        Re: UNC game tonight

Nice win, my heart is racing! I invest way too much in some of these games.

Decent game all around. Beran struggled but the play of Holdren and Cadwell made up for it. Nice interior D by Berte and Loney.

Looking forward to seeing this team on TV Friday and in person on Thanksgiving.

Would somebody summarize the post game comments and give a summary of the second half? I could only watch the first half and now i have to take off again before the comments.

          Thanks.

This game really shouldn't have been close. We absolutely fell apart mid-way through the second half, and had to scrap to win it.

Coach Nagy will have plenty to be unhappy about. Turnovers are still a big problem, as is offense in general.

            Still, we got the win!

With this young team this kind of performance is not unexpected.  The difference this year is that we might hold onto some of these wins instead of giving them away as a loss.

Confidence in the offense will come.  The focus needs to remain at the defensive end and on ball handling.  Much better job of getting to the line tonight.  Baskets will fall, we can't control that, preventing the other team from getting easy shots and taking good shots on our end we can control.

I'm realistic and still think 10 wins over DI teams would be a great year but look forward to being proved wrong.

                Nagy:

Very frustrating offensively, Ben couldn't make a layup tonight.

Defensively we were pretty good, that's what won the game.

Didn't like the starts we were getting so decided to change starting lineup. Trying to light a fire under some guys, light a fire under the team.

Great minutes from Andy, McKenzie, Mike Loney, pleased with all three.

Holdren was upset with the way he played last night, he needs to pick it up a bit defensively, also needs to score.

Free throws are an improvement, obviously, UNC had their hands all over you, officials don't let you get away with that any more.

Cadwell did a great job on Sparks last night and Taibi tonight defensively.

Two games in a row outrebounded--no way UNC should have outrebounded us. Gave up way too many offensive rebounds. When you shoot 33% and win the game, you're playing good defense.

Should have pulled away in the second half but that's what happens when you have a lot of young guys. 22 turnovers is ridiculous.

Playing Kentucky will take the edge off when we go to Illinois. Their fans will be excited but the Kentucky game will really help us when we go to Illinois.

                  Re: UNC game tonight

Nagy was a bit more upbeat than usual. I think he's seeing the progress and the potential. Very nice to get the first win this early in the season (against a DI opponent, even though it was another transitional team.)

                    Re: UNC game tonight

Nagy said he was happy with the defense (holding UNC to 38 percent after holding Kentucky to 36 percent); said the free throw differential shows that the team is listening to what the coaches are teaching; said UNC plays tough defense but puts their hands on players, which you just aren't allowed to do, thus the many fouls called on them; Nagy very unhappy with rebounding (UNC outrebounded SDSU); happy with Cadwell's defense especially; 70-whatever percent free throws are good for now, but he wants it higher. Turnovers: singled out Beran for his 8 turnovers out of the Jacks' 24. Beran might have been tired. Thinks that playing Kentucky in Rupp will help the team Friday in Assembly Hall at Illinois.

OK, we beat 'em on the court, now let's go beat 'em on the gridiron, whatdaya say? Send them into the Big Sky in the appropriate style . . .

                        Re: UNC game tonight

Well... it was very, very ugly, but it's a win. You have to be happy for the guys, although the turnovers are frustrating. As Nagy said, it seems like the defense is coming along, but the offense is still a work in progress. I suppose that's not surprising for such a young team.

All I can say is: UNC has improved a lot, and it's great to get a win early in the season. This team is going to be pretty good once they settle on an offensive personality. I hope the defense continues and the rebounding improves.

SDSU's sports info staff are on the job:

Jacks Hold Off Northern Colorado 61-59

LEXINGTON, KY - Redshirt freshman Matt Cadwell didn’t have a field goal, but hit 11 free throws including four in the closing 28 seconds as South Dakota State held on to defeat Northern Colorado 61-59 in the third place game at the Guardians Classic regional at Lexington.

Cadwell’s two free throws with 11 seconds left gave SDSU a 60-56 cushion, something they needed when Sean Taibi hit a three-pointer for UNC. Cadwell was fouled again, and made 1-of-2 at the line with two seconds left. Matt Kline’s three-point attempt at the buzzer missed.

Like opening night against Kentucky, when the Jacks missed 16 of their first 17 shots from the field, SDSU got off to a slow start again, this time falling behind 8-2 before going on an 11-0 run. Matt Cadwell hit a pair of free throws for SDSU’s first points at 14:54 to play, then Steve Holdren flushed a trio of three-point shots to key a rally which put SDSU ahead 13-8.

UNC came back and reclaimed the lead at 18-16 on a layup by Michael Gordy. UNC had its last lead of the half at 24-23 before Andre Gilbert hit four free throws and a layup while Mackenzie Casey hit a drive and the Jacks opened a 31-24 lead. Ben Beran’s shot at the buzzer made it 35-26 at halftime.

A three-point basket by Andy Kleinjan and a basket by Gilbert gave the Jacks a 42-30 lead before UNC rallied with a five point run to close within 42-35. A basket by Holdren off a feed from Beran momentarily ended the UNC run, but the Bears kept coming. When Erik Olson scored on a tip-in the game was tied at 46.

Olson picked up his fourth foul, sending Holdren to the foul line and he hit one so when Dwayne Birden hit a jumper, UNC was up 48-47. A free throw by Cadwell tied it at 48 with 9:06 to play. The teams traded possessions for three minutes until Matt Kline hit a jumper to give UNC a 50-48 lead, but Beran tied with a basket for the Jacks.

Gordy put UNC back in the lead with two free throws but Holdren scored on a drive to tie it again. Then Beran got a layup on a breakaway after a UNC miss and SDSU was on top 54-52. The Jacks led the rest of the way.

Holdren, who did not start, led the Jacks with 19 points, hitting 6-of-10 field goal attempts. Cadwell added 11 and Ben Beran 10. Michael Loney, who started at the post, had three points but led the Jacks in rebounds with nine before fouling out. Beran and Mohamed Berte had seven rebounds each.

SDSU shot 33 per cent from the field (16x48) while UNC shot 36 per cent (24x66) and the Bears counted 21 offensive rebounds in their 42-39 advantage on the boards. UNC had 25 turnovers while SDSU had 24.

However, the big statistic in this game came at the foul line. SDSU was 25-of-34 at the line while UNC was just 8-for-14.

UNC was led by center Kirk Archibeque, with 17 points and 14 rebounds, while Birden added 13.

SDSU is now 1-1 for the season, and will play at Illinois on Friday in the season’s opener for the Illini, who were runners-up in the NCAA last year. UNC is 0-2.

Nagy's post-game comments were some of the more upbeat comments I've heard from him. I think that's a great sign. Irrespective of the score or some of the obvious things during the game, Nagy is seeing some subtle things he likes and he even was so bold as to say we played defense well.

We're going to have a fun team to watch this year.

Coach Nagy was just on TV during halftime of the Kentucky vs Lipscumb game and was very positive and happy.
