  • Student Section

I am wondering if anyone here could put me in touch with a current student from the student section, perhaps a leader or executive board member. I searched both the school's website and the athletics site for this info, but came up short. I am attempting to get reports from each Summit League school about their student sections for basketball games for a series of articles for my website. I would really appreciate any help. PM me if you are interested.

I had a couple of people show interest but no replies to my questions thus far. Would still really like to have someone from SDSU represent for this series. If you want to see an example, I just recently posted one from North Dakota State here. Please PM me or respond.

I think there's only a handful of students that come to this board. And I don't know that any of them head up the student section--in fact, I don't even know if there really is much organization to the student section at all.

You'd think a program that made 8 D-2 tournament appearances and won 4 titles in 9 years ('95-'03) would have a 'real' student section and tradition and whatnot, but that's not the case.

If you want material about SDSU, I'd suggest pulling AJ's quotes about fans from the '09 Summit tournament. I've always thought this a pretty good summary of the relationship between SDSU's players and fans:

      AJ in '09:
“In the second half, our players played well and the crowd feeds off of them. Then the players fed off the crowd. It’s definitely a partnership with the fans, but it’s usually a partnership that starts with the players.”

“We talk about what a special place Frost (Arena) is. But Frost is a building. Frost is a special place because of the people that come to that building to watch teams play. Fans come out to watch basketball, but a lot of people come out to watch these great women compete and what they’ve done for SDSU.”

“There’s a certain relationship that our fans, our staff, our university have with the players. We talked in the locker room that we’re fighting for South Dakota, we’re fighting for the people that are here fighting for us. To have the feeling and have players that respect that idea, embrace that idea means an awful lot. The calmness you see with our team is the fact that they are very humble. The fact they don’t wear their emotions on their sleeve because they’re not trying to show anybody up. They’re trying to think about the bigger picture and that’s a unique quality.”

SDSU fans, as a whole, don't have the 'swagger' that NDSU fans seem to. While it's hardly representative of the fanbase as a whole, it is telling that you will have NDSU fans, year in and year out, suggesting NDSU's relevance on a larger stage (e.g. demanding that a recruiting class be recognized nationally, or that NDSU should go BCS and join the WAC, or some such). SDSU fans tend, on the whole to be much lower key.

Terry Vandrovec, the Sioux Falls based beat writer for the Jacks summed up the difference between Fargo and Sioux Falls by saying, 'People in Fargo think it's better than it really is, people in Sioux Falls think it's worse,' and the same thing could be applied, in general, to NDSU and SDSU fans.

What I'm saying, in short, is that your typical SDSU fan isn't big on drawing attention to himself as a fan.

The difference between SDSU fans and NDSU fans:

SDSU booster club: The Jackrabbit Club

        NDSU booster club: Teammakers

One suggests a mission, the other doesn't.

I answered some of his questions the best I could.

Also, Hoopsdude, I said I'd send you the pictures of Frost filled, but I'll just put them here.

Both of those pictures show how full/awesome Frost can get.

Nice article Hoopsdude18 and thanks for being the spokesperson for SDSU Tony (Rabbit Observer?).

Just a few comments on the Jacks FanAddict group, it is still active, though I can see how some might be confused about it. The group is sponsored by Cubby's and it is for SDSU students only, and to become a member all a student has to do is pay $5, fill out a short form, and then they would receive a Jacks FanAddict T-shirt. If any of you saw a table with a crap ton of T-Shirts on it at Jackrabbit events, that was where students could sign up and receive their T-shirt (there was also a table setup at the Student Union at times throughout the basketball season).

With membership, the student gets a Jacks FanAddict T-Shirt which makes them eligible for the Cubby's FanAddict of the game contest (It was the contest that generally took place around the 8 minute media timeout in the second half in which a student would either shoot 1 free throw, or shoot multiple free throws against another FanAddict to see who made the most in thirty seconds, and the winner would receive a Cubby's gift certificate worth $25), though there were many times this year someone not wearing a Jacks FanAddict T-Shirt participated due to lack of people wearing them or the ones wearing them did not want to participate in the contest (amazing how many people fear being in front of people). Also, a Jacks FanAddict member received emails about special offers at Cubby's, and if the member wore their Jacks FanAddict T-shirt to Cubby's they could receive discounts on certain items.

Hope that clears up any questions up about the group.

Yes, it was me. Hopefully I did a decent job of answering, I've only been around for 2 years.

And thank you, I feel like I should have known that stuff already.

Rabbit, you definitely did a fine job. Got what we were looking for.

As for the FanAddict info from Kemo, I went ahead an posted much of what you just wrote in an updated version of that question for the post. Hopefully that is okay with you, let me know either way. I think it nicely completes that question now. Thanks for the update.
