Diener to be honored before Marquette-South Dakota State game

MILWAUKEE Former Marquette standout and current N-B-A guard Travis Diener (DEE'-ner) returns to Milwaukee tomorrow for a pre-game ceremony before Marquette takes on South Dakota State.

The first ten-thousand people at the game will receive a free Diener bobblehead. . . .

The Golden Eagles will be happy to return home, having played their last four games on the road. Four-and-two Marquette beat South Dakota State 76-to-60 last December in the first meeting between the two schools.

    Marquette suffers early growing pains

    By Brian Koonz
    THE NEWS-TIMES

The euphoria lasted exactly four days for Marquette men’s basketball coach Tom Crean.
After leading the Golden Eagles to the Great Alaska Shootout championship last Saturday, Marquette (4-2) stumbled at undefeated Nebraska (5-0) on Wednesday night, 84-74.
For Crean, who led Marquette to the 2003 Final Four with current Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade, the outcome in Lincoln wasn’t entirely unexpected.
With nine freshmen and sophomores, Crean knows all too well the Golden Eagles will experience their share of growing pains this season.
“The one thing we’re searching for all the time is to play at a consistent level,” said Crean, whose team will face South Dakota State at home Saturday. “We showed considerable improvement in the second half (Wednesday), but our young players definitely have to learn these are 40-minute games.
“It’s all part of the process of a team developing and what it takes to win at the highest level.” . . .

"When you can call yourself a champion in a tournament like that, it just does wonders for your confidence.”
The Golden Eagles will need their confidence once Big East play begins.
Marquette opens its league schedule Jan. 3 at home against No. 3 UConn, followed by Cincinnati four days later at the Bradley Center. . . .

      Re: Marquette

At halftime of the women's MTSU game's webcast, Nagy made the comment that some of our young guys didn't know what their roles were on offense, so the coaches were going to tell them 'do this and nothing else.'

Sounds to me like the kind of structure the young guys need right now. They may not execute but at least they won't be floundering and wondering what they should be doing.

1 pm tip today, correct? Hope I can catch the 2nd half. If we play with the effort and desire we did in the 2nd half of the Fullerton game we can keep this close. Need to hit some 3's and rebound. An off afternoon by Marquette wouldn't hurt.

Down 9-2 at first timeout...on the bright side 2-2 at the line.

Marquette's color guy had a good observation--nobody on SDSU seems to want to take a shot.
