Just remember that Megan Mahoney was cut when she got drafted and now she plays for the Connectitut Suns. So there is still hope.

Actually her (Mahoney) rights were drafted in 2005 and took the season off with a torn achilles tendon. They retained her rights in 2006 when she was healthy..but on the brighter side of things Megan Vogel can still play pro ball and actually make more money doing that or as an asst. coach (college) than she would with a rookie salary in the WNBA.

Crystal Robinson of the Mystics just retired. 'Bout time for them to give Megan a shot. 0-4 team that appears to need some youth in their lineup.

Hoops Camp invites WNBA draft pick to speak

The 120 kids attending Blazer basketball camp this week got a chance to see what happens when hard work and determination are practiced on the court.

During a special “halftime” presentation camp director Mike Durbin invited 2007 WNBA draft pick and South Dakota State University basketball stand-out Megan Vogel to speak at camp.

Vogel, a 2007 graduate of SDSU and a native of St. Peter, Minn., was a four-year starter for the Jackrabbits and helped them to the 2007 WNIT quarterfinals. After college, Vogel was drafted by the Washington Mystics with the 19th overall pick in the 2007 WNBA draft.

Vogel addressed the audience full of campers who dream to continue their basketball careers to the high school, college and even pro levels. . . . (read more)

I read in the print version of the Aberdeen American News that Megan Vogel was nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year. I can't find it online though. The selection will be made in October.

It will be great to have Megan's experience and enthusiasm on the Jacks' bench this year as a grad assistant. She's been a wonderful ambassador for SDSU, and she would make a great addition to the full-time coaching staff when her playing days are over.

Not to mention having her as a player/coach to practice against will be invaluable for the team.

I see Pro's and Con's for Megan continuing with the team. The Pro's are obvious, she is a great player and has allot of valuable experience. The Con's is, it may work counter productive to have a past teammate, now being their coach. Only the players will know for sure how they feel about it, as the season progresses. It is not unlike a work situation, where a peer becomes a "boss". For some it may go well, for others it may not.

Megan will do a solid job. She knows the game, and will work hard, no doubt about that. Her old teammates respect her so much, they will listen to her advice.

Vogel was one of 120 conference and independent nominees from all three divisions of the NCAA to initially be considered for the award, which is based on athletic accomplishments, academic achievement, service and leadership. . . I don't think it will be a problem. She's well respected enough that the players will look to her for guidance. It's really up to Megan to make that distinction when dealing with them on and off the court, and for AJ and the staff to treat her as their peer rather than a former player.

I did it for two years after my eligibility was up and had no issues whatsoever. She'll be fine.
