    New from training camp

    Megan Vogel
“No, I wasn’t nervous. I don’t really get nervous to play basketball. I guess I feel that you have to prepare as much as possible and then it’s in Gods plans. The players are great. Laurie (Koehn) is great, I have to guard her all the way out to her car. There are just some really great players and they aren’t even all here yet. They have a really talented team and it’s just a lot of fun.”

    Head Coach Richie Adubato on
    Megan Vogel
“She’s a complete basketball player. She can shoot the three, she can go to the basket, she can pass, and she’s very strong. She can play the two or the three, she’s a left hander. She reminds me a little bit of Vicki Johnson who I had in New York. She’s the same way, just a very solid basketball player.”

The Mystics play Chicago on May 4th for pre-season..which is next Friday if I'm not mistaken? Alana Beard will likely be out with a shoulder injury. Pre-season games are usually for the roster hopefuls to play in real game situations and wins/losses don't count.....anyone going to go? The game is in Milwaukee at the Al McGuire Center at 7PM..tix are $10-15..according to MapQuest.com, Milwaukee is approximately 8 hrs. and 18 minutes from Brookings..but times will vary due to different routes. If there are any Becky Hammon fans, San Antonio will play their exhibition game in Omaha, Neb. at the Qwest Center May 13th (Sunday) against Detroit

SDSU's Megan Vogel taking aim at WNBA

            Published: May 1, 2007
            By Terry Vandrovec tvandrovec@argusleader.com

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The directions are there in the center console, just in case. But Megan Vogel doesn't really need them.

MapQuest claims two turns and two miles separate Trinity College, where the WNBA's Washington Mystics are holding training camp, from the bowels of the Verizon Wireless Center, where the forward wing will tuck her team-loaned compact SUV between a Porsche, a Mercedes and a Cadillac Escalade.

Then again, all she really has to do is follow the Capitol, an unavoidable landmark on the horizon; it will guide her to the caged underground lot.

Vogel doesn't meander through traffic like a small-town kid thrust from South Dakota State into the working world less than one week ago. She talks about the first three days of her professional basketball career, exchanges Why-I-Oughtas with drivers that she is certain she'll never see again and sings along with the country music playing on the radio.

She reaches her destination as planned, upping her career mark to 2-1 and sets her sites on food by foot. En route to her favorite burrito place, fine dining as far as she is concerned, the 21-year-old, sticking to the side of the street suggested by Mystics general manager Linda Hargrove, walks past people with no legs, no teeth, no place to live and probably no hope.

"Can you imagine being homeless?" she asks incredulously.

Clearly, she can't. The concept that any person - let alone tens of thousands - might not have the means or the support to get back on their feet before being forced to live on the street, does not exist in her small corner of the world.

Vogel grew up in St. Peter, a southern Minnesota town of roughly 9,747 people and attended college in Brookings, population 18,504 yet just 23 days after playing her final game at SDSU, she was whisked off to Washington, D.C., the nation's capital, with a metro population of more than 8 million. . . . Vogel awarded Postgraduate Scholarship

Former South Dakota State University women’s basketball player Megan Vogel has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

A native of St. Peter, Minn., Vogel started all 120 of the team’s games over her four-year career and finished second on the Jackrabbit scoring charts with 1,850 points. She also finished third in career three-pointers with 194 and fifth in career rebounds with 783.

During the 2006-07 season, Vogel led the Jackrabbits in scoring at 17.5 points per game in leading SDSU to the quarterfinals of the Women’s NIT. She shot 49.8 percent from the field and 39.5 percent (62-of-157) from three-point range. Vogel's 154 free throws made this past season set a Jackrabbit single-season record, and her 492 career free throws and 633 free throw attempts also are school records.

Vogel, who will receive her degree in health, physical education and recreation on Saturday, was selected in the second round -- 19th overall -- in last month’s WNBA draft by the Washington Mystics. She is the first Jackrabbit and the first player to play collegiately for a South Dakota college to be taken in the WNBA Draft. . . . (read more)

Not really anything new...but certainly more evidence Megan is a good little ball player!  Explains when the Mystics fell in love with Vogel...

Mystics' Vogel Has Made the Most of Her Chances

                http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...050302080.html

"...Washington assistant coach Marynell Meadors trekked to the Bahamas for an early-season tournament to watch Baylor's Bernice Mosby, whom the Mystics eventually drafted in the first round. But while at the tournament, Meadors came across Vogel, who scored 24 points in a game against Mosby's team.

Meadors immediately put Vogel on the team's draft radar

yet another 'amusing' (kind of) moment from the Megan Vogel WNBA blog
                posted 5-4-07

...So I ACCIDENTALLY gave one of my teammates a concussion two days ago. I felt horrible. Especially since a few days before we were both diving for a loose ball and she cut open her chin so deeply, she had to get a plastic surgeon to stitch her up. Linda (Hargrove, our general manager) saw me walking down on the court the other day and made a wide circle. "I am going to steer clear of you," she said. "I don't want a black eye, concussion or cut-open chin." It was all in good fun, though. She said she was just kidding. ...

They have not made final cuts yet. Her status is that of a college graduate as I watched her walk acroos the Froat Arena stage on television. A number of other SDSU athletes recieved their degrees today as well. Chris Stoebner and Deryl Cunningham recived Master Degrees.

Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. I for one am not in any hurry to stop celebrating one of the most positive role models and best players ever to play basketball at SDSU!
