    Re: Nebraska

Last night we got "picked" a number of times for turnovers. Our players were not expecting the "quick hands" Nebraska has. Frias is loose with the ball. He also needs to improve on free throw shooting. I am not sure Casey can play at this level. Andy played a fair amount and has some open 3s but could not connect. Someone needs to step up as we cannot play Cadwell 40 minutes every game. Cadwell, Beran and Berte compete at this level and last night Heinen did also. Although Nebraska is much bigger underneath, we compete very well in the paint. Coach was correct in saying that we should have been up at halftime. Missed some lay ups
, and missed some wide open threes plus those silly tirnovers by not taking care of the ball. Some of those led to NU lay ups.
I thought we played as hard as we could. I am encouraged that we will win some games in the future.
And next year with Holden back and our two 6' 10" freshman we will compete most every night out. No Nebraska fans left the game early last night. Go jacks!!!

LINCOLN, Neb. - One of these nights, it'll all come together for the Jackrabbits, and the South Dakota State men's basketball move to Division I will have that signature victory against a major program.

For much of Thursday night against Nebraska at the Bob Devaney Center, the Jacks played like this might be the game, but the Huskers (6-1) wouldn't let it happen, keeping a pesky SDSU squad at arm's length in a 76-67 victory. . . . (read more)

        Re: Nebraska

I attended the game last night. First time this year I have seen the Jacks play.

The Jacks could have won this game. What killed them were stupid turnovers. At the end of the first half that had several real stupid turnovers. A couple by Frias, who seemed to turn it over every time he touched it.

The Jacks front line of Beran, Berte, and Loney played really well, especially considering Neb was much bigger than them. Turnovers by the guards and cold shooting are what killed the Jacks. They were able to get it close a number of times but then would have a stupid turnover that would be just a killer.

I was very impressed with Heien. Played very hard and definitely left everything on the floor. He could probably lose the mustache though.

Cadwell played the entire game. He seems like a better shooting guard than point guard. I think they need to give some of the ball handling duties to someone else so he can be freed up to get open for shots.

Was not impressed with Frias. Turned it over way to many times, especially for a guy who is older is been around for awhile.

I went to the game with 3 Huskers fans. They were impressed with SDSU and in their words thought they were a "nice scrappy little team".

There was a nice turn out at Brewsky's and a good time was had by all. It is always fun for me personally to meet new Jackrabbit fans (new to me that is).

            Re: Nebraska

Got back at about 3am from the game, so I'll try to make a coherent point or two. I had several UN people ask how our women were doing, so they made a splash down south.

After following my sherpa to my seat in the nose bleed section, I sat down for the game dreading what might happen. I was pleasantly surprised with our performance. From what I could see it was an overall good game last night. Much better basketball. ;D Our offensive ball movement was great. We played right with these guys almost the entire game, except for short bursts. I was impressed with Berte's play again, he really changed how Nebraska played down low using his athleticism. If we could have gotten a few shots to fall, it may have been a different score. Turnovers still hurt us, not as many, but still at key points in the game. Like I said before leaving last night, we definitely have the ability and the talent to compete. Tonight I think we put the two together more than we have yet this year. I was proud to be a Rabbit.

Our shooting was not too good, but I was excited to see us taking open shots. Those good shots will eventually fall. If Andre or Andy would have hit even a couple, we might have kept them on their heels enough to win. I was more impressed with Andre’s play last night than previously. He seemed to let the game come to him instead of forcing the issue--credit to the coaching staff, as well as Andre for being more patient.

I think Heien proved what he can do. Mac can compete on this level, as he has in the past, but he needs to get his confidence back. It's not the size of the dog in the fight, but the fight in the dog. For our other guards, the shots will fall and turnovers will continue to go down. We are going to need every one of the guards (including Jose and Mac) to play as most teams we are playing against are running 8-10 fresh bodies at us every night. We need everyone's fresh legs to keep up on defense.

Another dilemma I see developing is our post game. The guys are working their butts off down their ;D, but they seem to get tired. With only three guys to fill two spots at the post, once they get winded it is easier to get out of position and pick up fouls. Then they have to play more cautiously. This situation will improve next year.

Again, I was much happier with the performance, but also disappointed we didn’t pull off the upset. Keep improving, and I think we will be happy with the finished product.

Lastly, I was extremely disappointed with SDSU’s fan turnout. It is a shame more people could not have witnessed first hand the progress being made. It was a Thursday game, but I think I only saw about 10-15 fans at the game. I was expecting a couple hundred. Maybe I just didn’t see them, but I hope we have a better showing against Minnesota on the road.

              Re: Nebraska

I'm disappointed we didn't pull off the upset too. We definitely had the opportunity to win this game. Turnovers was the killer. The offense looked good. If they could have got just a few more 3s to go down it would have been huge. Many of the 3s were open shots too. The offense definitely produced open shots.

As long as they don't give up hope and play hard every game, this team is going to win some ball games.

                Re: Nebraska

It was great to see the Jacks bounce back against a good team. Berte's numbers are huge. He was recruited to be that sort of player and our team can't win unless he is. Great to see. Even in losses like this one (which it sounds like we had a chance to win) our confidence both as a team and individually (Heien and Berte in particular for this game) will increase. As down on the team as I was after the Marquette and UWM game, the main thing you noticed from them was a lack of confidence when things got down. It's the hardest thing to overcome as an athlete/team/coach. We fought it when I was playing football for the Jacks. Some solid performances and some wins make it easier to stay out of the "here we go again" feelings when a team goes on a run. I think our football team finally has the belief to always feel like they're going to win no matter what happens. Our basketball team will eventually get there and this game is a step in the right direction. GO JACKS!

I am well pleased with the effort. We are going in the right direction. Prior posts seem to have analyzed the effort. Its not a win, but dad gumit, its progress. We cant expect anything less. Wins will happen sooner or later. Patience please.
