Does anybody have any info on the chances of her makin the final roster? Besides the last week, I've never paid much attention to the WNBA. It looks like the mystics have 5 or 6 players already that are around Megan's size. I was kind of hoping she'd go to a team like the chicago sky so she'd have a better shot making the team. What ever happens, best of luck to her.

WOW, Congratulations to Megan. This is fantastic. I'm actually a little shocked, to be honest with you. I really thought she had a 50 - 50 chance at being drafted in the 3rd round. She must have really impressed people at the Pre-draft workout. There are still a lot of players that everyone thought would go in the 1st round that still have not been drafted.

        Way to Megan!!! [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif] [smiley=2vrolijk_08.gif]

Reasonable concerns that I am sure will have little affect on Megan. She understands her game better than most and will try to impress the team with her strengths. Not only those on the court but her strength off the court, if you know what I mean. Being the most physically gifted on talented doesn't make someone the best player for a team. I think Megan knows this is a great opportunity and she will approach it as a privelage for her.

Unbelieveable!!!! The 19th pick is fantastic! Way to go Megan. She went in the draft way ahead of Chrissy Givens of Middle Tennessee, who is also a good player. This all says something for her personality as well as her game...she is a winner!  The announcers have been saying the first 18-19 picks have a pretty good chance of making the rosters. But I know one thing, if Megan doesn't make the roster on the first try, she isn't going to go away without a real battle!

: Congratulations Megan! And congratulatoins to her coaches and teammates, whom without their great support and winning ways, she would not have got the attention and recognition she has received.

Congrats to Vogel and SDSU on getting drafted! Washington addressed a need for a good shooter with heighth in picking Vogel. I'm sure she looked very well in pre-draft camps as well which helped her cause. Chrissy wasn't solid at one position. Chrissy's 5'11" heighth hurt her chances of getting drafted higher. Chrissy's quick and a good defensive player, but the theme of this year's draft has been getting taller and getting offensive--that's Megan Vogel, but not Chrissy Givens. I don't think the fact that Chrissy was drafted behind Vogel says anything more or less of either young lady. They both bring their own strengths to their teams. I hope they both do well.

Here is another article about Megan from the Star Tribune.

No one is overlooking Jackrabbits star now

Fred Vogel remembers moving the family cars out of the garage in the middle of a cold Minnesota winter and turning on a small heater so his daugther, Megan, could practice dribbling. When she was done, Megan would come inside and start dribbling in the house -- much to the consternation of her mother, Nancy.
"I would dribble in the basement, and it would shake the china cabinet," Megan Vogel said. "So that really didn't fly."

Fred would then have to do some negotiating.

"Nancy would say, 'That's about enough of dribbling the basketball,' " he said. "I'd say, 'Compared to the alternative of what she could be doing, let's let her dribble the basketball.' "

There is no shortage of stories like this: the photograph of Vogel when she was maybe 5 or 6, asleep on the couch, with one foot resting on a basketball; Vogel, at age 12, asking for money to go to basketball camp for a birthday present; and, bringing it up to the present, the story of how Vogel impressed scouts at the WNBA predraft camp over this past weekend simply by doing what comes naturally: sticking around after everyone had left and shooting the ball.

These snapshots help create an overall picture of how it really isn't all that surprising that Vogel -- despite playing college ball at South Dakota State, a Division I independent that played in Division II when she started her career -- has a good chance of being chosen during today's WNBA draft.

"I think I play with a lot of passion," Vogel said. "If you don't absolutely love what you do, you'll never get to your full potential."

                            From the beginning

Growing up in St. Peter, Vogel wanted to play hockey like her dad. Mom, however, told her she had to play "a nice sport" like basketball. Vogel's disappointment quickly dissipated.

"I ended up falling in love with it," she said.

She also became very good at it. Aided by a strong work ethic and ambidexterity -- Vogel plays golf and writes right-handed but shoots a basketball left-handed -- it became clear she could play in college. The question was where.

Vogel said former Gophers coach Brenda Frese had strong interest in her, but after new coach Pam Borton came in, the Gophers' interest started to wane. Vogel said she wanted to stay close to home, and South Dakota State -- located in Brookings, about 150 miles from St. Peter -- had been one of the first schools to recruit her.

"I had a chance to be a part of a group that put SDSU on the map," she said. "That really excited me."

The Jackrabbits played in Division II her freshman year before making the jump to Division I. In Vogel's senior season, she averaged 17.5 points and SDSU went 25-6, losing in the quarterfinals of the WNIT.

"I don't know if anyone has had the same impact on our program," SDSU coach Aaron Johnston said.

                                From a ESPN chat transcript:

Justina (Hamden, CT): Chrissy Givens- Hi, congratulations on being drafted! Personally, what do you think is the most underrated player in this draft?

Chrissy Givens: (2:56 PM ET ) I would have to say Megan Vogel from SD State but because I've witnessed first hand what she can do.
