How do you become an ex-SDSU grad? Did they take away his degree?

I haven't heard or read exactly what Steph's injury was. Anybody?
When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important than the name on the back.

I haven't seen official word, and they may be waiting for an MRI when swelling goes down, but on Twitter after it happened word was ACL tear, plus possibly MCL also. TV said on one of his chats that people right there at the end of the court when it happened supposedly heard it snap.

I talked to Steph's mom on Tuesday, and she said while their family is disappointed to have it happen, she is going to heal and be OK. I didn't ask if it had been officially diagnosed yet. Love her mom by the way, just a great gal.

I'm still amazed that she was able to make that shot, considering that the actual injury obviously happend on the previous stride. Very impressive, and a big loss to the team. I hope she is ready to go next year.

It would be interesting to talk with an orthopedic specialist and find out how these tears happen. I was at the game where Gabby injured her knee, and just as in Steph's case,it happened on an innocent enough looking play, that didn't look to put any unusual stress on the knee and with no contact from any other player. Kind of makes you wonder if the ligament gradually tears over a period of time, and finally snaps on a normal looking play.

                How does the injury happen?
There are several ways noncontact ACL injuries occur, including stopping quickly, cutting sharply, and landing and changing direction with both feet planted. Most commonly in court sports, such as basketball, a pop is felt. This pop also refers to the way the athlete lands with both feet planted and out of control and feels a pop. It usually signals that the ACL is torn completely.

Lots of research on this and it seems to be the consensus that these injuries occur 2.5 times more frequently in female athletes. From this New York Times article http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/27/sp...pagewanted=all from last year:

"A number of possible risk factors have been identified in women: wider hips; ligament laxity at certain stages of the menstrual cycle; the smaller size of the notch through which the ligament connects to the femur in the upper leg; a tendency to land straight-legged and knock-kneed; core instability; a greater imbalance than men in the comparative strength of the hamstring to the quadriceps, or thigh muscle."

This is a hot research topic in the sports medicine field (non-contact ACL injuries) for quite some time now. The group I work with have begun to look at injury risk assessments looking at this issue w/ BBall players.

Also it has to do with just how the joints are designed. Knees are not designed to support stress from directional force. They are designed for movement in a linear motion. I am actuatally surprised there are not more injuries in sports. Take for instant triple jump. The amount of force the joint and ligiments in a knee go through is amazing they can actually so something like that.

with all the hundreds of pounds of pressure on the achilles tendon its a wonder there aren't more of those type injuries also.

not to mention, amazing how far research and repair has come. though, it is true some never do completely recover---for one reason or another.

i had two buddies that had knee surgery done in sioux falls back in the 70's---one while in hs, and the other in college. the knee they had surgery on wasn't worth a crap after that.

i'm sure someone could comment on this---but, isn't it true when you pop your acl and have other ligament damage, it is much, much harder to come back from something as traumatic to the knee as that? that just seems like common sense. if you just pop your acl, with no other damage, much easier to come back?

good luck to ms paluch---hope to see her back on the court.
