Coach did a nice job, he looked cool (no make up). 8) Kentucky looks a little slow. The Wildcats are shooting the ball well but not getting off many shots. They were up by 8 at half in a low scoring game.
A win is a win is a win is a win! And over UNC it is very sweet. Let's face it, UNC went transition one year earlier for picking up recruits. They have gone the Junior College route for quick improvement but long-range implications. They will have a number of two-year in the program seniors, and had only two true freshmen on this year's team.
On the other hand, Coaches Nagy and Larson believe on getting the right athletes out of high school and bring them along in their program. I like that approach. The price you pay is a young and inconsistent team.
Just a couple of remarks about tonight. The UK students came early and continued to boo Holdren every time he touched the ball. He made them pay for it! Three beautiful threes and lots of good drives -- 19 points total. Beran was the defensive target of UNC (rightly so after they watched last night) and they were all over him, physically. He did alright under those circumstances. He did miss some layups as did Loney, but he was under a lot of pressure.
And just a note on last night. We made 1 of our first 17 shots. Was it super-oxygenated adrenalin pumping, nervousness, awe or whatever -- we just couldn't get it in the hole. I can tell you that if we had made 5 or 6 more of those first 17 (33%), we would have given them a run for their money.
That's about it from Rupp Arena -- gotta get to bed to catch a 7 a.m. flight back to snow country!
LEXINGTON, KY - Redshirt freshman Matt Cadwell didn’t have a field goal, but hit 11 free throws including four in the closing 28 seconds as South Dakota State held on to defeat Northern Colorado 61-59 in the third place game at the Guardians Classic regional at Lexington.
Cadwell’s two free throws with 11 seconds left gave SDSU a 60-56 cushion, something they needed when Sean Taibi hit a three-pointer for UNC. Cadwell was fouled again, and made 1-of-2 at the line with two seconds left. Matt Kline’s three-point attempt at the buzzer missed.
Like opening night against Kentucky, when the Jacks missed 16 of their first 17 shots from the field, SDSU got off to a slow start again, this time falling behind 8-2 before going on an 11-0 run. Matt Cadwell hit a pair of free throws for SDSU’s first points at 14:54 to play, then Steve Holdren flushed a trio of three-point shots to key a rally which put SDSU ahead 13-8.
UNC came back and reclaimed the lead at 18-16 on a layup by Michael Gordy. UNC had its last lead of the half at 24-23 before Andre Gilbert hit four free throws and a layup while Mackenzie Casey hit a drive and the Jacks opened a 31-24 lead. Ben Beran’s shot at the buzzer made it 35-26 at halftime.
A three-point basket by Andy Kleinjan and a basket by Gilbert gave the Jacks a 42-30 lead before UNC rallied with a five point run to close within 42-35. A basket by Holdren off a feed from Beran momentarily ended the UNC run, but the Bears kept coming. When Erik Olson scored on a tip-in the game was tied at 46.
Olson picked up his fourth foul, sending Holdren to the foul line and he hit one so when Dwayne Birden hit a jumper, UNC was up 48-47. A free throw by Cadwell tied it at 48 with 9:06 to play. The teams traded possessions for three minutes until Matt Kline hit a jumper to give UNC a 50-48 lead, but Beran tied with a basket for the Jacks.
Gordy put UNC back in the lead with two free throws but Holdren scored on a drive to tie it again. Then Beran got a layup on a breakaway after a UNC miss and SDSU was on top 54-52. The Jacks led the rest of the way.
Holdren, who did not start, led the Jacks with 19 points, hitting 6-of-10 field goal attempts. Cadwell added 11 and Ben Beran 10. Michael Loney, who started at the post, had three points but led the Jacks in rebounds with nine before fouling out. Beran and Mohamed Berte had seven rebounds each.
SDSU shot 33 per cent from the field (16x48) while UNC had eight more field goals than SDSU and shot 36 per cent (24x66) . The Bears counted 21 offensive rebounds in their 42-39 advantage on the boards. UNC had 25 turnovers while SDSU had 24.
However, the big statistic in this game came at the foul line. SDSU was 25-of-34 at the line while UNC was just 8-for-14.
UNC was led by center Kirk Archibeque, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Birden added 13.
SDSU is now 1-1 for the season, and will play at Illinois on Friday in the season’s opener for the Illini, who were runners-up in the NCAA last year. UNC is 0-2.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Matt Kline missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer as the University of Northern Colorado men's basketball team fell to former North Central Conference and current Division I Independent rival South Dakota State 61-59 on Monday in the Guardians Classic at Rupp Arena.
Northern Colorado (0-2) and South Dakota State (1-1) battled back and forth the entire game. The Jacks grabbed a 12-point lead early in the second half before the Bears fought back for a national television audience (the game was broadcast on ESPNU). An 11-2 UNC run midway through the second half allowed the Bears to tie the game at 46 on a putback in the lane by senior Erik Olson.
A jumper by junior Dwayne Birden at the 10:04 mark gave Northern Colorado its first advantage since the 4:20 mark of the first half. The Bears went up 52-50 on a pair of free throws by Michael Gordy before the game was last tied at 52 with 4:25 left.
SDSU then regained the lead and went up four points, 60-56, with only 10 seconds left. But a Sean Taibi trifecta cut that advantage to only one with five seconds remaining. After the Jacks' Matt Cadwell made 1-of-2 free throws, the Bears went the length of the court in three seconds and Kline got a 25-foot attempt off at the buzzer, an attempt that bounced off the rim.
"We made some great strides over the two days," head coach Craig Rasmuson said. "It was a great effort tonight and if we play with that passion and resolve the rest of the season, we will chalk up some victories."
The first half was nothing like the team's slow beginning on Sunday against Lipscomb. The Bears scored the game's first six points and led 8-2 five and a half minutes in following a Kirk Archibeque hoop. But the Jacks made an 11-1 run to pull ahead 13-8 before UNC responded.
That response was an 8-0 run that saw the Bears grab a 20-16 lead on a pair of free throws by Sean Taibi. Later an Archibeque bucket gave Northern Colorado a 24-21 advantage, but over the final five minutes, SDSU used a 14-2 lead to go to halftime with a 36-26 advantage.
Archibeque had his second consecutive good game, scoring a team-high 17 points and grabbing 14 rebounds, one off his career-high. After a cold shooting night on Sunday, Birden responded with 13 points in 23 minutes of action.
SDSU was led by 19 points from Steve Holdren.
The Jacks won the game at the free throw line. Northern Colorado was whistled for 31 fouls and South Dakota State converted 25-of-34 at the charity stripe. Northern Colorado managed just 8-of-14 free throws.
The meeting was the 56th meeting between the former Division II rivals, but the first since the 2002-03 season.
Northern Colorado opens the home season on Friday night when they host in-state rival Colorado State at 7 p.m. at Butler-Hancock Sports Pavilion. The contest marks the first time CSU has played in Greeley since 1956.
