  • Sargent, Engen & other tidbits

Coach Nagy mentioned during a booster lunch on Tuesday in Sioux Falls that Clint Sargent had injured his shoulder in practice. His status was unclear. Anyone heard more? (Losing him for any length of time would be bad news!)
The coach also said that Mark Engen was the only player that played up to his capability in the NDSU game and that Engen has earned more playing time.
No matter what it might look like, all the players on the team care deeply about winning, Nagy said. Kai Williams and Garrett Callahan, who like Engen are seniors, have been huge contributors to the men's program their whole careers against the toughest competition SDSU has ever played.
Here's another tidbit of interest from Nagy. 6-4 Brayden Carlson, who is redshirting, has beefed up. The coach estimates his weight has increased from from 175 to 205. That may be partly because he lifts weights more often than the players on the active players and partly because he eats more. Regardless, Nagy thinks Carlson has a bright future.
Also, Chad White is recovering from his busted up finger and might begin practice shooting soon.
The coaching staff is spending most of its recruiting time checking out high school sophomores and juniors because SDSU's junior class includes four scholarship players.
    This space for lease.

About Sargent: If he is out any amount of time, that would be a huge blow.

Would Rader see more time if Sargent was out?

I would guess that it would just mean more playing time for Garrett. Right now Garrett and Clint kind of play the same role as the go-to scorers/shooters. With Clint out, I would expect Garrett's, Dale's, & Griff's minutes to bump up.

I just don't think his defense is very good (Rader's). He needs to work on his foot speed. I think like the previous post stated, more time for Moss and the Callahan bros.
Over? Did you say "over"? Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!--Bluto--

I'm glad to see that Mark Engen has been getting some playing time and making the most of it. It's not always pretty, but he can be an effective role player. From what I've seen and heard, Mark is a well respected guy.

Here's his averages for the past 3 games:

          Minutes: 11 | Points: 4.7 | Rebounds: 5.7 | Steals: 1.0 | Blocks: 1.0

His FG% isn't the best but he's been getting to the line and making his free throws. He's also been one of the few players that is out bustin' tail when other players are taking a half off.

I have gotten to know him. Mark is a great kid and I'm happy for him to be getting on the court. He was a spark last night for sure. We can use that particularly in the middle.
