  • Mick...Youve Done it Again!

Did anyone else take notice of Mick Garry's little slam at SDSU in the USD article today:

"Morninside (7-2), a senior-dominated GPAC team that defeated SDSU at Frost Arena last season, hit 11-of-21 3-pointers as USD continually struggled to find the shooter."

He fails to mention this years score...SDSU 80, Morningside 67.

Is this an oversite or is he really just this bias?

      Re: Mitch...Youve Done it Again!

There does seem to be some bias in Sioux Falls, especially in the media. On the street, State fans I have run into seem more enthusiastic than anywhere else. Maybe its just because I am always bringing it up.

One question I had is why we never seem to hear about States games advertised? We are playing a Sweet 16 team from a year ago, and I haven't heard anything about it. On the radio (KSOO) as I was getting ready for work, they talked about college basketball. NO MENTION OF SDSU AT ALL!! It was all top 25, Augie, and USD. (Glad to see their score from last night ;D) Maybe I missed it, but I usually try to see what local media is saying about State.

If I wasn't paying close attention, I would not even know about it. I have talked a couple of people into coming to Brookings tonight, but can we really depend on word-of-mouth advertising to get decent crowds to drive 60+ miles?

PS-I am also going to try to post more, as I immensly enjoy the board, and want people to know where I stand.

        Re: Mitch...Youve Done it Again!

I almost posted something about Mick's article. I don't blame Mick. Honestly. I think it's an example of why beat reporting is almost always a bad idea. Basically, editors send reporters out of the newsroom and tell them to become "embedded" in another organization. At the same time, they're to remain independent. Embedded and independent is a pretty ridiculous concept. Success in that endeavor requires a reporter to gain access to key people. The right way to do it is to create a relationship based on mutual understanding that the other has a job to do. I'm a reporter, so it's my job to ask you these tough questions. You're a public official, paid by the taxpayers, so it's your job to answer. Of course the reality is that the public official part is ignored and the "public" official typically cuts the reporter's access off if tough questions are asked or if certain positions aren't spun properly in favor of the official.

It's a stupid situation. And it results in silly sentences like the one in Mick's story today.

I've been the one saying there isn't a bias, but I have noticed of late that SDSU isn't getting much play on KELO-TV at all. Sometimes there is no mention of SDSU games, particularly women's games, during the sports cast. Whether that's sexism (women's sports aren't as important to male sportscasters?) or bias or just a lack of understanding of the importance of SDSU to Sioux Falls and South Dakota, I don't know.

              Re: Mitch...Youve Done it Again!

Living in Kansas City, I don't have the access to the local TV channels that you folks lucky enough to live in the Great State of South Dakota do. However, when I am home I tend to watch KSFY and/or KDLT as they do a much better job of covering the Jacks for whatever reason.

I did notice during the SEMO game that both KSFY and KDLT have "sponsorship panels" at Frost while KELO did not.

              Go State! ;D

It's funny, because one of my uncles (Augie grad) was recently complaining about the bias the Argus has towards SDSU. However, I don't remember reading in any of the SDSU articles how teams faired against USD. I think we would all be complaining if we were Augie, though. They get overshadowed by USF.

KELO has been shunning the JACKS for some time now, not sure what has happened. They used to be pretty pro-SDSU 10-15 years ago.
My family has switched to watching KSFY news because of it.

The KELO newsroom is full of SDSU grads, but both sports guys are from out of state, I think.

It was helpful for SDSU when Tom Neiman was doing the sports. Tom was on the BB squad during the Thorson era, and he always came across very enthused when the clips from SDSU were played.

I guess if I were the media from SF, especially TV, I think I would be biased towards the teams that were winning as when you are winning you have maybe twice the viewers waiting to see that clip as opposed to a team that has a losing streak. I dont recall, did KELO have a clip of the SDSU-Marquette game? It seems like they did and lets see how tonights game is covered on the sports at 10.

I think too KELO has got some working relationship with USD as that is why the USD-UNO game was televised for little or nothing. Someone else explained how that work and I can't recall the details. If that is the case then, I can understand why they would shy away from SDSU. I dont think fairness doctrine applies to USD-SDSU coverage and maybe its a little outrageous to expect equal time.

                        Re: Mick...Youve Done it Again!

I think the KELO, KSFY, and KDLT sports segments are pretty much junk. However, KSFY is really picking it up, especially with the basetball preview, etc.

One of my biggest pet peeves is when KELO sports shows the scores, they never show the home team on the bottom like every other national sports programming show does!

Living here in SF, I did see on commercial for the game tonight vs UW-M, but what really scares me is that I haven't seen anything for the Manhattan game, and we are already two weeks away! Unfortunately, given the lack of advertising (so far) and the mens team's sub-par performance, I don't expect much of a turnout on the 20th.

Its a Mick slam against SDSU. Mike_H and Mick are both experts at that aspect of their occupation. (oops, guess thats a slam by me).

I don't fault Mick, that loss was embarassing and any shot delivered should be taken.

I've heard tons of radio ads for the Wisconsin-Milwaukee game and ads all over tv. I even have friends commenting that are getting sick of hearing the ads. I think advertising for the Manhattan game may be a bit premature...but I'm no expert. For all the hard time we as fans give for the lack of perceived advertising in our eyes.....I think we need to tip our hats to the athletic department on this one. Go Jacks!

Man, I'm a bit miffed. I had to scour the Argus sports section for info on tonights game. It was listed in the fine print area with other games for Men's basketball:

                              Denver at South Dakota State.

                              How's that for lame???

Oh and to top it off the number 3 game of the week is a gymnastic meet. :P
