Gophers win but lose, tooHargrow misses game; Grier to sit out Friday's game

    BY MARCUS R. FULLER
    Pioneer Press

The University of Minnesota men's basketball team thought the worst was behind it as far as injuries to key players and off-the-court issues.

But even an 88-64 rout of Grambling on Wednesday night at Williams Arena couldn't hide Dan Monson's frustration. The Gophers coach has even more problems to deal with three games before the Big Ten Conference season begins.

Minnesota, which has played short-handed much of the season, was again short a starter, as senior guard Moe Hargrow sat out after violating an unspecified team policy.

Vincent Grier made up for Hargrow's absence by leading four Gophers players in double figures with 25 points, but Monson said Grier would miss Friday's game against South Dakota State for also violating team rules.
To make matters worse, leading rebounder J'son Stamper also could be sidelined Friday with a strained right knee, suffered in the first half.

"Our kids Friday are going to play without Vince and probably without (J'son)," Monson said. "It's hard to be the team you want with injuries and these kinds of things. I feel like when we come back from Christmas break it's going to be Oct. 15 again. We're behind where everybody else is and where we wanted to be at this stage."

Monson said Hargrow probably would play Friday, but the Gophers (7-2) still won't have a full complement of players. The Gophers have played at full strength in only two games this season, including last Wednesday's 69-68 victory over Alabama-Birmingham.

Injuries have hurt the Gophers the most. Grier missed five games after breaking his left ring finger in the season opener against North Dakota State. Hargrow missed three games after rolling his ankle Nov. 30 against Maryland. Monson also said he would redshirt freshman Kevin Payton after Payton couldn't recover quickly enough from a summer shoulder injury.

Before Wednesday, sophomore Rico Tucker was the source of the team's only serious off-the-court issue. He sat out the exhibition season and the first four games of the regular season for failing to meet academic requirements. Sophomore Dan Coleman missed the Gardner-Webb game because of a family emergency.

Things appeared to be improving after Tucker returned; he helped the team to a victory over Coastal Carolina on Dec. 3. Grier returned to spark a victory over Nevada-Las Vegas on Dec. 10. And Hargrow returned to score 20 points and sink a game-winning free throw against UAB.

But the Gophers are now back in survival mode, as Monson put it  .  .  .

Nice we don't have to deal with the Gophers best player (Grier) and their best rebounder (Stamper).

Here's to catching them while they are looking at their conference games and pulling off a huge win.

Wish I could make the trek, but just can't.

I plan on going to this game tomorrow. How is everyone else getting tickets?

I have heard, but not sure if it is true, that alot of the season ticket holders sell the non-conference games, so I may try to pick some of those up. What is everyone else doing?

                Re: Minnesota

A couple of points concerning our success tomorrow night.

1-Jackrabbits are graceful and beautiful creatures. They are quick. People can wear their fur to keep warm. If you have a liking for it, you can even eat their tasty flesh. A very handsome and useful animal, no doubt.

2-Gophers are a ground dwelling animal which digs in the dirt. They have small, squinty eyes and buck teeth. I don't believe anyone has ever worn their fur with pride. I feel sorry for any human being driven to eat them. They are disgusting, dirty, and a menace to any self-respecting prairie dweller. They are a very repulsive animal.

3-If our arena is the "Rabbit Den" does that make theirs the gopher hole?

Based on these three points, I am glad to be a Rabbit, and we will win Friday night. Add the fact that their school color is a perverted shade of our beloved yellow, and they stand no chance. ;D

I too need to find tickets to the game. Are general admission available? I'm hoping for a large contingent of rabbit fans.

When I bought tickets from the SDSU office, they only had 37 tickets left - I wonder how many the Jacks were allotted. Anyone going to the pregame at Stub and Herbs?

For Matt Cadwell and Andre Gilbert, playing on the court at Williams Arena is old hat. They experienced that in high school growing up in the Twin Cities area.

Playing their hometown University of Minnesota, however, is somewhat new territory. The two redshirt freshmen will make their Minneapolis homecoming today when South Dakota State plays the Gophers in a 7 p.m. tipoff.

"I'm really looking forward to it," said Cadwell, a St. Paul native who had a storied career at Cretin-Derham Hall High. "Obviously, we're going there to win a basketball game, but I'm excited to play in front of my family and friends who watched me growing up."

Both guards have shown their potential in their first year with the Jackrabbits (3-8).

After redshirting a year ago, Cadwell has anchored Coach Scott Nagy's lineup this season and become the primary scoring threat after forward Steve Holdren was lost for the year to a torn ACL. The 6-foot-3 guard leads the team with 16.2 points and 3.8 assists per game while averaging a veteran-like 37 minutes a game. Cadwell is shooting better than 45 percent from the field, including a nearly 47 percent mark from 3-point range.

"He's a tough kid" Nagy said. "Quite honestly, we've got to take some pressure off him. He's just not going to score 25 a night. We need other players to take the pressure off him."

Gilbert, meanwhile, has endured his share of ups and downs. An athletic 6-7 swingman, the Brooklyn Park native averages 7.6 points and 5.8 rebounds a game. But he has been plagued by turnover problems, committing nearly 3.5 a game and sliding from the starting lineup with Cadwell to the first player off the bench.

Both Cadwell and Gilbert grew up as Gopher fans. Gilbert used to play on the Williams Arena court with his sister, who went to Minnesota.

"It's going to be like a welcome-back party - a lot of family and friends," said Gilbert, a Park Center High graduate. "Instead of watching people play at Williams Arena, I'm actually on the court playing the university."

Minnesota coach Dan Monson knows all about the Twin Cities duo, having scouted them on the recruiting trail. He said having players like Cadwell and Gilbert, high-end athletes who are still developing as basketball players, will help SDSU grow into a solid Division I program.

"Scott has done a nice job finding guys," Monson said. "That's how we built Gonzaga, doing it in that same manner. They've got guys who want to work hard and improve. They've got two or three guys that are not even the same as they were in high school."

After winning two straight, the Jacks fell 73-70 in overtime to Manhattan on Tuesday at the Sioux Falls Arena.

The Gophers (7-2) will be missing two of their top players tonight. Monson said senior swingman Vincent Grier, the team's top scoring guard who had missed six games with a broken hand suffered in the first game of the year against North Dakota State, will sit out tonight's game due to violation of team rules. And leading rebounder J'Son Stamper will miss the game after injuring his right knee in Wednesday's 88-64 win over Grambling.

Minnesota guard Maurice Hargrow will play after sitting out Wednesday for a "minor" violation of team rules. Hargrow is the Gophers' second-leading scorer at 16.2 points per game, three less than Grier.

Minnesota had one big slip playing without Grier, an inexplicable 73-72 home loss to Gardner-Webb on Nov. 28, but they have won five straight heading into tonight's game.

"We've got a chance to play Minnesota and maybe catch them flat right before Christmas," Nagy said. "If our guys are thinking about going home for Christmas, we're going to get whipped. But if they're thinking, 'Let's go in and play basketball,' then we'll play. I know our guys won't be afraid after where we've been."
