Men now have to win on the road in OT.

Not sure which is the bigger shocker, the women winning 71-48 or the men losing 89-82 in OT.

This was a good game, we did get sloppy and had foul and turn over problems but had a big enough league to play through it. Shot well from the 3-point line also.

At 16-8 and with 4 games left could go 20-8 and let the chips fall where they may.
With going 21 - 7 last year not a bad first two years on this level. We have had 15+ wins every season since 83-84 ( thats a pretty good tradition of womens basketball at SDSU.

The South Dakota State Jackrabbits hit all but two shots in the first eight minutes jumping out to a 23-8 lead and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team was unable to recover Monday night at the American Bank Center falling 71-48.

A&M-Corpus Christi pulled to within eight at 25-17 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first half on a layup by Terra Andrews that capped a 9-2 run. The Jackrabbits, however, answered with a 13-4 spurt to close out the half with a 38-21 lead.

The Islanders (13-10) struggled shooting in the first half hitting just 26.7 percent of its shots, while the Jackrabbits (16-8) hit 51.9 percent in the first 20 minutes. South Dakota State, who won the first meeting two weeks ago 68-45, outscored the Islanders 24-12 in the paint, while hitting eight three-point baskets. SDSU races past Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The South Dakota State University women’s basketball team stayed perfect against fellow Division I independents this season and ran its winning streak to a season-best six games with a convincing 71-48 victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Monday night.

The Jackrabbits improved to 16-8 overall, including a 5-0 record against D-I independents. TAMUCC dropped to 13-10.

Monday's game followed much the same storyline as the first meeting between the two teams, a 68-45 victory by the Jackrabbits at Frost Arena on Jan. 26. SDSU got out the blocks quickly, building an early 14-4 lead. On the strength of making nine of their first 10 shots from the field the Jackrabbits maintained a double-digit advantage throughout most of the rest of the game, eventually doubling up the Islanders 38-19 late in the first half on a Courtney Grimsrud basket.

SDSU led 38-21 at the half.

The Jackrabbits continued their dominance in the second half, opening the half with a 12-5 run to go up by 25 at 51-26 on a three-pointer by reserve forward Stacie Oistad. SDSU led by as many as 33 points, 69-36, with five minutes to play.

Megan Vogel, who went 9-for-9 at the free throw line, led the Jackrabbits with 14 points, while adding six assists, five rebounds and four steals. Grimsrud contributed a career-high 12 points and shared game-high honors in rebounds with six. Jennifer Warkenthien added six boards as SDSU held a 35-32 rebounding edge.

Nine of the 10 Jackrabbits to play in the game made at least one basket.

For the Islanders, Terra Andrews tallied a game-high 19 points with five steals. Monica Pena added 12 points, all on three-pointers.

The Jackrabbits finished the night 25-of-52 from the field, 48.1 percent, including making half of their three-point attempts, 8-of-16. At the line, SDSU converted 13-of-16 attempts for 81.3 percent.

TAMUCC was held to 31.5 percent shooting from the field, 17-of-54. The Islanders made 5-of-13 three-point attempts for 38.5 percent, and were 9-of-12 at the line, 75 percent.

Turnovers were nearly equal as TAMUCC committed 23 miscues, compared to 21 by the Jackrabbits.

SDSU returns to action Saturday at North Dakota State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at the Bison Sports Arena in Fargo, N.D.

                Re: WBB at TAMCC

Without a doubt, the women are peaking at the right time. I repeat again: To win the next game at NDSU and sweep both them and T-A&M CC would be huge. I'm sure these big win margins are stacking up in the ratings. To bad we didn't win just two more early on against big schools.

I think the biggest change the last few games is how the inside game has stepped up. 4 more to go...

                      Nearing the end
'Rabbits jump out to big lead, rout stumbling host Islanders

                      By Lee Goddard Caller-Times
                      February 14, 2006

A frustrating season is just about over for the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi women's basketball team. For some players, it looked like the season was already done before Monday night's game.

A lack of effort - and a definite lack of focus, in particular on a second-half inbounds play - led to one of the worst beatings the Islanders have taken this season.

On an A&M-Corpus Christi schedule lined with Baylor and LSU, South Dakota State dominated the Islanders in just as convincing fashion as those ranked teams with a 71-48 victory at the American Bank Center.

The Jackrabbits made nine of their first 10 baskets, had a 10-point lead less than six minutes into the game and effectively took out A&M-Corpus Christi (13-10) before the half.

                      Effort is lacking

"One of the worst I've been a part of in my career," said Islanders forward Terra Andrews, who led all scorers with 19. "Lack of effort, lack of focus, lack of intensity. Why? You're going to have to ask each individual.

"Everyone gets along," Andrews added. "There's no catfights. There's no problems. I don't understand why things are like that this year. To put so much effort into it and not get rewarded my senior year is frustrating

"This is my last year in this school, on this team, in the position I'm in, here and now. Maybe some of the underclassmen will realize that when they get here next year."

SDSU (16-8) pushed the lead as high as 33 points with little more than five minutes remaining in the game. At the time, A&M-Corpus Christi had only five assists and, much like the first time the teams met - a 23-point Jackrabbits rout - only Andrews was scoring.

But the most embarrassing moment had passed. More than five minutes into the second half, coming out of a timeout, the Islanders broke their huddle and lined up on defense, down the court.

The only problem, as A&M-Corpus Christi coach Jodi Kest was screaming, is that her team should have been inbounding the ball. The Islanders were on offense.

"That sums it up right there," Kest said. "You can't come out and play any game - especially South Dakota State - and not be ready to play. For whatever reason, we didn't play with much intensity or emotion. I thought after the way we played (Saturday) against North Dakota State, we'd be ready.

"There's nobody that came ready to play except Terra," Kest said. "Terra was the only one that was competitive and wanted to win."

There were others, but most were playing for the Jackrabbits, a Division II national champion three years ago that is making the move to Division I.

SDSU shot more than 48 percent, and dominated in the paint, scoring 24 points inside. If the Islanders collapsed inside, the ball went out, where the Jackrabbits drained eight of the 16 3-pointers they attempted.

Only at the end, when senior Monica Pena came off the bench and knocked down three of her four 3-pointers, did A&M-Corpus Christi pull its deficit below 30 points, and nearly double its assist total, finishing with nine.

"That was very frustrating," Pena said. "There's so many things we can say to make excuses, but there really aren't any. They shot the ball really well at the beginning of the game, and maybe that brought our morale down, but but, I don't really know."

Mavericks#1 must have been in TAMCC's locker room before the game to give those women a pep talk. With all the negative stuff said during and after the game, I'm just assuming he was there to spread his gospel.
