UCI TRAVELS TO ROCKY MOUNTAIN INVITATIONAL:
After hosting Loyola Marymount Monday night, UCI will travel to the Rocky Mountain Invitational hosted by Colorado State Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 26-27).

The Anteaters will battle the host Rams on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. PST then take on South Dakota State on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Colorado State and South Dakota State meet on Friday to begin the tournament.

Saturday’s game marks the first of four consecutive games on the road for the Anteaters. UCI will spend eight of the next 10 contests away from the Bren Events Center.

Irvine, Calif. -- The Loyola Marymount women’s basketball team had five players in double-figure points to lead the Lions to a 93-73 victory at the Bren Events Center Monday.

UCI’s Melissa Jacob hit a three-pointer to narrow the Loyola Marymount lead to one (27-26) with 7:05 remaining in the first half before the Lions responded with a 17-5 run to open up a 13-point advantage (44-31) at 4:17.

Loyola Marymount went into the intermission with a 54-38 lead and let UCI only get within 10 (62-52) the rest of the game.

Loyola Marymount was led by Amanda Patton with 18 points, hitting 5-7 from three-point range. Patton, who recorded all 18 points in the first half, also had a team-high four assists. Jevay Grooms totaled 15 points, while Rachael Ziemann had 13 points and Valerie Ogoke recorded 12 points. Ashlee Dunlap totaled 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds.

The Lions shot .517 (30-58) from the field and .700 (7-10) from three-point range. The Anteaters shot .375 (24-64) from the floor and .368 (7-19) from long range. The teams each had 40 rebounds, but UCI had 27 turnovers to the Lions’ 19. The two teams combined for 54 fouls.

UCI was led by Stephanie Duda with 13 points and seven rebounds. Annie Mai had 12 points followed by Miranda Forry with 11 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Freshman Kirian Ishizaki totaled a career-best five assists.

LMU improves to 1-1, while UCI falls to 0-2.

FRESNO STATE STARTERS SCORE BIG IN 93-84 VICTORY OVER UC IRVINE

Irvine, Calif. -- Four of Fresno State’s starters scored in double figures to lead the Bulldogs to a 93-84 victory over UC Irvine Friday at the Bren Events Center. It was the season opener for both squads.

Amy Parrish led all players with 20 points, shooting 8-12 from the floor. She was followed by Paige Diggs who was 12-13 from the charity stripe and ended with 18 points. Chantella Perera totaled 17 points while Toni Atherley had 11 points in the win.

The Bulldogs led from start to finish with UCI getting only as close as six (57-51) with 12:10 remaining in the second half.

Junior Angie Ned led the Anteaters with 17 points on 7-13 shooting from the field. Freshman Kelly Cochran added 14 points and a team-high five rebounds. Melissa Jacob added 13 points and six assists.

UCI was 18-36 from the free throw line, while Fresno State was 35-42. Fresno State’s 35 free throws was a Bren Center record bettering the old mark of 30 set by UCI against San Jose State on Jan. 14, 1993.

SDSU defeats UC Irvine to win tourney
FORT COLLINS, Colo. -- Tournament Most Valuable Player Megan Vogel scored a game-high 18 points as the South Dakota State University women’s basketball team defeated UC Irvine 81-56 Sunday afternoon to claim the title of the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational.

The Jackrabbits improved to 3-1 by winning both games at the three-day tournament played at Moby Arena. Host Colorado State finished with a 1-1 record, while UC Irvine lost both of its games to fall to 0-4 on the year.

Vogel led a second-half surge, scoring 16 of her 18 points in the final 20 minutes. Leading 33-27 at halftime, the Jackrabbits opened the second half with a 15-6 run to go up 48-33.

The Anteaters got back to within nine, 53-44, on a Lauren Yadon basket with 9:40 remaining. SDSU would lead by double digits for good as Ashlea Muckenhirn made a three-pointer a minute later. An all-tournament selection, Muckenhirn came off the bench to score 14 points as Jackrabbit reserves ouscored UC Irvine’s starters, 38-31. Muckenhirn, a freshman from Osceola, Wis., has reached double figures in all four Jackrabbit games this season.

Another freshman, Jennifer Warkenthien, scored a season-high 11 points.

Kelly Cochran came off the bench to lead UC Irvine with 14 points.

SDSU dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Anteaters, 54-31. Senior center Christina Gilbert pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds.

Andrea Verdegan, who took over the point guard duties after Heather Sieler left the game in the first half with an ankle injury, dished out a game-high six assists.

From the field, the Jackrabbits shot 39.7 percent (27-of-68 ). SDSU shot better from the perimeter, making 9-of-19 three-point attempts, 47.4 percent, including 6-of-8 in the second half. Vogel was 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the second half. At the line, the Jackrabbits attempted 29 free throws, making 18, for 62.1 percent.

UCI attempted only 13 free throws and converted 10 for 76.9 percent. The Anteaters were 21-of-57 from the field, 36.8 percent, including 4-of-15 from the three-point range, 26.7 percent.

SDSU opens the home season on Friday, Dec. 2 by hosting NCAA Tournament qualifier Middle Tennesse State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena. The Jackrabbits also will host Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Dec. 4.

Any word on how serious Heather Sieler's injury is? She left early on and did not return. I believe it was an ankle injury??
