Starting off with a 15 seed makes that hard to do.Go Jacks!!
I agree. Yeah its great to make the tournament. However, it is getting old showing up and getting the tar knocked out of us. Maybe I was just spoiled with the results experienced in the transition and then our first year of eligibility. It feels almost like we have taken a step back in terms of talent, but I also realize that we are probably playing stiffer competition on a more consistent basis. I don't know, it just drives me a bit crazy how we don't play great in OOC then seem to heat up in conference play, then struggle in the tourny, and then get killed in the big dance.

In terms of the offense I really think we have been unable to find a steady point guard who could run the up tempo consistently since Andrea Verdigan(sp?) graduated. I think this will make a world of difference. I'm guessing Boever and Corneman as they gain experience will hopefully reach this level. Having a true point well help cure some of our offensive woes.

Hey guys, c'mon...we're definitely young compared to most of our recent teams: Starting Gabby, a sophomore, and subbing a freshman (Chloe) at point guard during the game, starting sophomores Mariah Clarin and Megan Waytashek as well. Subbing two other sophomores in Megan Stuart and Rachel Walters. So far, at least, we haven't seen a "go-to" player from our upperclass players. Ashley has been having a bit of a problem in getting going, and while Leah is a great defender, she isn't a scoring machine. Katie does well at defending as well, and gets some points from her time on the floor. Hannah Strop has been sick recently and hasn't seem much time.

And we have played Villanova, Washington State and Creighton in our first three games. Creighton is picked to win the Missouri Valley. Having said all of that, I'm a little concerned about how long it is going to take this year's team to get it together...especially adding in the Nebraska visit Sunday. But having just talked about the relative youth of this program, I guess it is a team that could be expect to blow hot and cold at this stage. I do get depressed some over our inability to handle the press, but trust the coaches to work hard to get that squared away.

It sure must of been ugly last night. I wasn't able to go nor listen to the game.

Westside, I agree with a lot you said but I also disagree with some of it. Not that it is wrong but just an unrealistic expectation and you even mentioned that. So this isn't in response to you but more in general.

WE HAVE BEEN SPOILED! The WBB has really set a shining example for themselves, SDSU, and even the State of South Dakota. When they made it to the tourney for the first time, and then won a game they showed everyone that a team from here sure can compete at the highest level. Then they have gone on and done it three more times. The only school EVER to make the NCAA Tournament in their first three and now four years of eligibility. They've had the highest or in the top 2 or 3 in GPA. I believe that the WBB has helped other teams at SDSU by showing them that it can be done.

Again, Westside, I'm not saying this to slam or chastise you in any way. More to say that we all need to take a step back and more appreciate what has happened. You bet it has been exciting! We all want to get to the dance and win games. We want to see the team continue to move forward. It's exciting that we have such high expectations no matter how unrealistic they may be. This team has set the bar that high for themselves. It's great for everyone involved.

I think this year is going to be AJ's biggest challenge as a coach. He has to replace two of the best players in SDSU history, has a rebuilt coaching staff, and a bunch of very talented but inexperienced players some of whom are coming back from major injury. It's going to take some time for this bunch to put all of the pieces together. Last year it took us off guard how they started so slow. This year it is easier to see (although it is just a couple of games in) and should be expected to a degree. This may be one of his most talented teams physically but there are some big shoes to fill. Boever and Waytashek seem to be finally healthy and to a point where they can be real factors and just need gametime experience. Clarin appears to really be ready to make an impact. The team will develop its own personality and become stronger as the team goes. There will no doubt be some growing pains.

I'm looking forward to seeing how things play out and am really interested to see how AJ pulls things together. Obviously he's had some great teams and they've always had a "star" player or two. That player isn't defined heading into the year. Eide and Waytashek may develop into it but aren't there as of yet. I also think that there is a chance that this team could end up being stronger because of the lack of that premier player. Everyone has to do their job to be succesdul. One player isn't going to carry them. If they do that they will be really tough to beat.

        Time will tell!

        GB, GB, GJ!

I thought we made progress with the OT victory with Wash St during the Best Buy Classic. What do we do the very next game, open wild and play "sloppy" and give a very good Creighton team a nice little "cushion" to play with through out the game, which forced us to play from behind all game long, something we don't do well. It's very frustrating watching the ups and downs, similar to riding a roller coaster.

All the frustration and much of the negativity will begin to disappear and we will be singing praises to the team when we start to see some progress either in victories or good performances against the best of the competition.

One thing makes me wonder,at the Summit tournament,we hit some big clutch three's,now we can't even hit the rim?Terrible "off" season or what?
Sure wish Steph Paluch was ready to go,she would help, but,it's just a game and healing her injury is much more important, and we can look forward to watching her play next year if she redshirts this year.

The sky is not falling. This was only the third game.
This team will develop as the year goes on like teams of the past few years.

Yea,but we can still have fun critiquing the team,as long as we do it in a constuctive manner ,and mindful of people's feelings and with the goal of becomming obnoxious, blow hard fans can't we?

                  Re: Creighton gdt

Just my .02 (and yes it became a book sorry) I think more than maybe any team in the past, this Jackrabbits Women's Team is searching for it's identity. I have a feeling that we are going to see a lot of ups and downs during the OOC based on the level of competition scheduled. Our OOC I would be confident in saying is going to be one of the toughest of anybody in the country.

We have been VERY spoiled in past years that we have always had one (if not several) 1000 point scorers coming back and guaranteed leadership on the floor. This year, I knew coming into it that leadership was not there. Not because it won't be by the end of the season, but because of the returning players, none of them had developed that role yet.

Based on what I have seen in three Games, the talent we have on the floor is as good, or better, than what we have had in the past and that is saying A LOT.

                  Breakdown the team.

Ashley Eide – I really like Ashley’s game, but for some reason I just don’t see her being the answer at court leader. Maybe because I feel she is prone to getting out of control. However, I do love the spark she brings to our team. As the season goes on I think she is going to be a stud, don’t get me wrong, but I think her role needs to be more as that player you never want to forget about because she can personally take over a game. I guess I think she is trying to force it to much right now and that will go away once everyone else gets comfortable on the floor.

Mariah Clarin – The amount of improvement Mariah has shown in the first three games makes me very confident in saying she is going to be one of the best by the time she graduates. She is just very raw on the floor right now. The more the season goes on, the more playing time she sees, the stronger she will be. You can already see the difference just three games in.

Gabby is going to be a great leader running the floor for us and I honestly think that by conference season, roles around she and Chloe (who is also getting more confident and getting better) are going to be very solid for us at point. I am excited about this duo as looking forward we have two TRUE point guards on the team which is going to let our other shooting guards play their natural position. A situation we haven’t had for a while. (Even when we did have Macy, we didn’t have another back up for her.)

Megan W. is going to be the team leader on and off the court as she is starting to take that role now. I LOVE what I am seeing from her. For someone who has not played for more than two years consistently, she has been outstanding already and is only going to get better. I am so excited to see what she can do on the floor.

Katie Lingle and Leah Dietel to me are both very good role players. In my mind, they have both gotten so used to playing behind great posts that I don’t think either one has developed into their own scoring threat and based on who else we have on the floor this season I really don’t see it happening this year. I think Katie has the potential to take the team on her back and really be strong at the basket, but she hasn’t developed consistency in that role. I think of all the players on the court she is the one I had most hoped would step up this season and be the team leader, but I don’t think she has, YET, based on what I have seen so far.

Tara Heiser and Megan Stuart are going to be great for us coming off the bench.

The two things I have been questioning so far this season are why are Rachel Walters and Hannah Strop not getting playing time? Hannah has been very good for us in the past two seasons. I know she was sick earlier this month is that lingering? And I really REALLY think we need Walters three point threat on the floor. So I wonder if she is fighting and injury or something? It is looking like Steph will redshirt?

Basically after writing my book I think it all is going to come down to when this team gels they are going to be VERY good. Unfortunately, it is going to take some time as everyone is trying to figure out their role on the floor. I will say this, the players we have are all very good, we are, just in terms of an SDSU women’s bball team, very young and almost rebuilding, sort of.

I have no doubt they will get it. And looking forward, the core group of this team is going to be together for three years, if that doesn’t make you excited thinking about the possibilities nothing will.

                    Re: Creighton gdt

Just looked at the box score for the game,to my surprise,we actually shot better from behind the arc than Creighton did,41.7% to 36.8%
Out-rebounded them 35-30,with 10 offensive rebounds compared to their 8. Turnovers and over-all shooting percentage was our weakness.
Creighton had seven more steals, 15 to 8,part of our turnover problem. At least there are some positives from this game.

Megan Waytashek gets my" MVP miss efficiency" with 6-9 FG , 2-3 3pt FG and 14 pts.Five TO's though, that might be from bad pass from someone who threw it in when she had too many people gaurding her and she tried to force it up anyway, losing the ball.Stats can be deceiving sometimes.

Like the last several years, I think we are going to get frustrated with what feels like too many OOC losses and then see the team stabilize/dominate during the conference season. Odds are very good that they will give us something to cheer about in Sioux Falls. If they come out on top in the tourney yet again, we can't be surprised about getting a 14-16 seed (unless they suddenly start winning a lot more of these tough OOC games).

Those first two (DI) teams set our standards very high on a national level. It's hard to be satisfied with "just" winning the Summit Tourney even though the regularity with with the ladies are doing it is unprecendented. Spoiled? Indeed!

I think a 14-16 seed is about the best a Summit team can expect. The 08/09 dream season team only lost two games going into the Big Dance, beat 6 BCS schools , was nationally ranked and only got a 13 (which should have been higher).

No applicable thread,so will put here, pertains to turn overs.I was looking at the scores of Summit League teams,as I looked at the box score of the St. Louis vs UMKC game, the FG shooting statistic caught my eye,UMKC won despite St. Louis shooting 55% to UMKC's 37.3%.Then i looked at turnovers, yep,St Louis had 23 turnovers and UMKC had 7.Turnovers are a killer.Maybe we should clean that up before we get into conference games....just say'n, i know we're playing better competition, maybe this is why we are.
