Unlike the NCAA tournament a big factor in invitations is home attendance. Records are important but many teams are invited to the NIT each year when they have a large following. The tournament is in transistion now and is owned by the NCAA so that may not be as big of a factor but in past years it was obvious that teams with large following received invitations and home games.

Actually the WNIT is still independent from the NCAA. Just the men's NIT was acquired by the NCAA.

For once I agree with cadsev. This tournament depends on ticket revenue as they dont have the corporate sponsors that the Big Dance has to pay the tournament expenses.

Attendance could play a part in picking the final participants. Wins like over Florida Atlantic are important, especially since they are tied with Middle Tennessee for their conference lead, a team SDSU has beaten and should have beat in December. The key though is to keep winning.

When Florida Altantic draws 720 and we are drawing 1500 plus, this could also be a positive for the selection committee to consider.

I checked a couple of 2005 WNIT teams web sites to see what their tournament attendance was last year.

Numbers were in the 1500 to 3000 range. ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

(granted not an exhaustive study)

Our attendance numbers should not keep us out of the tournament.

Bottom line...every win counts in this WNIT race.  The important RPUI ranking to watch will be the one that the NCAA will be putting out this year....
On the NCAAsports.com webpage, they have a recent release stating the RPI ranking will be coing out soon.
THis is the one they will use for the 64 team bracket.   From what I've heard the WNIT will use that as a basis plus have the chance to select others based on " other criteria"....like fan support.  ...like the Jackrabbit Nation!

The NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Basketball Committees announced that they will make public for the first time the official Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) for their respective championships.

The official RPI is used as one of many tools to select teams to participate in the championships. The first official RPI rankings are scheduled for release on Thursday, February 2 and will include all games played through Monday, January 30.

Through the end of the season, the updated RPI rankings will be found at www.NCAAsports.com.

The RPI, developed in 1981 to provide supplemental data in the evaluation of teams for at-large selection and seeding of the championship bracket is only one of many pieces of information available to the committees.

With most of the 31 conferences that receive automatic bids to the men’s and women’s championship beginning league play in early January, the committees decided that releasing the RPIs later in the month would make for a more meaningful reflection of each team’s season.

Keep in mind that you need a .500 record or better to be invited to the WNIT. Some teams ranked ahead of us in RPI actually have losing records and some ranked ahead of us actually have no legitimate chance of finishing at or above .500. Just something to keep an eye on.

You are correct. You can get in with a .500 record if you are from a big name school with a large following.

A second year DI school will need 20 wins to be considered.

That is possible if the team continues to play with intensity 40 minutes per game.

Their defense takes other teams out of their game. By the time they recover they are behind by 20 usually. That is a long way to come back for most teams.

It is hard to push the ball inside on the road, because you don't get fouls called. (example: Free throws SDSU 2, FIU 20).

In order to win on the road you have to be able to hit the three.
