Jacks picked to finish third in the Summit

The Golden Eagles, who were last year’s regular-season and tournament champions, garnered three first-place votes en route to 56 points. The other two new schools in the league, South Dakota State and North Dakota State, came in third and fourth in the preseason voting with 54 and 44 points, respectively. The Jackrabbits also received three first-place votes. Western Illinois came in fifth with 37 points, followed by IUPUI with 30 tallies. Rounding out the poll are UMKC (21), Oakland (16) and Centenary (8).

Preseason Summit polls? Rating new members difficult

As if the validity of preseason polls wasn't already questionable. What kind of accuracy can be expected when 30 percent of the participants are new to the league?

The Summit League released its annual volleyball poll on Wednesday, the first preseason prediction to be released since South Dakota State, North Dakota State and Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne officially gained entry on July 1. The women's soccer poll will come out today, followed next week by men's and women's cross country.

The volleyball results, based on coaches votes, project not so much unfamiliarity with the newcomers, but respect for them.
IPFW, SDSU and NDSU were picked first, third and fourth, respectively. Both the Mastodons and the Jackrabbits received as many first-place votes (three) as defending conference regular season and tournament champion Oral Roberts - tabbed to finish second in the nine-team field. (Southern Utah won't field a squad until 2009.)

In other words, the Summit League hasn't gotten tougher to pick because of the additions, it's gotten tougher, period. . . . (read more)
