Good game. Thompson was not that good, just threw it up a lot.

Our D shut them down, don't think it's just because they missed shots. Jacks dominated this game. The nail in the coffin was an Intentional foul on Thompson. She clobbered Vogel on a fast break, then their coach got a T. Vogel hit 3 out of 4 Free throws, then getting the ball back we hit a 3. It was coasting from then out.

I recall the Hoffman twins wanted to attend the same school and that, right off the mark, limited which schools were interested. And, their older sister was a good track performer at USD (and is now an assistant coach there).

I don't think they were recruited by State. Nothing against them but where would they fit in State's program? Good for them they're able to attend the same school and play together.

The attendance was pretty good. Student section was spotty but you have to expect that with the semester being done. There actually was a fan group for Texas State but I would bet it was Mitchell residents. I could be wrong.

The Jacks post players were guarding Thompson pretty good. They would double team her. A lot of their shots were just drive into someone and throw the ball in the air. I'm surprised they didn't call any offensive fouls against them because their drives were mostly bull rushes. I will give her credit for playing most of the game as she isn't the smallest player.

BROOKINGS, SD – South Dakota State handed Texas State its first loss of the season defeating the Bobcats 67-51 in women’s basketball at Frost Arena Friday night.

The Jacks improved to 6-3 on the season while Texas State dropped to 7-1.

TSU opened the scoring with a long three by Jeana Hoffman as the shot clock expired, giving the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Then SDSU scored the next 13 points and led the rest of the way.

But it wasn’t without some anxious moments. Natalie Carda’s three-pointer gave SDSU a 34-18 lead before the Jacks went the last 3:53 of the first half without scoring. TSU closed within 34-24 at intermission, then scored the first five points of the second half, and it was 34-29.

Then guards Heather Sieler and Andrea Verdegan gave the offense a boost. Sieler hit a three to make it 37-29. A pair of free throws by Verdegan, a basket by Sieler and a basket by Courtney Grimsrud pushed the margin to 43-31.

Then, with SDSU leading 48-39, one of the crucial sequences of the game took place. With Megan Vogel driving to the basket, Tamara Thompson was called for an intentional call. That was followed by a bench technical. Vogel hit three of four free throws. Then, after the Jacks inbounded the ball, Verdegan hit a three and SDSU’s lead was 54-39.

After a three by Sieler made it 58-41, the Jacks scored their last nine points at the foul line. SDSU was 17-for-20 at the line in the second half.

Verdegan scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half and Sieler had nine of her 11 after the break. Vogel had her first double-double of the season, sharing the team scoring lead with 16 points while grabbing 10 rebounds.

Thompson led Texas State with 20 points while Jeana Hoffman hit three threes and finished with 13.

SDSU will be home again Sunday, hosting Alabama in a 2 p.m. game. Texas State is at Nebraska on Tuesday.

I think this win was an important win in terms of South Dakota images. You have two very good basketball players from Mitchell, whose sister is on the track staff at USD, and the big write up by Stu Whitney in the Argus yestereday, it no doubt brought fans to SDSU especially from Mitchell which is very important. We have had a very good alum following in Mitchell and I hope they made the trip to Frost. Considering finals were over, it was good to see our attendence creep over 2 thousand. For this early in the season and busy one at that, its a good crowd. Like everyone else it would be nice to a larger and more vocal crowd.

The Daktronics sound and sight appearence are adding another deminsion to a game at Frost.

BROOKINGS - There is no such thing as a six-point play in basketball.

Yet, the South Dakota State women used something like that to pull away from Texas State in Friday's second half for a 67-51 victory, spoiling the return of Mitchell's Hoffman twins to their home state.

SDSU (6-3) led by just nine points midway through the final period. That's when Megan Vogel hit three free throws, followed directly - because of a Texas State foul and technical foul - by a 3-point swish from Andrea Verdegan to zap the life from previously-unbeaten Texas State (7-1).

"We talked at halftime that we really needed some emotion," said Verdegan, who scored 11 of her 16 points in the second half. "That was kind of the spark for it." . . .

"It's about what I expected," said Jeana, who had 13 points and three rebounds. "We made a little run, but I think it came down to a few details. We didn't put together a complete game."

SDSU defeated the Bobcats 89-61 a year ago in San Marcos, Texas. This time, Texas State didn't let the Jackrabbits run and hide with their lead.

The Hoffmans, who started at the guard spots, showed no nerves at the start. Jeana quickly gobbled up a pass from Jenna on the right wing and calmly drained a left-handed 3-pointer as the shot clock buzzer sounded on the Bobcats' first possession. The shot came right in front of their parents Corinne and David Hoffman, who were sitting courtside with former Mitchell High coach Deb Thill and current Kernel assistant Dianne Way.

But behind lefty Vogel's three driving right-handed layups, SDSU followed Hoffman's triple with an 18-5 run. Vogel, a junior guard/forward, had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for the 13th double-double of her career and first of the season.

"(Megan's) had some games here recently where it's been hard for her to find the bottom of the net," SDSU coach Aaron Johnston said. "But she did a good job of getting us going and getting some offense."

After the Jacks' lead grew to 34-18 on freshman Natalie Carda's second 3-pointer, Texas State got hot as SDSU went cold

Jeana Hoffman - wearing No. 25 instead of her normal 21 because she left it in Texas - drained a long jumper to close the scoring at the end of the first half, while Jenna opened the second half with her lone field goal as part of a 13-3 Bobcat run to pull within six.

With SDSU leading 48-39 with 8:32 to play, Vogel took an outlet pass all alone on a fast break and was fouled hard from behind by the Bobcats' Thompson, who also got a piece of the ball. Thompson was assessed an intentional foul, setting off Texas State coach Suzanne Fox enough to pick up a technical.

Vogel hit three of four free throws, then took the inbounds pass and dished to an open Verdegan on the right wing. The sophomore guard's shot had barely left her hand when the 2,052 fans exploded, sensing a bull's-eye.

"We needed to find a connection," Verdegan said. "I thought we were really solid on defense for the whole 40 minutes. It was just on offense where we got sluggish."

Jeana had seven of her points in the opening half and was 5-of-13 from the field with three 3-pointers. Jenna provided snug defense while snagging seven rebounds and shipping off a game-best five assists.

SDSU's difficult week continues Sunday when they host Alabama, the first big-time university to play in Frost Arena. The SDSU players finished finals hours before Friday's game while trying to cope with the Thursday death of Kent Hegge, father of Jackrabbit junior Chelsey and former SDSU players Karly and Kassy.

"Alabama's from the (Southeastern Conference), one of the best women's basketball conferences in the nation, and we know it will be a big challenge for us," Johnston said. "The caliber of competition hopefully should keep us pretty well focused."

Considering finals were over, it was good to see our attendence creep over 2 thousand. For this early in the season and busy one at that, its a good crowd.

I'll say it was a nice crowd. For frame of reference, USD only had 902 fans at their Men's game against Briar Cliff last night.

Jacks win, 67-51

Unfortunately, this homecoming wasn’t so sweet.

In their highly-anticipated return to South Dakota, Mitchell natives Jeana Hoffman and Jenna Hoffman and the rest of their Texas State teammates struggled offensively and fell 67-51 to South Dakota State in a nonconference women’s basketball game Friday night here at Frost Arena.

It was the first time that the Hoffmans have played in South Dakota since playing for the Mitchell High girls’ basketball team at the Class AA state tournament in March of 2004.

SDSU beat the Bobcats 89-61 last year in San Marcos, Texas.

The loss was Texas State’s first of the season. The Bobcats are now 7-1 and travel to take on the University of Nebraska next at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday.

There was a total of 2,052 in attendance Friday and SDSU’s traditionally-hostile crowd lived up to its reputation.

“It was about what I expected,” Jeana said. “Being on the road, you have to handle adversity. We knew that coming in. I was a little nervous at first, but that comes with any big game.”

Said Jenna: “It was a good crowd with a lot of people. It was a fun game to play.”

Jeana had the better night of the two. She finished 5-of-13 shooting from the field and finished with 13 points. Jeana hit three shots from beyond the arc, with the first one coming at the 19:04 mark on a desperation heave as the shot clock wound down to put the Bobcats up 3-0.

Meanwhile, Jenna went 1-of-6 shooting from the floor for the game and finished with two points, five assists and seven rebounds. She also had four turnovers on the night.

SDSU’s biggest lead of the first half was 16 points. The Jacks went into halftime leading 34-24 after the Bobcats went on a 6-0 run to end the first half.

“We didn’t really stay in what we did well. We didn’t shoot the ball well.

We just didn’t finish.”

“We couldn’t get anything to fall in the first half,” Jenna said. “We tried to pick up our intensity, but it didn’t work out.

“I wish my performance would have been a little better.”

“We didn’t shoot the ball well in the first half,” Texas State head coach Suzanne Fox said. “We had a chance in the second half, but we just struggled offensively. That was probably the biggest disappointment I had with my team. I felt SDSU was extremely physical and we haven’t seen that type of defensive play and that type of physicalness this season. We didn’t respond well to it.”

SDSU started to connect from downtown and had its biggest lead of the second half with 22.8 seconds left at 67-49.

Fox said the Hoffmans were in a tough situation Friday.

“They played hard - they always do,” Fox said. “They’re competitors. They always have a great crowd up here and our kids were excited about that.”

SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston thought the Hoffmans played well in tough circumstances.

“They did a lot for their team,” Johnston said. “A lot of their shots were uncomfortable for them, though. We did a good job on them defensively.”

TSU finished the game only shooting 31 percent from the floor while SDSU shot 37.3 percent from the field.

For SDSU, Megan Vogel and Andrea Verdegan each had 16 points and Sieler had 11 points. Vogel also had 10 rebounds.
