  • GDT: SDSU jackrabbits vs George Washington Colonials

GW brings a 7-3 record to Frost. They have defeated Illinois, Princeton, Coppin State, Villanova, FGCU, Western KY, and VCU. The 3 losses were Syracuse, American, and Georgetown. 6'2" senior forward Caira Washington will lead the charge for the Colonials. GW averages 69 points per game and lead their opponents by 10 boards per game. GW is averaging 6.5 blocks per game as well with Washington leading that group with 2.1 blocks/game and 6'5" forward Prange averaging 1 block per game. GW is 2 time defending Atlantic 10 Conference champion and they are picked to finish 4th this year. GW has 8 players averaging 15 or more minutes per game. The Jackrabbits should not lose 2 home games in the same week. Jackrabbits win a hard fought game at Frost today. Go Jacks!!

UWGB loss has to be forgotten.UWGB is a very good team and will beat lots of other teams as well this season.Macys injury is a loss, for sure, but,we still have a starting 4 from last yr. They'll have to step up a little bit as well as the bench ,who have to develop a little bit quicker now that we are relying on them even more. The team can still have a very successful season. This game happening so close to losing Macy (assumption) ,will be a difficult task for the Jacks,I wouldn't be surprised if we lose this one,but knowing what fighters this team has,I really think we pull off a win.I have faith in that the coaching staff will have them ready to go out and play well. The fans should be rallying behind the team and will be cheering them on ,I suspect.GBGBGJ

The game is at 1 pm and it is available on the radio connection or Jackrabbit Sports Network.

Can't buy a bucket....got to put player behind their center to prevent the lob,or force her further under the basket so there's no room for a lob pass. She's got a lot of their early points.11-3 GW

Hopefully Jacks can put together a run like they did in 2nd. This seems like it could be headed for OT

Jacks pull away in 4th, and survive last two minute onslaught. Win 60-55. Eno Viso, player of the game. Nice that she grabbed chance to excel. Both AJ and Brad felt she shined today.

Viso did a solid job on defense today. She was active on both ends of the court. The game would not have even been close if the Jackrabbits could have shot 50% on uncontested layups. The team could have been a bit tight with Macy Miller not on the floor. GW had Guebert identified on the arc. The Jackrabbits seemed to have soft hands at times today on rebounding as the Colonials took the ball away when it appeared Jackrabbit control. The last quarter the Jackrabbits were stronger on the boards and control. The 11 turnovers by the Jackrabbits was very good compared to the 20 turnovers by GW. The Jackrabbits shot 13% in the first quarter and they trailed by 18 before getting it to 22-7. That was more excitement than I was expecting early. This gave AJ his 400th win as coach.

Guebert seemed very comfortable when she played the point, which should be expected as she played there in high school. But that would probably take away some of her 3 point looks as opposed to playing her on the wing. Alexander was really off on her shot - she will need some time to adapt to starting if she continues in the starting line-up.

Lexi was as tight as anyone today. She had several shots that did not find iron. She found a couple of layups and hit her free throws. I am guessing that she will not get too much defensive attention beyond the arc. Madison only took 1 3 point shot today in 37 minutes of play. She had plenty of attention out there. She did find some success moving toward the baseline for passes and closer shots. Kerri Young had trouble heating up today. She scored 10(3/4 FG & 3-3 FT) of her 13 in the 4th quarter on 4-11 shooting and missing one free throw today going 4-5 FT. This is a good game with Macy Miller sitting and the team grinding out a win.

This was an ugly game. The 1st quarter was comprised of missed layups, poor shooting in general, and a complete lack of fire/hustle. Basically, the girls didn't come to play. The rest of the game was scrappy defense with just enough offense to battle back and win. Overall, very gutsy win against a very good team. Impressive considering how bad we were in the 1st quartet.

I would agree with bigticket1 except Alexander actually shot as well today as she has on the season. She is now shooting .095 on 21 attempt from 3. Absolutely a putrid shooter. She did work hard and gets a fair number of rebounds for her size, but is a liability on offense. Teams are starting to sag off her to double down and practically begging her to shoot. That's what makes her percentage so very bad is her looks are generally wide open.

Guebert was seriously BALLIN' on the defensive end. I would expect an offensive struggle when expending that much energy in defense. She has become the leader of this team now with Macy down. She was the key to us getting back in this game.

Ober was really a near disaster on the offense end and accounted for 3 easy missed layups and a couple others she should have had. However, she shot well from the line and was a beast on he defensive side. #3 from GW killed us in the first from over the top lob passes. Once we stopped fronting her she became irrelevant because Clarissa was just too physical for her.

Ellie was very uneven today and had 3 fouls midway through the 2nd quarter. She was consistently good on the defensive end, but was often loosing balls on rebounds/passes because it appeared she just didn't want the ball as much as the other person. Same thing on offense as she had some good moments and then some headscratchers. She missed a wide open layup on a great dribble drive. Also, late in the game got a rebound near the basket. Everyone basically left her alone for some reason and it seemed it took the crowd yelling at her to shoot for her to realize it as she was looking to pass the ball back out. Her defense/intensity in the 2nd half was much better and was another key to us getting the win.

Kerri was good on defense (a common theme) but struggled on offense. The purist in me wishes she would use the glass on short angled shots. I just feel like she should step up more as she is too athletic to disappear at times.

I must have been at a different game from everyone else because I don't feel Viso played well at all. She was not good on defense. There was a couple of times where she didn't seem to know who she was supposed to cover. She had a chance to grab a ball going out of bounds, but let it go and GW saved it and Ena ended up fouling the player on a shot. She hit a 3 and had one rim out, but was WIDE open on all 3 she took. Also missed a wide open layup and had a bad turnover. The 2 pointer came on a weak side rebound when her defender left her to double Ober and Clarissa luckily missed so badly it went to Ena for an open layup. It was a heads up play.

Sydney Palmer is in the same boat as Alexander when it comes to shooting. She will be better when the quality of opponent goes down. She is also getting wide open 3s and hitting them at a .286 clip. Didn't seem she played much in the 2nd half because her defense is not up to snuff.

Flaata is a D1 level athlete and rebounder. However, she's not a DIII level player on offense. She missed a wide open layup so badly she actually missed the rim altogether. On past teams she would never see the court.

So a big win today and was won on guts. Felt the first quarter was an it of a hangover from the last game, but all credit to the girls for battling back from a 18 point first quarter deficit.

I think the positive about Viso is that she has basically been on cleanup duty and today she was playing more crunch time minutes. The role that she has now will require some rebounds, make those layups, maybe an occasional long shot, and play defense. Defense is exactly what will keep Palmer with fewer minutes regardless of her shooting percentage. AJ will require defensive energy for the women. Viso may not be Guebert quality defense at this time, but she is showing some glimmers. Guebert can keep in front of nearly any player. Her footwork is outstanding. I agree that Flaata is a capable defender and that she cannot get her head up quick enough before she releases the ball "towards" the rim. She must be doing something right or we would not see her on the floor. AJ will play a freshman anytime they are ready. It was a game that was played without the floor general and a win is recorded.

The ugly part of the game is shared by the team. It cannot be pointed at one or two players. 32% shooting and 22% 3 pt is more than the wrong people shooting the shot. There were-as stated earlier-many uncontested layups missed. I am still ready to attribute that to playing without Macy Miller and the resulting nerves of missing the floor general.

I agree with Oldhare. Losing Macy has to be in all of their heads. For Kerri, it has to be even harder to lose Macy since they played high school ball together and this is her senior year. Ive never liked the phrase, "they didnt come to play". I see this all the time whethers its the womens team or mens. They come to play every night wanting to win. But some nights things dont start out very well. And i think for the girls today, it was still Macy. Now that they have that first win without her, they can move on with more confidence. But hey, they have Louisville next. Will be a tough game with or without Macy. I must have been at a different game than SteelSD. I didnt think Ellies game was quite as bad as he did. Im pretty sure she wanted the ball just as bad as anyone else.
