  • Omaha weekend

The girls have a very big series this weekend. Fri/Sat DH. They have been able to beat the teams they should and split with the better teams. ST. Thomas isn't eligible for the tourney whom they went 1-2 with. I am guessing this series will give us a good gauge to see if we have a chance. It's been a little tough with mostly all underclassmen pitchers. But Shromoff and Baker look very promising to me, both freshmen. The only upperclassman is Madi M and she has been up and down. Abby Gentry is leading the league in RBI. Should be fun!

we are tied in the loss column with both UNO and UST
UST has the H2H tie breaker vs both teams

UST has the bottom two teams in the league for the final two weekends. you decide what word you put on that? unlikely they lose one? this is the final weekend of league play for UNO

the Jacks and UNO are playing for the 1 seed in the SLT. if one of us can go unbeaten the rest of the way and UST loses once or more, that team would also be the league champ and be the host for the SLT next year

the Jacks are probably not the favorite to win either POY award (pitcher or player), but a big weekend could possibly change that. Dumont and Gentry have been the backbone of the offense much to all of the year. some other players have been up and down, some probably due to injury, but I have never seen anything official

Dumont has been hot all year. OOC she was on fire. teams mostly stopped pitching to her and dared others to beat them. that slowed Brooke down a bit, but she has taken her walks all year, and she is second in the league in BBs

Gentry has also been hot all year and she has stepped up and taken advantage of teams pitching around Brooke a bit

Mia has had a very good year, except when you compare it to her insane year a year ago. she had an excellent series last weekend hopefully she can keep rolling thru the rest of league play and the postseason!!

Vike has had a good year in her first year as a starter. she seems to be playing her best right now hopefully she continues the ascent

Christensen and Vacanti have both been a key part of the lineup at some point, but also missed time (I assume from injuries??), hopefully they will be full strength and find the mojo to end the season at their best

again, no official word, but it does seem that Barnard has been a bit dinged up. she has managed to mostly stay in the lineup and is third in HR and first in 3bs

Boyle has had a good year hitting for average but little power. if she can keep getting on base, that keeps the lineup moving

there have been lots of contributions over the course of the year. this will be a good time for the girls to play their best 3 games so far!!

Defense has been solid I assume, making teams earn their runs, generally speaking?

if you are asking a question, and based on the question mark, I am guessing you are-
from what I have seen or been able to gather from box scores, this is not quite as good as recent league leading defenses, but they have not been notably bad.

the biggest issue has been too many walks from our pitchers and the inability to erase the walks with Ks. for the last handful of years we had TK who was a good bet to get at least 10 Ks almost any time she took the circle, and we had Grace and Shannon L who were also both capable of racking good K numbers. I would have to look for sure, but I am almost positive we have not had a single pitcher get to 10 Ks in a game all season. more than that, I would say we have not had more than a few games where our pitchers have even combined for 10 Ks

I have personally watched more than a few games where we have multiple walks in multiple innings. TK could get away with that because she could get outs without the ball getting put in play. when you MUST get contact to get an out. there is always danger that some balls are going to have eyeballs even if they are not hit hard. those seeing eye bloopers and grounders are harmless when the bases are empty. when you walk batters to second base, those weakly hit balls become much more dangerous

I remember you mentioning the walks earlier being problematic now that I think of it, hopefully we get that under control some and can out slug the opposition to lessen the effect of that. Thanks for the excellent summation of the season, I haven't been following the season as closely as I should have.

we really have not played very well all weekend but we had a GOOD chance to win each of the first two games. even after giving away the first game, we still had a shot to win the series and nearly lock up the top seed for the SLT by winning the rubber game

but 7 or 8 BBs, 3 HBP, and a HUGE error on a near guaranteed GIDP ball and we find ourselves behind 7-0 going to the bottom of 5

we have either the top 2 or 2 of the top 3 hitters in the league. we have some other good hitters, but we do not consistently do the little things correctly. we are good but we have kinda stopped being special. UNO has a group of sophomores that looks a lot like our group of Seniors from last year

we will need to lift our play up a notch or two, at least, if we want to stop UNO from winning their 3rd consecutive SLT on our field. after this year, it very much appears that we could be consistently looking up at UST and UNO

I wish I could have been there in person to watch the series, I listened to most every inning. It didn't go our way but it was most certainly entertaining every game. The first game they had their chances, but good teams make good plays. I think there is a lot of potential in Srhomov. Baker did her job in game two and looks to be promising as well. I do think coach did wrong with leaving Barnard in as long as she did. It wasn't like she was missing the strike zone by a couple inches. When you take the bill off of a batters hat so to speak, control is a issue. But she is the hardest thrower according to Tyler. IDK. Either way, they proved they can play with them, 34-10 isn't too shabby when it comes to Omaha's record. Outside of Maddia Groff we win that series. But, we have to beat her in the tourney most likely. JMO, as a casual fan!

I did not feel like starting a new thread

I have been wrestling with myself all day. I dont like the things I am thinking. I think the frustration was evident in my comments during the UNO series a couple weeks ago. frustration continued yesterday in the first USD game
                  and continued all weekend long

i dont want to say a lot but the program is moving in the wrong direction. should we expect to win the league and the SLT every year? of course not!!
but we used to be excellent defensively. now we are solid but we are NOT excellent. UNO took away BIG runs from us in at least 2 of the 4 games we played them. we gave them extra outs and we give up extra outs in far more games than not

runs are given away on both sides of the ball both fundamentally and strategically. that has been tolerated for 3 years now

I have nothing but respect and appreciation for the girls! that is really the heart of the frustration. it makes me sad that in the last 2 years we have seen so many ALL TIME great players end their careers without seeing them play to the absolute best of their ability and without them getting the best possible chance to go to the ncaa tourney

BIG THANK YOU to Brooke, Mia, and Alli for spending 4 years here and everything they did for the program!! Thank you to all the seniors and all the best going forward. I loved watching you all play and I am sad to have your careers end today!!!! THANK YOU AGAIN!!!!!
