      Re: SDSU vs. Alabama (women)

Is there a RPI out there for the womens side yet this year. The old site said it wasn't going to post one this year. We should be looking pretty good I would think.

        The attendance was 1,433

The RPI rating is at this site

        http://www.rpiratings.com/womrate.htm

SDSU is at 86, but should move up with today's win.

Marquette is next and they are rated No. 42.

Vogel Reaches 1,000 Points As SDSU Tops Alabama

BROOKINGS, SD - With the game on the line, South Dakota State junior Megan Vogel picked an opportune time to score her 1000th career point. Points 1001 and 1002 were also part of the package.

On afternoon when SDSU had to withstand numerous Alabama comeback attempts, Vogel scored on a drive, was fouled and hit the free throw, giving SDSU a 73-66 lead with 38 seconds to play and the Jackrabbits went on to win 78-69 Sunday afternoon at Frost Arena.

SDSU improved to 7-3 with the victory, and will play at Marquette on Wednesday (Dec. 21). Alabama is 4-4 and will play at North Dakota State Tuesday.

South Dakota State overcame Alabama’s free throw shooting with its three-point shooting to beat the Crimson Tide for the second straight year.

SDSU had a 24-19 advantage in field goals, but Alabama had a 29-19 advantage in free throws. The Jacks hit 11 treys; Alabama made two.

And down the stretch, it was some three point plays the old fashioned way which made the difference. After Alabama tied the team at 58 on a free throw by Marverly Nettles, Vogel scored inside, was fouled and hit the free throw. Alabama got two more free throws, by Harriet Barnes, before Jennifer Warkenthein scored on an assist from Courtney Grimsrud, was fouled and added the free throw for a 64-60 lead. Then Andrea Verdegan drained her fourth three-pointer of the game making it 67-60.

Vogel had a chance to become the 25th 1,000-point scorer in SDSU history when she shot a pair of free throws with 1:11 to play, but she missed the second, momentarily holding at 999. Alabama got another free throw, this one by Navonda Moore, to pull back within four before Vogel ended the 1,000 point quest and ended the outcome suspense all at the same time.

Vogel, a junior from St. Peter, MN, who made her 71st consecutive start for the Jacks, tied her career high with 26 points and also led the Jacks with seven rebounds and six assists. Verdegan finished with 14 points while Warkenthein had 10.

Moore led Alabama with 18 while Barnes had 15 and Kate Mastin 10.

SDSU shot 42.1 per cent from the field (24x57) while Alabama hit 40.4 per cent (19x47). Alabama had a 38-31 rebounding lead with Moore getting eight.

            Re: SDSU vs. Alabama (women)

Just for fun and because it's Sunday night and I'm bored I put together the remaining womens schedule and the respective rankings of our opponents. Keep in mind that many of these games are on the road and there are no easy D1 opponents. But I think 20 wins is very likely and with that hopefully a trip to the WNIT in our first year of being eligible.

            Marquette-A 42
            Colorado-A 214
            Long Beach St.-A 148
            Idaho St.-A 211
            Kennesaw St-H 313
            San Jose St.-A 187
            IPFW-H 285
            Brown-A 182
            Texas CC-H 96
            Florida Intl.-A 115

I was waiting for her to stop play and ask the fans to refrain from cheering and clapping. Maybe she should have been watching the game a little closer instead of listening to the fans.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

My wife and I really enjoyed the game and thought the new score boards and sound system was awesome. I would sugget one improvement though, a better recording of the school song when the band is gone. We coud hardly hear it from our location. But other than that we greatly enjoyed the game and the new enhancements.

Great Game Jackrabbits and here a toast to many more.

BROOKINGS - On a day when the Frost Arena faithful were admonished for ringing cowbells, Megan Vogel reached a milestone and the South Dakota State women put on another impressive performance.

Vogel, a junior from St. Peter, Minn., scored 26 points in becoming just the 25th player in school history to top the 1,000-point plateau, as the Jackrabbits beat Alabama 78-69 in front of 1,433 fans Sunday afternoon.

"To be honest, I didn't know (about the 1,000th point) I got it until (Heather) Sieler told me," said Vogel, who now has 1,004 points and has started all 71 games in her career at SDSU. "I was more focused on beating 'Bama and getting a win on our home court.

"But, definitely, it means a lot to me."

Wins at Frost have been plentiful for the Jacks, who have now tasted victory 58 times in the last 63 outings in the friendly confines of their campus home.

Though the ever-present bell-ringers were asked by officials not to do so while the game was in progress, the showing by the Jacks (7-3), who won for the fourth time in five outings, gave the home crowd plenty of opportunities to make some noise the more traditional way.

SDSU, which plays at Marquette on Wednesday, trailed only twice in beating the Crimson Tide for the second straight year.

Alabama, which has now dropped seven straight non-conference road games dating back to 2004, led 2-0 and 4-3. The rest of the day was spent playing catch up. And each time the Crimson Tide (4-4) drew close or threatened to retake the lead, the Jacks had an answer.

Often, it came from Vogel, whose three-point play with 38.4 seconds remaining was the final dagger and got her into the 1,000-point club.

Alabama had closed within 70-66 with 1:03 to play. However, Vogel sealed the deal with a drive to the basket through a crowd, drawing a foul in the process. A delay in calling the basket good only heightened the excitement - not just in putting the Jacks out of danger, but getting the 5-foot-11 Vogel in the record book.

It became apparent early on that the Crimson Tide, who were playing just their second road game of the season, had their hands full. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Vogel and freshman Ashlea Muckenhirn gave the Jacks an 18-9 lead and forced Alabama to use a time out with just under 13 minutes to play.

"Overall, I was really pleased," said SDSU coach Aaron Johnston, who got 14 points from sophomore Andrea Verdegan and 10 from freshman Jennifer Warkenthien. "Sometimes we have been inconsistent with how we have started the game. We had a lot of players make contributions, and everybody should feel good about this."

The Crimson Tide, who play Tuesday night at North Dakota State, closed within 26-24 on a basket by Harriet Barnes with 7:11 left in the first half. Coming out of a timeout of their own, the Jacks responded with a 3-pointer from Sieler en route to a 39-34 advantage at intermission.

The Crimson Tide tied the score at 39 with 171/4 minutes left in the game, only to see SDSU unleash a 13-2 run to regain control. Sophomore Courtney Grimsrud started things with a basket underneath before Verdegan and Warkenthien each hit a 3-pointer. After Alabama's Navonda Moore scored, the Jacks answered with a Grimsrud basket and another 3-pointer from Verdegan for a 52-41 lead with 14:34 to play.

Alabama, which was led by Moore's 18 points, tied the game at 58 with six minutes left. But three-point plays by Vogel and Warkenthien and Verdegan's fourth 3-pointer of the day put the Jacks back on top 67-60.

One more Crimson Tide try at victory was thwarted, this time by Vogel's historic performance.

"We knew Alabama was going to be a good team," Vogel said. "We knew we had to play 40 minutes. I thought we played our most complete game."

And the Jacks did it without the cowbells.

The NCAA has a rule regarding the use of artificial noisemakers. If the Referees choose to enforce there is not much that we as fans can do, except ring them that much during timeouts and other stoppages of play.

All three Sioux Falls TV Stations had video footage on the 10pm Sports which is great considering the NFL and Stampede Hockey also was happening. Just a casual mention or nothing at all of USD's game against Mount Marty. Big headlines in the Argus. I think we are making progress with the Sioux Falls Media.
