Seven South Dakota State University women's basketball players, including three repeat selections, have been named to the 2006-07 Division I Independent All-Academic Team.

Repeating on the 32-member team were senior Megan Vogel and juniors Courtney Grimsrud and Andrea Verdegan. Vogel, a forward from St. Peter, Minn., has put together a 3.83 grade-point average while pursuing a major in health, physical education and recreation. A Sisseton native, Grimsrud has compiled a 3.95 GPA in biology, while Verdegan, from Glen Flora, Wis., has a 3.57 GPA in psychology.

First-time selections to the team included four sophomores: Morgan Meier, Ashlea Muckenhirn, Stacie Oistad and Jennifer Warkenthien. Meier, an Oshkosh, Wis., product, has compiled a 3.32 GPA in interior design, while Muckenhirn, from Osceola, Wis., was the lone player on the team with a perfect 4.00 GPA. Oistad, from Sartell, Minn., holds a 3.94 GPA in nursing, with Warkenthien, a foward from Willow Lake, posting a 3.80 GPA while majoring in early childhood education.

SDSU's seven selections were the most among the 11 Division I independent schools. All seven SDSU players were part of the 2005-06 Jackrabbit squad which led all divisions of women's college basketball with a team grade-point average of 3.73.
These girls are pretty smart. And have some bright futures ahead of them 8-).

    Re: Academics

Bluehat, once again a great point. As a university we should focus on academics instead of athletics. Let's recruit those who score above a 25 on the ACT, and lets not worry about winning.

I'm not that far with you I do believe though that all colleges should recruit kids who can meet and exceed the ncaa rules for playing. That includes in and outside the classroom.

        Re: Academics

IF the big schools would put hte emphasis in the right areas, the level of thier students would have to go up wouldn't it? Univ. of Miami Football team this year was a complete embarrassment and the President of the school, Donna Shalala should be completely embarrassed for 1) the players actions and 2) for the schools response.
Sorry to change the subject from Academics to on field actions.

South Dakota State University basketball players Megan Vogel and Courtney Grimsrud have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors for their efforts on the court and in the classroom.

Vogel, a senior from St. Peter, Minn., was a selection to the five-member University Division First Team with a 3.83 grade-point average in health, physical education and recreation. She will advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration later this month. Vogel currently leads the team with averages of 17.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Grimsrud, a junior from Sisseton, made the second team with a 3.95 GPA in biology. The team's starting center, she leads the Jackrabbits with 34 blocked shots and contributes 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.

Does anyone know what some of these ladies are planning on after graduation? Grad school in the cards for a few of them?

Brigg's scholar, pre-med, wants to be a family physician and return to Sisseton (we all said that when we applied to medical school).

If Courtney is a Brigg's scholar, would that be one that doesn't count against the 15. I have a nephew that is a Brigg's scholar and it is a full ride academic scholarship. Just a question.

The Briggs Scholarship isn't a full tuition, fees, room/board scholarship. I would assume the bball team picks up the rest of the tab.  I think if the team even gives a partial scholarship it counts towards the 15 available.  I could be wrong though on that last point?

Correct me if I'm wrong (maybe Filbert and 89rabbit can help) but you can't give partial scholarships in D1 basketball, can you? Seems like I read that on this board once.

I talked to Megan a while back and she said it's either Europe to play for a couple of years and then to graduate school (coaching or sports administration) or right to grad school for her.

In NCAA D-I Women's Basketball you have 15 scholarships that can be spread over 15 players.  In D-I Men's Basketball you have 13 scholarships that can be spread over 13 players.  In CS Football you have 63 scholarships that can be spread over 85 players.  So in basketball there is no reason to give less then a full ride unless the school doesn't have their scholarships fully funded or the student didn't need a full scholarship (in which case the athletic department would just be saving $$$).

Which would most likely be the case in question. The academic scholarship would pick up part and the athletic scholarship would pick up part. The athletic partial still counts towards the 15 used, but saves the AD some money in the end.

AJ spoke at the Sioux Empire Staters meeting on Tuesday. He did state, as MD said, that Courtney would be attending Med School and wanted to go back to Sisseton. He also said that Megan is very interested in continuing to play basketball after college. He stated overseas as a possibility and also mentioned the possibility of the WNBA. Even if she doesn't make it, it's pretty cool to hear the WNBA is a possibility.
