    Jackrabbit players, coach earn independent honors
    South Dakota State women's basketball players Megan Vogel and Heather Sieler have been named to the Division I All-Independent Women's Basketball Team.

    In addition, Sieler was honored as Independent Defensive Player of the Year and Aaron Johnston has been selected as Independent Coach of the Year to highlight postseason awards announced Wednesday.

    Vogel, a 5-11 junior forward from St. Peter, Minn., was a first-team selection after averaging team highs with 16.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. An honorable mention honoree a year ago, Vogel ranked second among independent players in three-point percentage (.391), third in scoring, sixth in rebounding and seventh in free-throw percentage (.798).

    Sieler, a 5-7 senior guard from Huron, earned second-team honors after averaging 9.1 points and 3.29 assists per game, the latter of which ranked sixth among independent players. Sieler tied for the lead among independents with 55 steals en route to setting the Jackrabbit career record with 281.

    In earning a Defensive Player of the Year honor for the second time in her career -- she was a co-North Central Conference recipient during the 2003-04 season -- Sieler paced an SDSU squad that led independents in scoring defense (58.4 points per game), scoring margin (+10.9 points per game), field goal percentage defense (.390), steals (10.2 per game), rebound margin (+4.5) and turnover margin (+3.6).

    Johnston guided the Jackrabbits to a 19-9 overall record, including a 7-0 mark against independents, during the 2005-06 season. In six-plus seasons as head coach, Johnston has compiled a 145-49 record (.747 winning percentage).

    Other award recipients included Texas A&M-Corpus Christi senior forward Terra Andrews, who repeated as Independent Player of the Year, and Utah Valley State freshman center Robyn Fairbanks, who was honored as the Independent Newcomer of the Year.

    Cadwell On All-Independent Team
    South Dakota State guard Matt Cadwell has been named to the NCAA Division I All-Independent team for men's basketball twice.

    Cadwell was named to the all-newcomer first five, and was a second team selection to the all-independent team.

    Cadwell was the only SDSU player to start all 29 games this season ... he logged school record 1,056 minutes, 36.4 mpg ... led the team in scoring, 15.6 points per game; in assists, 3.3 apg (96); three-point baskets,46 (of 117, 39.3 per cent) and free throws, 125 (of 155, 80.6 percent) ... set SDSU freshman scoring record, with 453 points (old record was 444 by Matt Jones,
    2002, 31 games) ... also tied the SDSU freshman game scoring record with 34 points at Middle Tennessee ... scored in every game, in double figures in 22 ... Independent Newcomer of Week three times ... after Steve Holdren was injured in November,
    became SDSU’s go-to guy and was always the focus of opposing defenses.
