Re: Women's Basketball: SDSU vs Southwest Minnesot

Our Jacks were really getting boxed out especially in the first half. You would think the team with the most rebounds would be in the lead on the scoreboard, but this was not the case last night. SMSU had us 27 to 16 on the boards at one point. Weird, but Jacks broke up the passing schemes of SMSU several times. No doubt a lid was on the bucket at both ends.
All SMSU did was put three defenders in the lane, play a soft zone, and basically do the same on offense (three/four players in the lane for each rebound). The refs were "letting them play" inside. If the Rabbit outside shooters had been on at all, this would have been more like 100-31.

Right at the end the girls down low quit putting the ball on the floor and starting taking some 5-10 ft shots and what do you know they made most of them...
The Southwest Minnesota State women’s basketball team struggled offensively from the outset Wednesday night.
And as the game went on, things never got much better.
Division I South Dakota State held the Mustangs to just eight points in the first half, on its way to a 56-31 victory Wednesday night at Frost Arena in Brookings, S.D.
SMSU, which was led by six points from Sara Leidall, shot just 25 percent from the field and had two more turnovers (33) than points (31).
Megan Stadler had four points, three assists and three steals for the Mustangs.
The Jackrabbits (13-8), who began the transition to Division I last year, led 29-8 at halftime.
“They’re used to playing at a Division I level; we’re not used to that,” SMSU head coach Mike Power said. “They’re great at creating pressure. We’re not a great ballhandling team, and it showed tonight.
“Just the quickness, the speed of the athletes (they have) — it took us the whole first half (to get used to that),” Power added.
SDSU has wins over Nebraska (68-49), Colorado State (82-75), Wisconsin (68-65) and Alabama (78-69) this season.
SMSU (4-15) was no match for its Division I foes Wednesday.
The Mustangs’ 31 points was their lowest point total since the 1973-74 season, when they scored just 28 points against Minnesota-Morris.
“The shots we took, especially on the perimeter — there was always somebody in our face,” Power said. “We didn’t have anything easy.”
Heather Sieler led SDSU with 15 points, all coming on three-pointers.
SMSU did hold SDSU to 10 points under its season average. The Jackrabbits hit just 17-of-59 field goal attempts.
“I thought we came with good energy on the defensive side of the court,” Power said. I was really happy with how we played defense.”
Alaura Sharp had seven rebounds for SMSU.
However, because of cold shooting and turnovers, SMSU’s offense never got on track.
SDSU scored 26 points off of turnovers.
“We’ve got to get a handle on that,” Power said. “We’ve got to find a way to generate more offense.”
SMSU plays host to 18-2 Wayne State Saturday for Hawaiian Night.
“We’ve got to find a way to keep doing what we’re doing defensively,” Power said. “(If) we can shore up the turnovers, we’ll be able to get back into things.”
