Your final is SDSU 78, UC-Davis 61. The Jacks really turned this game around after playing a stinker for muh of the game.

DAVIS, Calif. - South Dakota State put 50 points on the board in the second half as the Jackrabbit women's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to defeat UC Davis, 78-61, Friday night at The Pavilion.

The Jackrabbits improved to 11-4 overall, while UC Davis dropped to 6-9 this season.

Early on, it appeared as though the Jackrabbits would cruise to a victory. SDSU opened the game with a 12-2 run and held the Aggies to an 0-for-11 start from the field. UC Davis did not score until Laura Thomas made a basket at the 11:17 mark.

Thomas' basket gave the Aggies a spark as they finished the half making 11-of-13 field goal attempts. Combined with 15 Jackrabbit turnovers, UC Davis went on a 12-0 run to grab its first lead at 24-22 on a Heather Bates three-pointer. The Aggies built the lead to six at 31-25 before Megan Vogel hit her third three-pointer of the half in the closing second to pull SDSU back to within three at 31-28.

By cutting the number of turnovers down to four in the second half, SDSU quickly caught up, tying the game at 32-all on a Jennifer Warkethien basket. The Jackrabbits regained the lead for good at 37-36 on a Stacie Oistad three-pointer with 16 minutes remaining, and Andrea Verdegan followed with a three-pointer on SDSU's next possession.

The Jackrabbits received an additional boost from freshman Maria Boever, who started the second half and responded by scoring 11 of her career-high 15 points in the final 20 minutes. The Worthington, Minn., native finished the game 4-of-6 from the field and 7-of-9 at the line. In all, SDSU reserves accounted for 34 points. Oistad added nine points, making three three-pointers.

Vogel led all players with 21 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the fourth straight game and ninth time this season. Jennifer Warkenthien narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds as SDSU dominated the boards, 37-22, including 15 on the offensive end. Ashlea Muckenhirn sank three three-pointers for nine points and tied a career high with six assists.

Jackrabbits Use Big Second Half To Overcome Aggies, 78-61

Aggies go cold early then heat up to battle talented South Dakota State

                      Jan. 5, 2007

DAVIS, Calif. - Megan Vogel scored a game-high 21 points on Friday night and South Dakota State used a decisive12-2 run just after the midway point of the second half as the Jackrabbits pulled away from UC Davis in a 78-61 nonconference women's basketball win at The Pavilion.

UC Davis, which missed its first 11 shots and didn't score for more than eight minutes to start the game before making their next nine attempts, fell to 6-9. Heather Bates scored 15 points to lead the Aggies while freshman Ashley Curry had 10. The Jackrabbits, who already own wins over USC, Alabama, Kansas and Virginia this season, improved to 11-4.

"I was really proud of our kids and the way we executed in the first half and early in the second," said UC Davis head coach Sandy Simpson. "We were playing a little timid early but then we realized we can play with these folks.

The Aggies didn't score a basket and missed their first 11 tries of the game before Laura Thomas converted a layup with 11:15 left in the half. But, despite the drought, UC Davis didn't find itself into too much of a deficit after holding South Dakota State to just seven points.

"When we finally scored we were fortunate they had only scored seven, then we picked it up," said Simpson. (read more)
