I think now that the program has turned the corner the current high school students will again look forward to the chance to be able to go to games on a regular basis once they get on campus. Grab the freshmen each year and it will build back. Changing the established habits of the current students is hard to do.
I know we keep banging on the students about showing up for games, so I am going to pile on a little. It is very disappointing. If it were not for the women's BB team, the VB team, SB team setting in the student section last night it would have been nearly empty! However we also have 18,000 plus non-students living in Brookings that could raise there interest a little as well.

Winning and I'll say it until I am blue in the face is what it takes to get people, students included to show up for any sporting event. You show me a team that consistantly loses and I'll show you a poorly attended event.

When the Jackrabbit women the great run the last few years they were in the top 10 of the nation in attendance.

Winning is returning to Frost Arena. Get your seat now so you won't miss it.

    Go Jacks

Jacks were never in the top ten for D-1 WBB attendance

Maybe its always been that way, but if it was basketball intramurals, that's probably about 200 people that should be our student target audience...
They have intramurals every night, way too many people that are in it to not have it on Thursday nights

True, but were in the top 50, maybe even top 40 last year. Their attendence was above many FBS conference schools. SDSU's attendence for women's games were an order of magnitude better than all but Oakland and ORU in the Summit. Jacks basketball at Frost Arena is one of the BEST venues in all of D-I. I believe TV rated the Summit league venues last year. IIRC, Oakland had the only arena close in quality to Frost.

SDSU is returning to being a basketball school after some really tough transition years. Much like we were in the NCC, SDSU is getting a reputation as TOUGH road location within the Summit.

How big would it be if Jacks OOC started including BCS schools at home? In women's BB, that's starting to happen. Only after some success on the road, and demonstrated support at home will SDSU start seeing that in men's BB.

SDSU should still be in the general vicinity of top 50 for WBB this year. Attendance numbers aren't that far off last year's totals...

            ---

And it'll be a long time before MBB BCS schools will come to Frost. WBB BCS come either because they respect the program, or (more often) because they're not giving up much of a gate by playing a road game. Totally different for MBB BCS.

With time and effort, Nagy may be able to ratchet the program up to hosting the occasional BCS team (Minnesota playing in front of 5k at Moby Arena in Ft. Collins, Mizzou playing at the Mabee Center). But it will almost certainly not be an annual occurrence, let alone something that happens twice a year.

What people forget is there are twice as many student as there were when Jacks were at their D-1 heyday. That's what makes the student attendance so disappointing.

Until the students pack the house on a regular bases the Athletic Department won't go out and get big games.

Like I said earlier I understand low attendance during a midterm week or semester test week, or if they are playing DSU, but this is a conference game with relatively nothing going on.

That has absolutely nothing to do with it. Nothing whatsoever.

You think the athletic department worries about how many non-paying spectators it can expect before offering a guarantee to another program?

                  Stop and think!!

                    I agree completely.

I know you already know it, zoo, but just a reminder to everybody else. Students ARE paying customers. They pay an activity fee per credit hour, a good bit of which goes to athletics.

And (again, speaking generally, not to you in particular) as it relates to my remark, the school gets that money whether they're at the game or not.

Therefore, student attendance really is a non-factor. The school's already accounted for that money.

"Non-factor" ever heard of home court advantage based on noise from the students section and maybe something called concession revenue.

I was watching the ORU-Oakland game on channel surfing net and it looked like Oakland had a pretty good crowd and quite a few students. I have never been to Oakland but it seems the reports here on the board are that they have a very low attendence for most games. Maybe being in first in the Summit brought people especially when you consider the opponent. I have looked at their official web site and the attendence was 4034, the kind of crowd we would like and also a bigger drawn then the Pork Classic. Looks like we need to buy a sale barn full of hogs and sell one at each media time out.

Its been that way for a long long time. I still have a lamaneted student activity card with photo ID and punch holes for each game attended. There are few that are not punched so even though I would like to think I attended every game, that card says I am a liar. I think we need to back off on the young folks, they really have not changed much in 50 years. Some in fact are better people than what I ever dreamed of.

i was watching it on channelsurfing too and at some point the announcers said something about the "homecoming crowd". might be why they had a big crowd
