Jacks fall to #15 Oregon State and Portland State out west
PORTLAND, Ore. – South Dakota State dropped its first two games at the Cascade Clash Friday in Portland, Oregon, but did so against some stiff competition. The Jackrabbits opened the day with a 5-2 loss to #15 Oregon State and capped the day with a 1-0 loss to Portland State.
SDSU met 2006 Women’s College World Series qualifier Oregon State in the first game of the day and quickly fell behind 2-0 after one inning when the Beavers turned a single, a sacrifice bunt and a pair of doubles into a pair of runs.
OSU increased its lead to 4-0 in the fifth, when Brianne McGowan smacked a two-run home run over the left field fence.
The Jacks started to get things going in the bottom of the fifth, when Denise Leon reached with a one-out walk. Maggie Eilers came on to run for Leon and gained second base on an Amanda Fedson single.
Brooke Postma advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt, and Samantha Heinzman drove them home with a two-out double to center field that got the Jacks back within two runs at 4-2.
They didn’t end up needing it, but the Beavers tacked on one more run in the sixth to secure the 5-2 win.
Jenna Marston pitched all seven innings and took the loss for the Jacks, who fell to 9-8. Marston gave up nine hits, five runs, – all earned – struck out one and walked two.
Heinzman led the Jacks on the offensive side of the ball. She went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double and two RBI.
Box Score vs. Oregon St.
The second game of day featured the Jackrabbits’ Kim Westendorf against the Vikings’ Mandy Hill in a classic pitcher’s duel that went down to the wire
Westendorf pitched a complete game four hitter, she struck out five and walked three, but Hill got the only run support of the day, and she gave it to herself, with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth to give Portland State the only run it needed.
Hill also pitched a complete game, but struck out six and walked none.
The Jacks fall back to an even 9-9 on the season, but can get their revenge on Saturday, when they face the same two teams again, this time in Corvallis, Oregon.
The Jackrabbits and Beavers start at 9 a.m. PT (11 a.m. CT) and the Jacks and Vikings square off at 1 p.m. ET.Tags: None
