  • GDT: Jackrabbits vs Mavericks

This is the first game of today's doubleheader with Omaha The Omaha women bring what appears to be an improved squad from previous years. They handled IUPUI in Omaha this week. The center of the Mav's game is Shaw who scored 24 with 12 boards against a long IUPUI team. Omaha has 4 transfers that are playing this year. 2 Wichita St and 1 Texas Tech transfers are eligible to play this year. The transfers account for 2 of the starting slots and 72.5 minutes of play per game. The Mav's do not have any other great wins in the 8-7 record. They have been on the short side against KState, Creighton, Abilene Christian, Nebraska, Colorado St, Oral Roberts, & UCF. They may be starting to gel or they had a game of the year against the Jaguars. The Mav's are looking longer than earlier years and they still have a POY candidate in Shaw. The Jackrabbits will continue to show improvement as they are adapting to post-Miller life. Thompson is likely to draw more defensive attention today. (We can always be ready for Ober to be recovered). SDSU will need another player and/or substitute to bring a good game today. It should be a doable win as another contributor shows up for the Jackrabbits. Go Jacks!!

Game is broadcast on Midco and ESPN3.

If Omaha plays anything like they did the other night we are going to have our hands full. They also took what appears to be a very good ORU team to the buzzer the week prior.

There's so little room for error against decent teams with Ober out. Combining her offensive and defensive effects, she's worth at least 10 points per game more than the current version of the Jacks. The Young/Thompson/Guebert trio can not afford to have an off game these days. Hopefully they get rolling early today.

Defense step up a little, get rebounds, especially more defensive,IPFW got some possessions where they had three tries at the hoop, that's disappointing to see playing against such a short team.We need to get into better rebounding position(fighting for) on their shots and box out (yeah, more boxing out preaching,a little too much standing still in one spot staring at the hoop). Some help scoring from the bench will help alot, but everyone playing hard on defense. One of those playing a team coming in with lots of confidence type games .Will be a hard fought game from the get-go I'm thinking.GBGBGJ

The shorter bench requires that Alexander and Palmer stay out of foul problems. Those 2 have done a solid job on defense and they are beginning to contribute more offensively with assists and some points. These 2 are becoming more reliable as the experience goes on. Alexander has dribbled into the paint with more floor vision. She had many shots blocked early in the season as a reserve. Omaha is playing better as the transfers blend into the system. I still am thinking that the Jackrabbits have the talent to handle the Mavs at Frost.

Liked Annabells presence on the court agaist IPFW.Very good ball handler, seemed to move well without the ball, very fluid motion, seemed more comfortable out there that game.I think she'll turn out to be a pretty good player in the future.Bench developing slowly, but they are playing better with more experience.Tracy does some nice things like passing, etc.Bultsma not in too much lately, got a nice shot, just needs more confidence in shooting it once in awhile.Ena contributing some,Flaata too.Not a high scoring bench, they should all be trying ways to be more assertive on offense (take some shots when warrented),without forcing things and committing TO's or fouls, and play solid on defense for the most part.

I did not see any tape etc on Annabelle's fingers. That might be a positive sign of her recovery from the hand injury this year. She did not make the normal game rotation so the timing thing might be an issue. It would be great to have another pg to keep Guebert at the 2.

Like the way the Jacks are pushing the ball up the floor. Best way to beat the zone is to not allow it to get it set up.

At the 1/2 ,33-23 Jacks. Not playing our best, but thankfully Omaha is playing even worse, although that might be attributed to us playing tough defense.Impressed with the play of Palmer so far, playing with a lot of poise, looking very confident and relaxed out there tonight. The Ober injury, however misfortunate it is (very),has been good for Palmer developing into a very good player for the Jacks.

Jacks had the final possession in each quarter and screwed both up. Alexander needs to move the ball in those situations and not turn it into a dribbling exhibition.

Flaata's got some really nice ,quick moves,if only she could finish, she could be a heck of a player. 58-43 jacks

limit their possessions, and we should be able to ride this one out

It's not hard to see progress as this team adjusts to their new reality. Young clearly is getting more comfortable carrying the offensive load. Flaata is going from just a "body" to someone who can contribute a little offensively. Palmer is turning into a really nice all-around player for a sophomore. Thompson is getting better in both ends as a post.

I wouldn't be surprised if we drop a couple road games while Ober is out, but this team should be rock solid once she is back to full speed.

If you wanted to see a game with defense, you needed to be there for the women's game! The pressure had the Mavs out to the mid court line. This was a refreshing game to enjoy what good defense could bring to the results of a game. The Mav star Shaw made 8+ points late in the game when it did not make any difference. The women's defense was rock solid.

It was nice to see a couple players score 20 pts or more. When the balanced scoring isn't quit so balanced, it's nice to see that someone or two can make up for it.Not every game,it's still a team sport, but when we need it,we know someone is capable and can come through.Without those contributions from everyone who played,we probably wouldn't have won either,so every point counts and is valued in a win over a tough team.Plenty of tough games ahead,so feeling good how the team continues to find the ways to win.
