    Re: Marquette

    Some of Coach Nagy's remarks,

See in players faces they didn't think they had a chance.
Players nervous and scared. Plans thwarted by not being able to take care of ball.

Players need to do what we ask them to do or go somewhere else - Nagy didn't sound angry, just sad.

Cadwell has no choice, he has to score. (He had 22 pts and was 3 for 3 on three pointers. Berte was next in scoring with 8 pts.)

Beran is in a deep funk, but he's not a quitter. He will bounce back

Playing a better team Tuesday night at home. Players have to get in better frame of mind or that game will be worse.

They have had to revamp the system that was in place since August since Holdren is out. Need to keep the score in 40's and 50's, but they can't take care of the ball well enough to do that.

Until the players get a better mindset, he really can't help them.

He didn't sound angry, just sad and disappointed that the players walked on the floor thinking they had no chance.

He indicated that he didn't know what the mindset of some of the players is.

      Re: Marquette

      Nagy's comments:

You know you want to believe that your guys believe you have a chance for the win, but you could see it in their eyes they didnt.

I did not have much help for them.

Our guys were nervous and scared.

There is a long season ahead and looking inot their faces they dont know where they are at.

The players need to go home and figure out if theyre willing to play or not or go somewhere else.

You can suger coat it but our guys are scared and thats the plain truth.

Cant remember a worse half of play.

How many layups did we miss and thats something you just cant do.

If the players dont get in a better mental state, might be worse at home playing a better team.

Unless the improve mentally not alot I can do to prepare them.

We had to scrap the offense with the loss of Steve, this is not a deep team, alot of pressure on the freshman to perform, need to keep the game in the 50's and cant turn the ball over.

Whoo boy. Not good for Nagy to be saying that our next opponent is even better. What was he thinking?

          Re: Marquette

Nagy has never been one to sugar-coat things, and he didn't today either. Thats one thing I've always respected about him. I don't know that I've ever heard him as dejected as the post game interview. He just seems at a loss right now with whats going on.

Obviously Cadwell is playing well, and Berte seemed to have another solid game down low with rebounding and defense. But two players playing and the other 8 not will lead to a long season. I know Frias has been erratic at times, but he seems to light a bit of a fire when he's in the game. He is one player that seems to play aggressive and does a good job rebounding and dishing it. Maybe we'll be seeing more of him next week.

Emming asked about the possibility of pulling redshirts from a freshman or two, but Nagy said that won't be happening, which is good. He said he wasn't willing to hurt the program for the future, and even by pulling redshirts he wasn't going to be doing much for this year's team anyways.

In the postgame Nagy talked about this team needing practice time more than anything right now, but with the schedule we have coming up, there just isn't any time to practice. We have 4 games this week with just day off in between each game so he needs to give the players some rest on the off days with our thin bench.

Finally, I've never heard Emming comment on the ref's so much before on a broadcast. It seemed like every couple minutes he stated how bad the refs were and a few times was actually chuckling to himself on the calls. He said that Marquette was really taking it too us by shooting better and playing a swarming defense, but the refs just made it that much worse as well.

I don't know what to say about the rest of the season, hopefully a big crowd at home against Wis-Milwaukee gives the team some confidence and they can come out with a good performance. I'll be up in Brookings to see them for the first time since the exhibition season, looking forward to experiencing the new atmosphere at a real game.

Ouch. Kind of glad I got busy and didn't have to listen. We are bad right now and any win this year will be a good one.

Listening to national news on the way home. Zip building not going down is one of the headlines. Way to go boys. SD is in the news.

We need some leadership from Beran. He's been all but invisible in most of the games this year.

                  Re: Marquette

I also listened to the game, and also caught a number of Steve Emmings comments on the bad calls and refs.

When we were in the NCC, I believe the NCC had a rule for all member's media and that they were not to comment on offical calls. Steve being the pro he is made this rule one that he followed religously. Now that we are no longer in the NCC, I suspect he may not feel it a mandatory rule to follow and in this case it seemed to be bad officiating. I think Steve knows BB rules pretty good and no doubt, knows what he is seeing.

That said, it appears to be a making of a long season, but lets hope its not. I dont have any answers and I am sure Coach Nagy is really struggling for answers. I was surprised that MacKinze Casey was not playing today in the second half. He has been a very brave person up to this point, and I would be very surprised if he was benched for fear of playing.

I think we are going to be beggers for full transition period in terms of setting up a schedule. I do think we got to many games sandwiched together and no time for practice.

I crossed Nancy Neiber's path today while out shopping and we had a nice chat. She told me that SDSU had a tough time getting Middle Tennessee to come here and to come in December was the best we could do. I suspect that men's program is no different in terms of a schedule which has too many games in December IMO. To get these good teams on the schedule, SDSU has to play the begger's role in taking what we can get.

Looking forward to Tuesday night and hope that we somehow can regroup.

This is why getting into a conference is soooooooooo important.

                      Re: Marquette

The refs had a minimal effect on the game. I was sitting with fellow SDSU fans and never was a question about the officiating voiced. Here's my version of what happened.

Gilbert - had to have double digit turnovers AT THE HALF. Once we got down, he decided to win the game all by himself and succeeded in committing a turnover almost 50% of the time he touched the ball in the first half. A critical point in the game is when Cadwell hits a three to make the score 30-14. We forced a turnover to get the ball for Cadwell's 3. We get a rebound off the miss with an opportunity to cut the lead to 30-16 or 30-17 and gain some momentum. Gilbert dribbles into 3 defenders, turns the ball over, leading to a Marquette fast break. Momentum killed, game lost. Gilbert too often makes these types of plays in the 3 games I've watched.

Beran - didn't even take the outside shot which made him so tough to defend in the Kentucky game. He had alot of open looks from just inside the 3 point line, but didn't take any until the second half (that I remember). Making a couple of shots by him, stretches the defense, opens up lanes, etc... His confidence was not there.

Cadwell - played well on offense, but was an open gate on D. But, their point guard is a great player. He was rated the #2 recruit in the nation last year, so it's hard to blame Cadwell. He looked like a first round draft pick against us. He was 80% of their offense in the first half. Drive and dish = easy bucket for Marquette = repeat. Pretty much how the entire game unfolded. One thing I like about Cadwell. He doesn't quit. He was battling all game.

Berte - needs to establish himself on the boards and in the post. He came in with the tag of being a rebounder and enforcer in the paint. Ain't happenin so far. He needs to get meaner. After a while, as an athlete, you have to say enough is enough and fight back. He needs to make that decision and start fighting back. We don't need him floating around 15 feet from the basket. He needs to mix it up and start scrapping. D1 basketball is a physical brand of basketball. Heck, the NCC was a physical brand of basketball.

Frias - has the quickness to be a stud, but doesn't seem to understand how to work in a structured environment. We don't need flashy. We need solid passes and good defense. He's not providing that. A great game from Frias would be 4-6 points, 6-8 assists and very little turnovers. He seems to want to have 20 points and 3 highlight reel quality assists which at this point usually end up in the other team's hands. There's a reason Casey is the first guard off the bench even though Frias was signed to fill that role.

Loney - played hard, just a step slow for the Marquette big guys. He's my favorite player. Works his @ss off, not afraid to bang and is a team player. He's not worried about stats or PT. He just wants to win. The same can be said for Casey. They both stretch their talent to the limit. Neither are going to be superstars, but don't try to tell them that.

Sorry if this seems negative, but we're 1-5 for a reason. The Kentucky game proved we have the athletic ability to compete. Coach Nagy's track record proves we have the coaching ability to compete. That would seem to point the finger at our players. Someone needs to step up and be the leader for this team. Sounds cliche, but the cliche is well used for a reason.
