Hard for the players to get up for games?

    1st 5 home games:

    1,312
    1,304
    1,361
    1,009
    1,261

There were bigger crowds at the games in Fargo for high school games this weekend.

Start producing and the crowds will show up.

The football team is a perfect example of that. Fans want to be part of a winner. They want to go to the office the next and tell coworkers how awesome the game was the night before, not they spent $15 or whatever to see the Jackrabbits piddle another one away.

For some reason that sounds really harsh, but I believe it to be true.

High schools all over South Dakota draw larger crowds than this....so what? If you are implying that our players can't get up for home games because of the small crowds...all I can say is that I sure as hell hope our guys are better than that.

I should copy this quote somewhere and save it:

        https://www.nmnathletics.com//pdf4/3...DB_OEM_ID=3900

The crowd and the energy that builds in this atmosphere helped us, but we also have to bring energy.
        Macie Michelson

In the second half, our players played well and the crowd feeds off of them. Then the players fed off the crowd. It’s definitely a partnership with the fans, but it’s usually a partnership that starts with the players.
        AJ

The WBB team understands their partnership with the fans. It's something the MBB team needs to sort out.

It is a partnership. I am not going to pay money to watch the men phone it in and lose. If someone wants to tell me that makes me a bad fan, so be it. I live in Sioux Falls, driving to -every- Jackrabbit home game is impossible, and until the men start bringing it consistently, it's so much easier to justify going to a WBB game.

The women are holding up their end of the bargain better than the men, therefore if it comes down to one or the other, I'm going to a WBB game.

I would love for it to be a toss up, and who knows? By the end of this year it could be.

But for right now, it's no contest. Go see an electric game like the WBB season opener, or watch SDSU look frustrated and lifeless against Cal Poly. Tough decision, folks. Tough decision.

          Re: Crowd Size

I am to lazy to do research, but traditionally December is not a good month for attendance and with the Students leaving today and returning in Mid January, I would not expect a good crowd for any game until they return.
The only exception I can think of is some of the women's games where they had big name attraction such as the USC game a year or two back. Also the NSU and SDSU games seem to fill Frost as their was interest in Aberdeen and Brookings both communities was running high. These are the exceptions.

I just think the men's team is struggling and crowds probably dont have a great deal to do with anything except that December is not a good month for attendance and it would take more than a good product on the floor to get people out.

I spent a little time excercising my free ice cream coupons from the SDSU Foundation and I found the Dairy Bac building was buzzing with students taking exams. My how the students have changed in 50 years. The Dairy Bac building was the premier new building when I attended. I don't recall entering the restroom and smelling smoke that obviously came from a joint. Some was either celebrating or anticipating failure from taking an exam. I suppose I could have called the UP, but thought I need to pick up my ice cream and head for home. (Thats called minding your own business) The bottom line is that from what I saw yesterday, these young students are very independant in their thinking, and getting them to BB games they have already paid for is a struggle.

I think that if you are DI athlete you shouldn't need a large crowd to get you excited to play the game.

It is amazing how different the vibe is between a men's game and a women's game. It just seems that the Women's good play cause the buzz in Frost while the buzz in Frost inspires the Men's good play. Perhaps a double header is in order.

Too bad that the jacks could flip their schedule a little more so that they would be on the road during the break. Those home games during Thanksgiving break and Christmas break are pretty brutal in Frost.

Any team with any pride or toughness will never rely on the crowd to motivate them. Remember the movie "a few good men" where Nicholson goes off on Cruise and says, "... i don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to!"

Sadly the jacks men's team thinks they are entitled to a great game atmosphere. What they haven't figured out yet is that they owe their fans a product to get enthused about. Not even talking about wins and losses, talking about passion and unselfishness.

Funny how their beat writer will mock other teams for having their bench cheering, but if the jacks did it, the fans would faint. Because it would demsonstrate some level of unselfishness or team first mentality. As talented as the jacks teams of a few years ago were, they still outworked and out-toughed their opponents, that's why they were great.

Could care less if the jacks win another stinking game this year if they actually started to care about each other and started playing for each other instead of themselves. If they actually played with passion and effort and uselfishness, the winning would take care of itself. Only problem is that if they don't really believe it, it won't work. You can't fake "team".

The coach talks too much about winning and losing and not enough about what it takes to do those things. If the end result is all that matters, the process gets neglected. The process is the only thing that gives you a chance to consistently get the results you want. Seems to have worked well for the women. once again, my two cents.

What on earth are you talking about? What have any of the players said or done to make it seem anything like they feel they are entitled to a great game day atmosphere? The only people we've heard that from are on this board. I don't think we've ever heard the team say they expect anything from the fans.

I'm gonna go ahead and break the mold from all this whining we've all had to endure since Tuesday. The Jacks have had two great practices since the Poly loss. They will come out tomorrow night and get a W and play well.

simply expressed my thoughts. i'm one person. if everyone disagrees with me, i can live with that. if my words angered you, i have to live with that as well. i wish the guys played consistently with half the fire you displayed in your post. you can rip me more if you want, but it won't change the opinion i have of the program right now. sorry if that offends you. they will have some quality wins and people will start to think everything's ok, but one good win here and there, gets you 10-12 on the year. observations rooted in fact and performance are not whining. whoever you are you seem to have a close connection to the program, get those guys playing well consistently and hopefully they can have a winning season. thanks for your support of the jacks.

I'm not angered with what you said and understand you have the right to an opinion. I'm just saying that I don't know where anyone would get the guys think they are entitled to anything as far a crowd attendance. I don't think I ripped you in that post at all, did I? If I did or came across that way, my apologies.

If we'd been hearing things from them about the crowd or something I'd understand. But, we don't get that at all.

I can understand being frustrated with the play, but simply making things up because your frustrated isn't necessary.

believe me, nothing is made up. perception is reality in this world. and to think the "i'm pretty cool" sense of entitlement doesn't exist with certain individuals in the program is to turn a blind eye.

                              Re: Crowd Size

I think it was Bluehatman that said it before he left the board that certain players on this team do have a "I'm too cool for you" type attitude and had turned off a lot of students by that attitude. I'm against having athletes room with athletes, seperate athletic dorms, etc. It can only lead to problems and the developement of that I'm better than you attitude. Look at Michigan State's football program right now. Around 10 players suspended or kicked off the team because certain members of the football team have a grudge against a black fraternity.

The Jacks women's bb team hang together, yes, but they also go out of their way to be friendly, especially to kids. They involve themselves with the community in projects and are approachable.

The mens team as far as I can tell just from watching them and how they carry themselves have a certain don't come near me look. I don't know how they are in person because I only get to see them live once a year. As far as getting out in the community I never read on gojacks that they are doing anything to get involved with the community except for Nagy and the shoe thing.

Any way, who wants to see and cheer for someone if they are going to be snobs to you the rest of the week.
