Denison-Schleswig (Iowa) forward Thomas Bassett made a name for himself this summer while playing for the Rim Rocker's AAU program. While playing, he impressed coaches from South Dakota State enough that they offered him a scholarship and he recently accepted it. IowaPreps.com caught up with Bassett and talked to him about his decision, his visit this weekend to the campus, and much more.

How was your visit to South Dakota State this weekend?
"Good. I liked the campus and coaching."

When did you know South Dakota State was the place for you?

Why did you decide to end the recruiting process early?
"Because I really liked the school and the coaches."

Do you know what number you want to wear at South Dakota State?
    "No."

    How big are you now?
    "6-foot-5, 215 pounds."

What other schools were you considering?
    "None really right now."

    Have you chosen your major?
    "No."

What did you do this summer to prepare yourself for your junior season of basketball?
    "Lifted, ran, and shot around."

Were you pleased with your progress?
    "Yeah."

What areas are you working on improving this fall?
"Getting bigger and my jump shot."

What impresses you most about their coaching staff?
"How many wins they have and how they coach their players."

Who or what influenced you the most to verbal to South Dakota State?
    "Nobody really other than myself."

What is your favorite part about South Dakota State?
"How they treat their basketball players."

Do you have any advice for other prospects being recruited?
"Just meet the coaches and see how everything is run before you say you want to go there."

Sioux City East junior wing Roman Gentry has listed his favorites so far. He is 6'4 180 and averaging 25 points per game. Currently hearing from Iowa,UNI,Creighton,South Dakota State and a little from Marquette.
    Favorites: Iowa and Marquette.
Roman seems like the kind of quick, long, athletic guard we need to compete in DI. Hopefully if some of these schools fill their needs we will get a shot a Roman.

I noticed Pierre's 6'7 Junior Michael Tveedt put up 28 points against Brookings recently. He may be the best junior in the state. Has anyone seen him play and are the Jacks showing interest?

        Re: 2006 Recruits

Im from Pierre so I have seen Mike play alot. The question is whether he will plays basketball of football. It is a bit tough to make judgments about whether he is D1 material in basketball because the supporting cast isnt there so he gets pounded on. He needs to add a bit of weight and has improved in the strength department since last year. But he can go inside and shoot well from the outside. He is a VERY tough kid and has proved it on the football field. He was all state at wide receiver as a sophmore. Not afraid to go across the middle. He had to play Qb this year because the team had really no one else. At 6'7 he reminds me of Ed McCaffery. Very tall and tough. And very good hands. I think the Jacks could have an inside track on him because his mother is a top aide for Gov. Rounds. There should be a place someplace with the Jacks.

I think the Jacks could use a tough 6'7 reciever. Sounds like he will have some options at either sport. Would be nice to get him locked up before he gets too much interest if he's not already.

In younger years, Twedt reminded me of a young Mark Tetzlaff. We could use a Mark Tetzlaff every year.

Jacks recruiting Ben Lamaak 6'5 240 from Cedar Rapids Kennedy. SDSU, Drake and Cornell (New York) are recruiting Ben for Basksetball. Iowa, Iowa State and UNI are persuing for football and UNI and Creighton for Baseball. Leaning towards football but has not made up his mind. Had some injuries this year and that will play a role in terms of which sport he chooses for college. Graduates in 06. Four sport star.

                  Re: 2006 Recruits

When this season started most everyone thought the MBB team would end up with at least 10-12 wins if not more this year. We have found the Division I scheduling and all the road games to be a little tougher than we thought. I am under the impression that we should try to land one or two junior college transfers for next season who can provide immediate help to get us off to a good start next year. Does anyone know if we have contacted any Juco players or if we are even having any thoughts along those lines?

                  Go Jacks!!!

I noticed Maria had 27 points against Sioux Falls Lincoln the other night. Nice to get a committment from someone in the Junior class as her stock could continue to rise her senior year.

Jacks Sign Two For Men's Basketball

Brookings, SD – South Dakota State has signed two high school players from Minnesota to letters of intent indicating they will enroll at SDSU and participate in the Jackrabbit men's basketball program.

Signing with the Jacks on Wednesday, the first day of the early signing period, were:

Mark Engen, 6-10, 200, from Lamberton, MN,
Robert Bilitz, 6-10, 200, from Plymouth, MN
                          .

Engen averaged 21 points and 10 rebounds per game last year for coach Brian Walker at Red Rock Central High School. He shot 51.8 per cent from the field and 75.5 per cent at the foul line, and had 5.8 blocked shots per game. He earned all-conference honors in 2003 and 2004 and was an honorable mention all-state selection.

Engen enters his senior season with 894 points, 475 rebounds and 274 blocked shots.
He is the son of Keith and Sandy Engen of Lamberton.

Bilitz averaged 15.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per game while shooting 55 per cent from the field. He was a second team all-conference selection for coach Steve Jensen and West Lutheran High School in Plymouth.

He is the son of Mark and Sarah Bilitz of Plymouth.  .  .  .

I have total faith in Coach Nagy.  Things will get better.

                          Go State!  ;D

It has also been widely reported, by a number of sources, that Blake Yackley 6'5" Senior out of Sully Buttes will be coming to SDSU next fall.

We are going to need more than the two 6'10 guys from Minnesota and a guy from Sully Buttes. I think we need some immediate help from the Juco ranks.
