    I had heard some rumblings a long time ago (maybe last summer?) from some fans about Bouman's coaching style being an issue, but nothing more than over-a-beer type talk.

    I would have to agree that the on field performance of the softball team is less than good. I don't follow softball that close, but from what I remember the Jacks weren't competitive in the DII days and things haven't improved since moving to DI. In my opinion a coach needs to show improvement and I don't believe that had happened.

      I not sure he was given the necessary resources to be successful. I talked to a couple of students and they said he was well liked by the team and the team took the firing very hard. Hopefully, SDSU softball will learn to thrive in Division I.

        Heelan senior adds stability
        By Steven Allspach Journal sports writer

        At home or on the playing field Dana Wilson is capable of cooking up a storm.

        In softball, the Bishop Heelan senior is hitting at a torrid .484 pace, leading the Crusaders in that department and in runs batted in.

        The Journal's Metro Athlete of the Week has also swatted two home runs and a pair of triples.

        In four games last week the 5-7 daughter of Kim and Tim Wilson collected five hits in 12 at-bats, bashing a solo home run and RBI double in a win over West.

        "I can also whip up a pretty tasty chicken alfredo,'' laughs Dana, who will play softball collegiately at Division I South Dakota State, where she plans to major in hotel business management. "Managing all phases of a hotel operation, including the restaurant part, is intriguing to me.''

        Right now, Wilson is creating intrigue for a youthful Heelan softball team that evened its record at 5-5 with a 5-1 Missouri River Activities Conference victory over Council Bluffs Thomas Jefferson Tuesday night.

        "Our team is relying on me to drive in runs and to be a solid centerfielder,'' says Wilson, also a dependable libero/defensive specialist on the Crusader volleyball team that defeated West Delaware in a spine-tingling five-game duel in the finals last fall to win the Class 3A state championship.

        Passing was her forte in volleyball, averaging 2.79 digs per game to lead the Crusaders. She was also second on the team in ace serves with 32 and second in serve percentage (.925) going into the state tournament.

        The decision as to which sport to pursue at the college level was a difficult one for the 18-year-old.

        "I love both sports, but it seemed like I might be able to go a little further in softball,'' said Wilson. "I won't be on scholarship at South Dakota State, but my goal is to work hard and show the coaches I deserve a scholarship.

        "Officially I'll be a walk-on, but I plan to change that. It'll be a challenge, but I'm looking forward to softball at that level.'' . . . (read more)

          Well, SDSU had a run of respectability, but it has never been a power house and had many # of years of less than competitve against DII. They have had a problem keeping coaches, and providing stability to that program. I wish they could have kept him at least 1 more year. Thye seemed to have a overall better competitive season this year. I think that a program like this was going to find it very difficult to go thru the transition given the history and lack of consistency.

              I spoke to one of Shane's family members a couple of weeks ago and they said Shane was contacted by the University of Iowa about being an assistant coach.  Apparently he's received interest from Northern Iowa also.

              You really can't judge Shane completley on his record considering he received pratically zero support from the administration during his tenure.

                I'm not judging, simply reporting facts.  I will note for the record that Shane does have the most wins as a head coach in SDSU history. Of course he also has the most losses and was in his position longer then any other head coach. Again I am not making any sort of judgment as I am not close enough to this program to really have an opinion. Just posting facts to aid in the discussion.

                  Sorry 89, I didn't mean my post to sound like a retaliation to yours. I more or less was just stating that Shane's received some interest from other schools despite not having the greatest record over his time with SDSU.

                      Well I dont doubt that he will be snapped up. His exp. as a talented player (of his day) along with his recent coaching exp will be an asset to many teams.

                          I'd have to agree...a very bold post. Especially considering the scholarship increases to the softball program the last few years. Not to mention the new softball complex that went up recently. Granted it hasn't been completed yet but it is sure better than nothing!

                            Again just for the sake of discussion, here are is the Scholarship Schedule

                            Softball

                            DI max = 12

                            FY05 = 5.5
                            FY06 = 6.0
                            FY07 = 10.0 (this is the season that just happened)
                            FY08 = 12 (next year we will be at the D-I max)

                              We signed a girl from Sioux City?? Who does the recruiting or how does that happen without a coach? Or since Bouman is still technically working until July 31st (I'm pretty positive), he can take some contacts that he knows and still do the minimal recruiting just to keep the program afloat? Anyone have any answers??
