left everything topsy-turvy. Consider these head-shakers:
• The 68-49 derailment was NU's first season-opening loss in 25 years.
• All-Big 12 performer Kiera Hardy, the conference's leading returning scorer who averaged 19 points a game last year, scored just two baskets - both 3-pointers - and was 2 for 20 from the field. Her first bucket came with 4:10 remaining in the first half. By then, the Jackrabbits owned a 27-14 lead.
• SDSU forged a 52-32 rebound advantage.
• Nebraska trailed at halftime 37-18 and made just 6 of 28 shots before intermission.
• The Jackrabbits shot 52 percent from 3-point range and made 13, one shy of the Devaney Center record by an NU opponent.
Most of SDSU's 3-point tries were uncontested. NU coach Connie Yori said many of those wide-open shots were the result of excellent passes by the Jackrabbits.
"They're a good shooting team," Yori said. "But more importantly, they're a good passing team. Passing is the most underrated skill in the game. I say that all the time. We need to become a better passing team. Good passers make shooters look good."
A bright spot for NU was the play of freshman Kelsey Griffin, who scored 18 points - the third-best career-opening performance by a Husker.
But Griffin was NU's only inside player to make much of an offensive impact. Jessica Gerhart added eight points, but didn't launch a shot in the first half. Chelsea Aubry didn't take a shot the entire game.
"We didn't run through our offense to the point where we enabled the right people to get the right shots," Yori said. "We got hurried. We were impatient on offense the first half."
South Dakota State, meanwhile, appeared to be far above its status as a second-year Division I team.
Because of the men's tournament this weekend, the women practiced this morning at 6 o'clock to prepare for the invasion by Creighton on Monday night.
NU needs a more solid performance from Hardy against the Bluejays.
"That played a huge part in the game," Yori said.
