    From Mitchell to Texas

Hoffman twins stayed together after South Dakota prep careers - now they're back to face SDSU

Texas State University women's basketball coach Suzanne Fox calls it "the ESP thing." Researchers refer to the phenomenon as twin telepathy.

However you label the lasting link between former Mitchell High School standouts Jeana and Jenna Hoffman, we can all agree on one thing.

    Their sister act is soaring.

After shaking up South Dakota's prep scene as a diminutive but deadly duo, the 5-foot-7 sophomores are now starting guards for Texas State - an NCAA Division I school located in San Marcos, roughly 1,000 miles from the Corn Palace.

The identical twins have a homecoming tonight at Frost Arena in Brookings, where the Bobcats face South Dakota State. Texas State brings a 7-0 record into tonight that represents the school's best start in 39 years.

According to Fox, the Hoffmans' ability to anticipate each other on the court has played a large role in Texas State's success.

"It happens a lot," says Fox, whose team opened its season with a 77-69 road conquest of Oklahoma State. "Whenever either one gets into a bad situation, there's an internal thing between them where they find each other - and typically good things happen." . . .

The Hoffmans, who sparked Mitchell to a Class AA state title in 2003, will suit up on South Dakota soil for the first time since ripping Roosevelt for third place at the 2004 Class AA state tournament at the Elmen Center.

"We're really excited about this," confirms Jeana, who injured her knee at practice Wednesday but still expects to play. "There will be a lot of family and friends coming out to support us, so it should be a fun atmosphere - even though we're on the road."

The road has been home to the Hoffmans since they completed stellar prep careers that included Gatorade Player of the Year honors for Jenna in 2003 and Jeana in 2004. Their desire to play Division I basketball together led to a long-distance gambit.

There were plenty of raised eyebrows when the twins signed with Texas State, a Southland Conference school of 27,000 students perhaps best known as the alma mater of former U.S. president Lyndon Johnson.

Fox learned about the Hoffmans from Willow Lake native Joe Reints, an SDSU alum and former Northern State assistant who served on her staff. They faced a difficult adjustment as freshmen so far from home, and Reints left San Marcos last June to become head coach at Lambuth University in Tennessee.

"It was a little tough when he left - but people move on," says Jeana, who started all 28 games in 2004-05 and averaged 5.7 points. Her sister started three games and managed 3.3 points a game.

There has been speculation that the Hoffmans - whose older sister, Sarah, is an assistant track coach at USD - would seek to transfer to a school closer to home. Jenna refused this week to comment about their plans beyond this season.

But the former Kernels, who share a dorm room and also a major (exercise and sports science), have seemed more comfortable and confident as sophomores.

Starters in all seven games, Jenna ranks first in team assists (4.4), second in steals (1.1) and fourth in rebounds (4.3), while Jeana is third in scoring (10.7).

"You can tell they really worked on their games this summer," says Fox, who guided the Bobcats to the NCAA tournament in 2003. "The biggest change with all our sophomores is that they came back with more confidence. They understand the travel demands and training regimen - all that stuff is not new to them now. We wanted (the Hoffmans) to work on their mid-range games as well as ballhandling and defense, and it's obvious they put in the hours to do those things." . . .

"They'll have a lot of pressure on them, because they're back in their home state, and all eyes will be on them," says Fox. "It's something we've discussed, and I know they've thought about not getting too high or low for this game. They've been in high-pressure situations before."

Texas State will face another tough foe when it visits Nebraska on Dec. 20. After that game, Jeana and Jenna will return to Mitchell with their family to celebrate Christmas at home.

Of course, the twins already know what gift they would like to give each other against SDSU tonight - and no conversation is necessary. . . .

    Go State! ;D

I'll be listening via the web. Lets welcome them to Frost properly. If the Hoffman's choose to transfer to USD this will be their first and last chance to play on a DI court in SD. Lets make it memorable.

Bobcat Women Open Six-Game Road Swing at SDSU
Hoffman twins to make homecoming in Brookings
        Dec. 15, 2005
        http://txstatebobcats.collegesports....121505aaa.html

Texas State opens a six-game road swing at South Dakota State Friday.
Tip is slated for 7 pm in SDSU's Frost Arena.

SAN MARCOS - With six home games and an unblemished 7-0 mark under its belt, Texas State will travel away from San Marcos for the first time since Nov. 19 when the `Cats play South Dakota State (5-3) in Brookings, S.D., Friday at 7 p.m.

Friday's game at SDSU's Frost Arena is the first of two northern road contests before Christmas, as the `Cats travel to Lincoln, Neb., four days later to take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Friday will also be a homecoming for two Bobcats as Jeana and Jenna Hoffman hail from Mitchell, S.D., which is about 120 miles from South Dakota State's campus.

Texas State played its closest game of the season last Saturday, when the `Cats knocked out. Texas-Pan American on a three-point basket by Jenna Ho. man as time expired at Strahan Coliseum. Tamara Thompson led the `Cats in the 67-65 win, scoring 24 including 17 in the first half.

Thompson leads the Bobcats on the season with 17 points per game, followed closely by Joyce Ekworomadu, who averages 16.1 per contest in seven games. Jeana Hoffman rounds out the `Cats double-digit scoring averages with 10.7 per game, while twin sister Jenna leads the team in assists with 31 on the year.

Texas State turns the ball over 15 times per game while forcing opponents into 21 giveaways per contest, thanks in part to nine Bobcat steals per game. On the offensive end, Texas State shoots 45.8-percent from the floor while hitting 38.7-percent of its shots from three-point range, and the `Cats are shooting 62.4-percent from the foul line in seven games this season.

South Dakota State will counter with a squad that shoots just 38.2-percent from the floor and 34.2-percent from the three-point arc. The Jackrabbits have been solid this season at the free-throw line, hitting 70.2-recent of their foul shots, including four players that hit 75-percent or better from the stripe.

The Jackrabbits' leading scorer is Megan Vogel, who is the only player to average double-digits for SDSU at 13 points per game. Three more players average at least eight points per contest, but only three Jackrabbits have connected on at least 40-percent of their field-goal attempts this season.

South Dakota State's defense forces 20 opponent turnovers this season, while the Jackrabbits have given the ball up an average of 17 times per game, and SDSU also averages ten steals per game as a group.

The Jackrabbits' come into the game having won two of their last three, posting a loss in their last game at Southern Illinois on Saturday. SDSU posted wins over Wisconsin- Milwaukee and Wisconsin before the loss, and the Jackrabbits also posted a win over Nebraska in their season opener on Nov. 19.

Texas State returns home Jan. 12 against Texas-Arlington after six games on the road. Texas State opens the six-game road stretch Friday at 7 p.m. at South Dakota State.

Texas St. is 7-0, but only 4 are against D-1 teams.

Texas St. has a strength of schedule rating of 331.

There are only 332 women's basketball teams in D-1. They have had an easy schedule up until tonight.

          Good Luck Lady Jacks.

I just read Whitney's article. Why would they want to transfer to USD when they are tops at a DI school? Doesn't make sense. "speculation" is a vague term and I don't think it means much.

Anyway, let's send home the bobcats with a higher schedule rating and their first loss. ;D

I'm just heading out to Brookings to watch the women win another game. I'm even planning on taking my dad to Nick's for a burger before the game.

I thought about staying home tonight since I have to work at 5:30 tomorrow morning, but I'll sacrifice a couple hours of sleep to watch the Jacks play anytime. ;D I can always sleep in late on Sunday so that I'm well rested to make the trip again to watch us beat Alabama.

Enjoy the burgers at Nicks and have an extra couple for me. I plan to spend a few late nights on the road next year returning to Yankton from Brookings. The 7 pm starts with one game are beneficial from that standpoint. Usually done by 9 pm.

As for the Bobcats, we should put a hurting on them. I'd prefer that we close this team out instead of the nail-biter that the Wisconsin game became or the lead we gave up against S. Illinois.

It did not say to USD. It said their sister is a coach at USD and they may want to transfer to a school closer to home. That would leave SDSU open along with other Div 1 schools.

I can't get an internet feed. I checked the Texas State site. It didn't look like they have one. According to the SDSU live state the Jacks lead 11-4 with 15:02 remaining ;D

Not sure there is a spot for them on the Jacks team. Not saying there is or isn't just not sure there are scholarships. I assume they would have to sit out a year to transfer within the division like men's BB.
