Re: EXHIBITION GDT: SDSU vs. BEMIDJI STATE

OMG was that something to watch Clarissa Ober and Kerri Young tonight (not that there wasn't plenty of firepower from the rest of the team). That is the best performances (from both) that I have seen from freshmen since maybe Shannon Schlagel. Ober is much more physical than I expected. Aggresive on both ends, defended well, rebounded well, and is a very good shooter with an excellent left handed swing shot. Young is everything I heard she would be (didn't get to watch her in high school). Aggressive and athletic, she is going to be something to watch in the years to come. Those performances take nothing away from the starting five, but they were in the second group in. Should also mention that Chynna Stevens looked pretty good in a more limited role. Steph looks to be back on top of her game, along with Megan Waytashek, Mariah, Hannah and our two-deep point guards. Megan Stuart looks improved to me also, and will see a lot of time. Tiffany Flaata, our other 6-2 freshman won't play this year because of injury so will redshirt. Tara Heiser and Rachel Walters will get time, but Rachel is going to have a hard time staying ahead of Young in the lineup IMHO. And I am afraid Jessica Hart will also see very little playing time (don't know whether they might redshirt her until next year when Paluch and Heiser are gone, that is, of course, if she wants to also.) Questions on redshirting also are in context to what is recruited down the line, and balance in the classes. Bemidji is not a great team, but had some good players and shot well.

I am PUMPED for this year to get started in earnest. It will, of course, be interesting to see how we stack up against a tough non-conference schedule in order to gauge our conference run.

These freshman have what might be considered potential.. Ober seems comfortable on offensive set. She is not ready to play good defense, but she does a good job of rebounding. Young runs court well and she has good hands. she slides around similar to Megan W. Stevens played some, but these two had more time on the floor. It is great to have these freshman at SDSU.

Another note about the game would include Tara Heiser coming in as PG after Gabby and Chloe approached foul trouble in the second half. The referees were giving the women a glimpse of the new contact limits. The depth of this team may be very helpful as the teams learn the new system of fouls. Megan W also showed some nifty assists this afternoon to add to her large skill set.

The coaching staff seems to have a very good eye for picking talented recruits,it seems.

MSU-Mankato,next Fri,will provide a much sterner test. The Mavericks are picked to finish 2ND in the NSIC.
Not that it's about the final score anyway in exhibition games,it's about getting both teams prepared for their respective seasons.

I sure hope they don't take away Gabby's quick handed steals by these new rules,to me, she gets them cleanly.May I ask if you were at the game. Was it non-stop whistles, more than usual?

1083 in attendance today. It is good to have the season underway. I would expect larger crowds for the double header on Friday.

One of her fouls was during a steal. That may have been called earlier. It was an opportunity to look at another PG. I do not think Gabby had 4 fouls.

I was at the game and it was not that noticable that more calls were made. We did start the 2nd half with some quick fouls called.
Also wanted to add that Clarin had a better touch around the basket. She was real smooth on her first 6 points with nice touch on her shots off the glass. I agree on the Freshman too, very impressive.

How soon we forget. Of course, some of y'all young whippersnappers weren't around during the NCC days, were all y'all? (Grumbles about lawns, youths removing themselves therefrom, etc., etc.)
