      18-8 sounds good.

20-8 would sound better. 25-8 and an NIT championship sounds pretty good, too.

I'm hoping to be at the UC Riverside game next week . . .

        SDSU runs table versus independents
FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- Megan Vogel tallied game highs of 25 points and eight rebounds as the South Dakota State University women's basketball team pulled away in the second half for a 72-52 victory over IPFW Friday night.

With their eighth consecutive win, the Jackrabbits improved to 18-8 overall. SDSU also upped its record against fellow NCAA Division I independents to 7-0, completing a sweep of the season series. IPFW dropped to 4-21 overall.

Early on, IPFW gave the Jackrabbits all they could handle, building a 9-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Mastodons continued to hold the lead throughout much of the first half before Christina Gilbert gave SDSU the lead for good at 24-22 with a layup at the 4:54 mark, sparking a 9-2 run to go up 31-26 at halftime.

After IPFW got back to within four at 37-33 in the early stages of the second half, the Jackrabbits put the game out of reach with an 18-2 run over a seven-minute span. Heather Sieler started the rally with a three-pointer and Vogel added six straight points, including four on one play — a layup and two free throws after an intentional foul.

SDSU shot 50 percent from the field in the second half, finishing the game 27-of-61 for 44 percent. SDSU struggled from behind the arc, making 5-of-19 three-point attempts, 26 percent, to go along with a 13-for-19 effort at the line, 68 percent.

Freshman reserve Jennifer Warkenthien added 11 points, while Sieler and Christina Gilbert each contributed 10 as four different players reached double figures in scoring for SDSU for the second straight game.

Warkenthien also shared game-high honors in rebounds with eight as the Jackrabbits dominated the boards by a 48-22 margin.

IPFW also had four players in double figures for scoring. Ashley Johnson led the Mastodons with 16 points, while Johnna Lewis-Carlisle added 12. Off the bench, Juliane Hohne tallied 11 points and Tina Moen chipped in with 10.

The Mastodons shot 22-of-56 from the field, 39 percent, including 1-of-11 on three pointers. At the line, IPFW converted 7-of-8 attempts for 88 percent.

SDSU resumes action Tuesday at UC Riverside. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. Pacific Time (9 p.m. Central).
