    Re: Jacks vs Denver

I was leaving Sioux Falls at 6pm when I ran into rain which turned into snow and turned back. I'll know better next time.

i dont have anything positive to say?  lets check out your posts lately. i the most positive person there is when it comes to jackrabbit sports. i was just telling you what my son said, he was at the game and all his friends thought the same and nagy made the comment afterwards about whether it should of counted.

jackmd, you seem have wonderful insight on the first half for someone who is listening to the game on the radio. :-/ :-/ :-/ Unless you have wireless internet and a laptop?

I was unable to make it to the game, so I can't give too much analysis on the game. I wonder if their stud being out had an effect on our defensive strategy? Maybe our guys had trouble adjusting to a different look from Denver in the first half? I will say that this team can play at this level when they play good ball.

Sounded like an awesome game by Gilbert, and Coach Nagy was gushing about the SD kids after the game. Maybe the local kids can keep up at this level, huh jackmd?

        Great win!!!

Ok I must apologize to Mitchell. Even Nagy seems to think it might have been late. My bad. Either way, nice win by the Jacks. Nagy is a great guy and I am glad he has high expectations. Still, I'm glad I'm not a 19 or 20 year old kid on his team, it would be tough. I've gone through that and it is rough. Nice win Jacks.

I suspect you and I could have some fun sitting down and talking about SDSU basketball. Not sure if you could go back to the the early 1980's and up through the current Jack's teams as I suspect you are a little younger than I. Either way, I am pretty sure I could temper your emotional immaturity with a little wisdom and patience. A win over UMKC is nothing more than a win over UMKC. My statement holds true regardless of your impressions of this victory. If that is more than your can accept I understand. Afterall, you're just a kid aren't you?

Just figured out how to quote, being a young whipper-snapper I learn something new everyday!!

Weren't we playing Denver tonight? Maybe I did not understand your post.

Either way, I am going to try to be optomistic and think we will win every game. I like that more than thinking we are going to lose and being surprised when win. Maybe I just love self inflicted emotional punishment. ;D

I just got home from the game and have to say that the atmosphere was unelievable. Even though the students didn't come back in their yellow shirts (????) they were very much into the game. Let's get out to back the team on Monday night.

PS - Andy's shot was after the buzzer.

The game was amazing. At the last game the 600 yellow shirts were passed out. Unfortunately, only about 60 returned to this game. However, several students were commenting about how they forgot their shirts. Hopefully next time everyone will remember. I had my yellow shirt on. Go Jacks

I was at the game and let me tell you they played their a$$e$ off in the second half. Heien was shooting very good from 3 land all night. Very nice shot. Gilbert played within the game and played very good. Double double for him and he played just great. Cadwell handled the ball and picked it up in the second half. Ben scored some points but didn't get a lot of rebounds until later in the second half. I agree with the opinion about the first half the team didn't play with a lot of energy. Certainly didn't play that way in the second half. Free throw shooting was bad again. We had problems with the big guys staying out of foul trouble. Had problems matching up with their power forwards driving to the lane for easy layups. We missed a few layups too. No comment on the last second shot. This was a very good win and it is going to help the youngsters with the idea they can win.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

Being a witness to the game, I would say your take is accrurate. The shortcomings were there at times, but then we also showed some character.

For Denver No 1 DeShawn Walker and No 10 Antionio Porch were excellent athletes and Coach Nagy did comment that both were "too athletic" for our guys to handle.  Porch was 6-8 and very lean body with a leap of about a 5 yards it seemed like.  Since both fouled out, UDenver's offense was very limited and that helped, but we need to have our big guys hang in their for longer periods of times.  Too many of the turnovers were silly and I am sure even the players would agree. Progress was made tonight and what happens next Monday will be interesting.

The NBA Prospect has the 6-11 body for the NBA sort of a Shack type, but he is a long ways from matching Shack's finesse. If Nickerson makes the NBA, he will be a project, but the pro coaching staff  know how to correct these things so he may be playing there some day soon.

UMKC played UNI tonight and on my way home I picked KXEL 1540 Waterloo, and they had post game show on with Coach McDermott.  UMKC played UNI close until 10 minutes into the second half. UNI won 87-64 I believe so we probably will not have an easy game monday, certainly a winable one.

I have watched only two D1 opponents, and both have had athletes with ability that we never saw in the NCC. The overall quickness of our opponents is unbeliveable and thats what's making it tough for our young kids.

Heine is going to be a big help this year. I am curious as to why he left Mount Marty. At any rate I beginning appreciate him with each game. He can shoot the lights out if you leave him open.

                        Hey House,

How come whenever you offer your negative opinion it's a "fact" or "reality" or "perspective"; but then you turn around and tell somebody to screw off and say they have nothing positve to say?  Sounds like the pot calling the kettle black.

Doesn't make much sense to me. ???

Cadwell Hits Buzzer Beat As Jacks Top Denver

Matt Cadwell hit two three-pointers in the closing five seconds - the second with the buzzer sounding - as South Dakota State rallied to defeat Denver 81-78 in overtime in men’s basketball Saturday night at Frost Arena.

The Jacks had only one lead early in the game, 3-2 on a three-pointer by Ben Beran, and trailed by as much as 16 points, 44-30, early in the second half.

Then SDSU began picking away, but Denver still had a five point lead with 28 seconds left. Cadwell hit a three with 16 seconds left, cutting it to 69-67. Yemi Nicholson missed the front end of a 1&1 free throw, but the Jacks missed a three and had to foul, sending Alex Cox to the foul line. He hit his first attempt, then missed the second and the Jacks rebounded. Racing down the floor to beat the clock, Andy Klienjan threw in a long three-pointer at the buzzer to force overtime.

In the extra session, two free throws by David Kummer with 20 seconds left gave the Pioneers a 78-75 lead. Cadwell hit a three-pointer with five seconds left to tie the game, then Cox was called for a foul on the inbounds play, turning the ball over to the Jacks. Cadwell’s jumper from the top of the key went in as the buzzer was sounding.

The victory ended a six game losing streak for the Jacks, who are now 2-7 heading into a Monday night game with Missouri-Kansas City at Frost Arena. Denver, which participated in the NIT last year and is favored to win the Sun Belt title again this year, dropped to 5-2. UMKC lost at Northern Iowa 87-64 Saturday night and will bring a 3-3 record to Brookings.

Cadwell, the redshirt freshman from St. Paul, had five threes in the game and led the Jacks with 23 points while Andre Gilbert put together a double-double with season highs of 16 points and 13 rebounds. Eric Heien hit four three-pointers and finished with 14 points while Beran ended with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Denver was led by Antonio Porch with 25 points while DaShawn Walker added 23, but Nicholson, the Pioneers standout center, got in early foul trouble, sat the last 18 minutes of the first half with two fouls, and finished the night with eight points and four rebounds. He came in averaging 18.8 points and 11.8 rebounds.

Denver shot 47.5 per cent from the field, 29-of-61, while SDSU shot 41.2 per cent, 28-of-68, but the Jacks had a 12-4 advantage in three-point baskets. Denver had a 42-41 rebounding advantage, with Walker getting 11, and each team had 19 turnovers, but Denver committed 12 turnovers after halftime.

The Jacks finished the game with Gilbert and four guards on the floor with Beran, Mohamed Berte and Michael Loney all sidelined with five fouls.

                            Re: Jacks vs Denver

I don't care whay anyone says, that was a great game at Frost Arena.  I honestly don't know if i have seen a better ending (not counting the Metro loss which i have erased from my memory)  A couple comments:

                            1.  Team played good throughout, but turned it on at times in the second half.  They still committed a lot of mistakes and i honestly didn't think they could come back when we were down 15 with about ten minutes to go.

                            2.  Eric Heien (sp?, its late) can flat out shoot the lights out.  Had anyone heard of this kid in high school.  Denver was in his pocket all during the second half or he may have won us the game on his own.  I don't know how the ref called the foul with 3 ticks left in OT, but the Denver player did clear Heien out with this arm.  Just didn't think we would get that call in that situation.  Loved Nagy's comment in the postgame about how he can't believe he is drawing up plays for Eric Heien, but he's going to keep doing it.

                            3.  Andy's shot was about a half a second late...too bad  ;D, but the calls were very inconsistent all night. Cadwell was fouled about 3 times and we didn't get any call.  Larson was visibally upset on the bench and during TO's letting the refs have it.

                            4.  We would have never been in overtime if #3 from Denver wouldn't have blown the dunk at the end of the regulation...he lays that in, game over.  Even further, Cadwell had a chance to win the game in regulation with a wide open three (by far his most open shot of the night) which just missed.

                            5.  Cadwell is the real deal.  Both shots in OT were clutch.  It looked as if he was fouled on the first one, could have been a four point play.  Game winner was awesome.  Was nice to see the team celebrate (matt jumped up on scorer's table) at the end, kind of releasing some frustrations.

                            6.  Gilbert played very well, even hit some outside shots.   Nagy said repeatedly in the post game that this is what they expected from Andre and knew he was capable of, and he is glad it finally came.  Hopefully it stays around a while.

                            7.  What a great game...end of the game we had two frosh, two walk ons, and Andy K on the floor.  Wish there was more than 1800 there to see it but what can you do.  Those that were there will never forget it.

I don't care what anyone else says on this board, Klienjan, spelling is wrong, is not a good bball player. His agressiveness is a problem. You can talk all his SD high school accolades all you want. The fact remains that he is too timid to be out on the floor. He is a prime example of someone who was recruited to play d2. He could be great if it were not for his lack of aggressiveness. Heinen, who I'm sure is not a scholarship player, plays his ass off and seems at times to be the only player that has any basketball sense whatsoever. His assists, is what keeps us in the game. His passes to down low in the first half are indications to that. Berte, seems to through up junk most of the time, actually had a few that went down. Berte and Gilbert are our most athletic players on the team and will be dominant players as they mature. Chalk one up to the gods as the Jacks got a break on the buzzer to send it into overtime. It was clearly after the buzzer. All around, great job by the jacks.
