  • OT: story on gopher women's bb fade...

just thought with sdsu's close recruiting relationship with players from minnesota, some of you might find this an interesting read.

doesn't sound like borton will be leaving after this year---her buyout would be over $1 million. with the economic situation, i would think odds are very high they wouldn't pay that kind of money.

there was also mention of minnesota (the state) having one of their better hs sophomore recruiting classes. maybe AJ can pull a couple out of there?!?

reason i posted this was because of the past "chatter" from a few that this may be one position AJ may have interest in.

After today's victory, we should appreciate the job AJ has done and enjoy it while it lasts. Only AJ knows the answer, but I am confident he is high on the U's list should they decide to pull the trigger. The buyout may be less of a concern if they could get AJ for less than some other prominent assistants.
3 Titles in row...his name must be red hot in coaching circles right now.

This came up in discussion while in line to get into the arena today.

It's not like AJ is going to coach SDSU forever, I'm sure he'll move to the next level someday...whether the UofM is the next level.....debatable.

It'll be a bummer to see him leave someday.

i'm sure "they" will do all the can to keep him. no doubt about that.

one of the big questions is, given their situation, can they afford to hire a coach with no experience at that level? could be easily wrong, but, i really doubt it. i think minny would want someone that's going to "energize" their fan base immediately. i'm not sure AJ is the one that could do that. not saying he wouldn't do well at that level at all---just that i'm not sure minny is in a position with women's bb to make this kind of hire.

imo, i still think borton will be there for at least 1 more year (more of a financial decision)---although, seems like i read she has a couple of pretty good recruits coming in---so, they may want to give her a bit more time.

jackrabbit fans love AJ---i sure would like to see him stay a jackrabbit.

If the school is going to keep coaches around the programs it is going to be up to the boosters to supplement their incomes since there is no way that the state is going to be able to ante up the type of money that they will be asking.

This is why maybe multi-year contracts aren't as great as some would argue.....huge pay outs to coaches not working out.Sometimes , they would feel trapped in a place they'd rather not be, etc. Love AJ as a coach here at SDSU ,and I think he likes it here too,and I hope he stays here forever, but if & when, or ever, he decides he might want something different, at least he 's free to choose here.

Re: OT: story on gopher women's bb fade...

I am guessing that since AJ and Laurie are starting a family, that her desire may be limited for going back to coaching in the future. So,the position she currently has is a good tie to SDSU. And they seem to be the type of couple that would want to raise their kids in a community like Brookings. Now I realize that money talks, but there are a lot of quality of life bonuses (and being close to family) that will hopefully keep them here.

Luckily Laurie is from Rapid City. It has to help at least a little bit that she has ties to SD to keep them here.

I still think that relationship between those two had something to do with AJ not leaving SDSU the first time. It doesn't matter either way but woman can make a man do some crazy things.

True on all accounts. But let's not forget, when AJ looked east last time Laurie could not go with as an assistant because she does not have an advanced degree. Now, she's not coaching so that's not an issue. Just saying to say.

I hope he doesn't leave. Money isn't everything and I would imagine he's pretty financially set should he stay in Brookings for a long time. When coaches at SDSU's level move "up" to a school like Minnesota it doesn't always translate into success (see Dan Monson from Gonzaga to Minnesota). AJ has a nice niche and he'll recruit quality athletes and one of these years will make a run deep into the NCAA's. Problem will be, no matter where he's coaching, is for years to come WBB has to contend with the elite programs (UConn, Tennessee, Stanford, etc.) and that makes the likelyhood of pulling off a Cinderella run to a title less likely than on the men's side (i.e. Butler falling just short last year).

But a program like the goophers will in the right hands be able to compete in the top 10 in the country. there is a lot of talent around here and a good recruiter, which AJ is, at the right place could be able to compete. I hope he decided to stay as long as possible, but he might have a little bit of the "what if" problem, what if he had the chance and never went, what could have been a oppertunity of a life time, or on the flip side, what if he doesnt want to leave because he doesnt want to lose the great things that have happened here and what can continue to happen. 3 years in 3 chances with 3 straight trips to the NCAA tourny. maybe get back to our level 2 years ago every now and then to make a run past the first round or two and that could be a hard gig to give up. AJ has shown with his recruits at a mid major can beat major power confrence teams, what if he was at a major confrence and competed at that level. would hate to be those other teams.

We need to add $1per ticket and pay the coaches directly for butts in the seats...
