Good win last night. IUPUI plays hard. They are gonna be tough on the road and a tough out in the Summit League Tourney.
Its great to have a balance scoring attack and if the starters get foul trouble or struggle, someone on the bench is more then ready to probably give a nice lift. But I agree, Waytashek hasnt put up the numbers she is capable of doing. Maybe she is putting to much pressure thinking she has to be the star. Her shooting ability and skill set should allow her to score more then its shown lately. Also it just seems this way to me with out really looking at the stats, but we dont have that lethal 3 pt shooter, Rotert or Young type who can get us 3s from any where at any time at a pretty high clip. We have good shooters but dont seem to that that 1 go to 3 pt shooter when we need it.

Tara Heiser was the go to 3 pt shooter last night. There were plays for her to get the ball. Waytashek was getting a ton of defensive attention. She did get a couple of open 3's which did not drop. IUPUI has some very quick players on defense. Goss does well on both sides of the ball and she was matched much of the game on Waytashek. Bellamy pressured Gabby continously when she brought the ball upcourt and during the playmaking. IUPUI also plays the bench more minutes. IUPUI bench played 80 minutes to the Jacks 78 minutes. IUPUI has not allowed bunches of points and it is easy to see why. They also run the clock a bit on offense to limit possesions.

What I seem to get out of these ladies the last few games is that they are playing with a sense of panic instead of playing with purpose. They are rushing things instead of settling down and thinking about what they are doing, bad shots, bad passes, leaving people uncovered or losing them. A win is a win but if they dont start contolling themselves there may not be many more.

I noticed that too, they didnt look smooth playing. a lot of the really good sdsu teams we have had in recent history usually is a bit better at those things. Never getting rattled, finding the open player for the easy shot, this team has that potential obviously but seems its still trying to work out the kinks of what they are suppose to be doing.

Waytashek and all the Jacks are unselfish players, but Waytashek makes the good pass when the defense limits her own scoring production. We want the ball getting to the player with the greatest chance to score, whoever it is.

It makes me laugh when people talk about a certain player (hypothetically speaking) who can score points evey game, then i chk their stat line for a few games , and they take 20 shots , hit 6 for 14 pts,2-7 3pt shots, and 7-15 FT's Total points is 21 pts ,but they come at a cost to the team, as efficiency isn't what it should be.Look at ND ,everyone on that team shoots mostly at a high percentage, that's why their #2 in the polls. And they've got burger girls who they recruit nationaly every yr. Same with UConn etc.We do pretty good with local talent.

It was amazing that at least 3 times in the second half that our guards threw passes that either hit the intended receiver square in the back or went right past them because they were trotting up the floor with their backs to the ball. Heiser and Boever each were credited with turnovers on perfectly fine passes that should have been caught.

I'm just not impressed with Boever as a point guard at this point in her career. She makes some impressive offensive plays, but make so many forced and unforced errors and turnovers. She continues to pick up her dribble and then gets swarmed by the defense and makes a turnover. It was obvious Aaron was frustrated with her play last night.

He was very complimentary of Heiser,Boever and Strop on his post-game radio interview and said the other starters left something to be desired.

Heiser was why we won the game IMO, making those 3s in the first half was huge when both offenses were struggling. Clarin was out of control and a non factor, Strop wasnt much since being in foul trouble and only had a key rebound from what i saw late in the game, Boever on D was pretty solid though, I think she gets frustrated with quick hands just like she guards other pgs. Walters hasnt really played much it seems but with her threat to knock down a 3 figured in some back and forth hard fought games her shooting could be a welcome surprise....unless she is hurt or her D is a liability.

Seems like we should be able to spread the floor a little bit better, sometimes i feel watching like they get to bunched up which leads to difficult passing lanes and extra defenders to make it harder to move around. the other thing is some games and clips watching looks like in the post they get the ball where ever and just hoist up a shot and really dont have great position on the block or really well developed up and under moves or turns to the baseline to get a better looking shot. seems like a free for all sometimes when it gets down low.

I noticed several times that she would freeze well before the trap actually arrived. She just stoped moving and kept dribbling waiting for them to come and get her before she was even close to crossing midcourt. Then it would get ugly as she tried to toss a long pass out of the trap.

Handling a press has been a consistent weakness for the Jacks. I remember a few years ago when ORU had Luper and a healthy Bigham and their press gave the Jacks fits for a couple of years. Not sure if our guards aren't quite as quick ,or if our scheme for breaking a press is partly to blame.

Probably both, but that duo gave every team them played a bunch of headaches with their press and traps. It sure is a reocurring theme.

People have to hustle during a press, standing still when they are waiting for a pass isn't good.

And it wouldn't hurt to have someone come back and set a pick for the guard bringing the ball up to drive past.

We kept dribbling into a trap. That was the problem. Breaking a good press involves good ball movement and less dribbling. Took us awhile to adjust.

Dee Dee Bellamy was also an extremely good on ball defender.
