  • How does this team stack up statistically?

So, how does this team stack up statistically to other teams in Division I? If you are considered a good team, you should be able to score a lot of points (Scoring Offense). Like wise you should hold your opponent down in scoring (Scoring Defense). When you have the ball, you should be efficient with it (Field Goal Percentage). When the opponent has the ball, you need play good defense and contest their shots. (Field Goal Percentage Defense).

I looked at the NCAA statistics through 2/15/07 to see how many schools were listed in the Top 50 of all four catagories. This list is small, with only 6 schools being able to claim this distinction. They are, Duke, North Carolina, Ohio St., UCONN, Stanford and South Dakota State. All of these teams are ranked in the AP Top 25, with the exception of SDSU. The rankings are as follows:

    No. 1 Duke
    No. 2 North Carolina
    No. 4 Ohio St.
    No. 5 UCONN
    No. 9 Stanford

That is some pretty elite company people. I know we already have another thread comparing the 2003 team to this year, but I can't imagine any other team at SDSU being able to claim they are in the top 50 of these four catagories in all of D-1 in the same year.

If you wanted to take this a couple of steps further, you could also include Rebounding Margin. All six schools are also included in the Top 50 in this catagory. You could also make a case for making 3-pointers in a game. After all if you can't make 3's, then the defense will sag into the middle and make you shoot 3's. Duke, Ohio St., UCONN and Stanford are not in the Top 50 for this category. Only North Carolina and South Dakota State are. You then could make the arguement that anyone can jack (pun intended) up a bunch of 3's in a game and make the Top 50. Then you should also include Field Goal Percentage for 3-Point attempts. Which North Carolina is not in the Top 50 for Field Goal Percentae for 3-Point Attempts. However, South Dakota State is in the Top 50 of this category.

You could also add Free Throw Percentage, in which South Dakota State is also in the Top 50 of all D-1 teams. How about Scoring Margin you may ask? Yes South Dakota State is in the Top 50 in Scoring Margin. How about Win-Loss Percentage? Yes, again!! How about Assists per Game? Yes, SDSU is in the Top 50 again!! How about Steals Per Game? Yes!!!

The NCAA tracks the Top 50 teams in 15 Categories. Of these 15 Categories, South Dakota State is in the Top 50 in 12 Categores. SDSU is listed in more categories than any other school in Division 1 women's basketball. The next closest is Duke, which is listed in 11 Categories. North Carolina, Ohio St. and Tennessee are listed in 10 Categories. Stanford and UCONN are listed in 9 Categories.

This team has really put together a really good statistical season. I hope that everyone gets a chance to see them play the last two games at Frost this year. It may be a while before we see a team this good again representing our school.

    Go Jacks!!!
    Go State!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

The three categories that SDSU are NOT among the leaders, two are the negative categories:

      Personal Fouls committed
      Turnovers

The one positive category not in top 50 is

blocked shots, where NDSU is the only transitional represented.

We should go into the WNIT as a high seeded team.

      Great WIN OUT Ladies!
