Just got the webcast up . . . sounds like we're having an exhibition game, 51-46 SDSU with 10:54 left in the game.

The girls really started off an played pretty cold. Lots of freshmen seeing time and learning the system. Looking forward to seeing what will happen. A really talented group of girls, led by Vogel.

                    Injury bug stings SDSU basketball

(T)he South Dakota State basketball teams opened the exhibition schedule by sweeping a pair of NCAA Division II opponents Tuesday night in the only home doubleheader of the season.

The scouting report? It's secondary to the injury report. Both teams won, but the breaks so far haven't been good. . . .

Earlier in the week, Megan Vogel, the lone senior on the promising Jackrabbits women's team, broke a bone in her left thumb (her shooting hand) when it got caught on a teammate's jersey. The injury is expected to heal on its own with time.

"It's a little sore, but nothing a little tape can't fix," Vogel said. "As long as I'm not in a cast, I'm not having surgery, I don't really care. It needs to be falling off in order not to play."

Her stat line didn't suffer. Vogel finished with 12 points on 5 of 9 shooting with 10 rebounds in 21 minutes in SDSU's 78-60 victory against Bemidji State. And the 5-foot-11 guard/forward didn't exactly coddle the wound, diving into the lap of an elderly man in the front row in an attempt to save a ball from going out of bounds.

The injury affected Vogel's celebrations more obviously than it did her play. Each time she left the floor, she held her left hand close to her body, instead offering only the right for her teammates to slap.

Jacks coach Aaron Johnston said he wasn't sure what to expect from Vogel - a Big Ten-type player in his opinion - and graded the performance just OK.

"She wants to play; it's her senior year," he said. "And she's feeling a lot of pressure, I think, with this team. At the same point, I think we're good enough where we've got to have healthy players out there that aren't going to be slowed by injuries. So she's going to have to learn how to play through it, or we're going to have to find other people to play." . . . (read more)

                    Go State!

AJ sounded pretty unhappy with the overall intensity. I'm guessing the next few practices will fix that.

The girls looked kind of flat last night. Shots didn't go down for us and the hustle and boarding kind of sucked. Things will improve. I'll give my thoughts on the game later today as i start a fun day now yesssss.

Did you get that from the post game interview?

AJ, from the time I've spent around him, really works on intensity and motivation.

My thoughts of the girls game.
Vogel and Grimsrud had decent double doubles. If they do that all year long it could prove to be an interesting year.

Bean had a line of 3 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists is good.

Warkenthien looked solid and showed why she deserves her starting spot.

Muckenhirn showed us why we got her. She is a spark and fun to watch.

The big girls off the bench picked up 16 rebounds for us and will be depended on to contribute this year. Oistad played great she could be starting by mid season if she has games like this. Abby played well in her debut as a rabbit with an 8 point 7 rebound game.

20 assists as a team 15 turnovers and 16 steals. We got to work on the turnovers because we can't do that and win against schools like USC, Minnesota, and others.

Overall I think our youngsters will be fun to watch as the grow and develop through out the year.
