    Re: Illinois

We may just be making the trip back to Brookville for Thanksgiving. The wifey may have to work on Friday, but if she doesn't, we'll be there.

Holdren Scores 28 In Return To Illinois
CHAMPAIGN, IL - Steve Holdren’s homecoming was a good one, but South Dakota State couldn’t keep up with Illinois Friday night, losing to the Illini 90-65 at Assembly Hall.

Holdren scored a career high 28 points, 14 in each half, but the only other player in double figures for the Jacks was Ben Beran with 11.

Holdren, State's 6-5 sophomore forward who is one of two returning starters, graduated from Centennial High School in Champaign. He hit 9-of-19 from the field with five three-point baskets.

But SDSU’s inside people - Mohammed Berte, Ben Beran and Michael Loney - spent much of the night in foul trouble. Berte fouled out with 9:49 to play, and logged only 15 minutes. Beran went out with 6:14 to go, playing 23 minutes.

SDSU got off to a slow start, with turnovers on its first three possessions, but the Jacks followed that by making their first four field goal attempts - including three-pointers by Holdren and Beran, and the Jacks had leads of 7-4 and 10-7. Illinois had an 8-0 run for a 15-10 lead but a three-pointer by Beran tied it at 15.

Then the Illini slowly pulled away. But the Jacks kept the margin below double digits until late in the half. A basket by Andre Gilbert pulled the Jacks within 33-28, but Illinois then went on a 9-1 run for a 42-30 lead and was ahead 46-32 at halftime. Illinois converted 15 SDSU first-half turnovers into 18 points.

SDSU was still within 14 when Andre Gilbert scored making it 63-49, but Illinois pulled away from there.

Dee Brown led Illinois with 19 points while James Augustine had 18 points and 14 rebounds.

It was the 22nd straight home court victory for Illinois and its 39th consecutive non-conference victory at home.

SDSU, 1-2 for the season, will have its home opener Thanksgiving night, hosting Southeast Missouri.

            Re: Illinois

Just got back from Champaign. I don't like losing by 25 either.... BUT... Illinois was great, they are a much better team than Kentucky. Their guys were huge(physically) Dee Brown is lightning fast and Augustine was a frickin monster. Our guys just couldnt hold em down in the paint. Ben couldnt really ever get in his game with the foul situation and we got NO calls last night. Holdren-AWESOME!!! Our guards are Freshman in just their third college game on a huge stage. I think they did fine-all of them. I was proud of that team last night!! We are going to take apart a lot of the mid-majors this year!!! Bring on SEMO!!
            GO JACKS !!!

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - For eight minutes, South Dakota State looked like it would put a scare into NCAA runner-up Illinois.

Then the Illini put their patented orange crush on the Jackrabbits.

The 17th-ranked Illini showed why they were a few minutes short of a national title last year, riding the muscle of James Augustine and the speed of Dee Brown to a 90-65 victory over SDSU in front of a 16,618-fan sellout Friday at Assembly Hall.

With both of the Jacks' losses coming to Elite Eight teams from a year ago, Coach Scott Nagy deflected the blame from his players.

"I told the kids after the game, the way we feel right now, it's really the coaching staff's fault rather than their fault," said Nagy, who was a graduate assistant coach at Illinois from 1988-90. "Obviously, we scheduled a very, very difficult start to our season. We're playing two of the top programs in the country over the last four or five years, and we're just not prepared right now. We don't have the toughness and the moxie to compete."

Sophomore Steve Holdren scored a career-best 28 points on 9-of-19 shooting for the Jackrabbits (1-2) in front of his hometown crowd. But foul trouble in the paint plagued SDSU, as forwards Ben Beran and Mohamed Berte both fouled out midway through the second half after only playing a combined 38 minutes and forcing Nagy to reluctantly use a 2-3 zone for much of the game.

"It was a lot of fun (playing in Champaign), but still, we got beat by 25," said Holdren, who also had a team-high six rebounds. "It can't be that fun."

If it wasn't for early turnovers, the Jackrabbits could have built more than just a three-point lead nearly four minutes into the game. SDSU didn't miss a shot until the six-minute mark, but also had six turnovers in that stretch as it watched its 10-7 lead quickly evaporate with an 8-0 Illini run.

"Either they turned it over or made a bucket, it was one or the other," Illinois coach Bruce Weber said.

With the score 15-all after Beran's second 3-pointer, the Illini slowly upped their lead to 46-32 at halftime and kept building it behind Augustine's physical play inside. The 6-foot-10 senior manhandled SDSU's post trio of Beran, Berte and Michael Loney, getting 12 of his 18 points and seven of his 14 rebounds before intermission.

Consequently, Illinois continued to pound the ball inside. The Illini outrebounded the Jackrabbits 40-28 and outscored them 36-6 in the paint.

"We got in foul trouble the whole game, and that limited us," said Beran, who finished with 11 points and just two rebounds. "If me, Mike and Mohamed all get in foul trouble, that's big trouble for us."

SDSU handed the ball over to Illinois 15 times in the opening half. In their first three games, the Jackrabbits have committed 42 of their 68 turnovers in the first period.

Sitting in the hotel room (hunting trip) ESPN was on and I really wasn't paying attention. Then I heard "South Dakota St." and looked up to see a few quick highlights of the game. That was neat

I think the rest of the area will soon realize where State is at now and it's a long ways from where we were two years ago.

Yep, it will take a couple of years (and a few big upsets along the way) but eventually all South Dakota will be as RabbitsHoopCrazy as we Yellow-and-Blue-blooded fans are.
