  • Lady Jacks deserve a WNIT Invite!!

Here is a team that started the season strong, had a mid-season lull, and found itself in late January going on an 8 game winning streak(at this post).  It seems to me the WNIT tournament committee would want a team like the Jacks to participate in the tournament if for no other reason than the number of opportunities to issue press releases about this transitioning D-I team.

We all know that the Lady Jacks deserve the invite - play an up tempo style of basketball that will give the best teams in the tournament a game they won't forget. All of this seasons accomplishments with a group of five freshmen that are a force on the floor and with solid leadership from veterans like Vogel, Verdegan, Seiler and Gilbert  And let's not forget a Coaching staff that has the work ethic, D-I basketball coaching skills and knowlege, to bring these talented athletes to the pinacle of success and a WNIT championship.

The future is bright for Jackrabbit basketball and I hope the fans of SDSU basketball take advantage of the opportunities to come out and watch this team play and show the support that tells these young athletes how much they are appreciated.

    Any other thoughts??

    Welcome aboard.

I sincerely hope we do get an invite. Your daughter has been a charm of an athlete at SDSU. I have enjoyed her entire career.   We will hold her in our memories for a long time.

Probably name recognition and the transition period to D1 stand in the way, but lets hope not.

As I sit here in the warm FL sunshine, ;D I hope that Peggy and Fred have their marketing set. Frost is a fantastic arena. The fans need to pack the place for the Central St close-out game.

I was thrilled to watch the DII title game and I know that State can and would fill for a play-off game.

The Lady Jacks are a super team, and AJ has clearly shown that he's an outstanding coach. I hope that the WNIT recognizes this group, and gives them the chance to reach center stage. I believe they have the talent to go all the way.

The Jacks are playing like a team of destiny. If they keep it up for the last two games and a fluke of post-season rating arithmetic doesn't keep them out, they will do well in the NIT. I look forward to the extended season. The team is great fun to watch.

What a way for Sieler and Gilbert to end their career. Win a national championship your Freshman year and get (hopefully) an invite to the WNIT your Senior year. 8)

Last year it started on Wed-Thu-Fri Mar. 16-18, so this year it will probably be Mar. 15-16-17.

The standard was set for those two in their freshman year. I don't think they or the rest of the team will be satisfied to just get an invite. If I'm not wrong they will expect to win the thing. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

What a standard that will be for this years freshman!

The women have had a great year regardless.  Many more will follow!

                      Go Jacks!

Re: Lady Jacks deserve a WNIT Invite!!

Let's not get too far ahead of ourselves . . .

To get into the WNIT we'll need an RPI probably in the 70's. The reason is that there are probably ten conferences which get NCAA autobids but won't have an RPI that would put them in the top 96 (64 NCAA's and 32 NIT's). So they'll bump ten sub-64 RPI teams into the NCAA.

Then, unfortunately, you're to some extent playing a name recognition game. SDSU has won some games against some name teams, but whether that and their end-of-season streak would be enough to get them in if their RPI is floating in the high 80's is anyone's guess.

UC Riverside's Sagarin is #231 and their RPI is #252.

We need to have lots of teams above us get upset the last weekend of the year to knock down their RPIs, and we need almost all of the favorites win their conference tournaments to reduce the number of inferior teams getting autobids to the NCAA. All of that might not even be enough.

But hey, at least we're close enough to talk about it!

Re: Lady Jacks deserve a WNIT Invite!!

I appreciate your analysis Filbert, but I think it is a little flawed. The ratings you are using are not adjusted for strength of schedule, margin of victory, road games etc. The ratings that the NCAA and WNIT uses in selecting their teams are based on the adjusted RPI. The adjusted RPI is not available to the general public unless someone subscribes to the service.

From what I understand the Sagarin ratings are about as close to the adjusted RPI that is available. The Sagarin ratings have us listed at No. 82, which will put us on the bubble for making the WNIT.

Also some of the teams that you listed as making the WNIT may not have winning records. Oregon, Oregon St., Auburn, Penn St. and others need to have a winning record to be considered for the WNIT. By eliminating these teams, it will increase SDSU's chances of securing a spot in the WNIT.

Any way we look at it today, we still need to win the UC Riverside game and hope for the best. The Central Ohio game is against a D-2 school and does not count toward the RPI anyway. We probably still need to win both though to give the committee something to think about.

                            Go State!!! ;D ;D ;D

Re: Lady Jacks deserve a WNIT Invite!!

Well, I DID say it was rudimentary bracketology . . .

You know from being around a while that I'm usually one of the more optimistic posters around here . . . I'm mainly trying to make the point that we'll need help to get into the WNIT--just winning out isn't likely to do it for us. It's "necessary" but not "sufficient."

I don't think a rating in the 80's is going to do it for us. There are fourteen conferences (as of last Sunday) that don't have a team in the top 64 of the RPI, that means that fourteen high-RPI teams get bounced into the WNIT, which means that eighteen sub-64-rpi teams will make it into the WNIT. Eighteen plus 64 is 82. If the highest we're rated in any rating system is 82, then we've got big problems getting into the WNIT.

We need to get into the 70's in one or more rating systems, I think. I'm not sure how we can do that playing UC Riverside and a D-II school, unless lots of people lose games they're not supposed to lose. We're the newbie on the block, we don't have name recognition, so really, we'll have to beat the door down in order to get in, I don't think we can barely squeak in.

About the only way I see is when the selection teams look at wins in the last 10 D-I games . . . we'd be 9-1 in our last 10 if we beat Riverside. In retrospect, that loss at Brown may really, really, really come back to haunt us, as that's the game that's keeping us from finishing 10-0 vs. D-I.

A WNIT bid is not impossible, but it's a pretty high mountain to climb.
